Trump played this one pretty smart.
Before the hearing he said that the witness might change his mind
During the hearing he had something like: "I love this, great television" leaked to the press. He even delayed meeting Rosenstein.
After ignoring a dozen or so letters from Democrats he now ordered an FBI investigation. Which leaves three outcomes:
A. The FBI doesn't find anything new or conclusive
B. The FBI comes up with something that torpedoes Kavanaugh
C. The FBI finds some evidence that completely clears Kavanaugh
In scenario A or C, Trump gets to say 'Fake news', 'Democratic Witch Hunt', 'Phoney accusations just like they're doing against me" and Kavanaugh is confirmed.
Leaving Democrats battered and defeated after such a long fought battle. Not to mention under scrutiny for their behavior should C occur.
If B is the reality Trump gets to say that he believed the witness, called for the investigation and saved the day or did exactly what the senate and public wanted.
While at the same time riling up the base because a SCOTUS seat is on the line.
with such a short time to investigate and the fact that his happened ages ago I expect A is the more likely outcome.
