so i've started reading the washington post since trump got nominated, in the past i only bothered with new yorker / new york times (dat liberal bubble)

anyways i've found i really do care about reading the stuff that's on there which means subscribing

so which do i go for, washington post or new york times?

right now i'm leaning heavily towards the post, something about NYT annoys me (i think it might be gretchen reynolds who seems to keep posting the same article about exercise over and over :doge)

i see pleny of dumbass opinion pieces on the post but somehow i like the post better

Amazon Prime?

I think you get a discounted subscription to the Post (Expanded Bezos Cinematic Universe)

Governor Rick Scott of Florida, appears to be following Donald Trump’s example of dictating policy by Twitter, with potentially far-reaching impacts for the future of US-Cuba relations.

In three simple tweets, Scott threatened to choke state funding from any Florida port that worked with Cuba. Almost immediately, two of them, Port Everglades and the Port of Palm Beach, cancelled the signing of memorandums of understanding with visiting Cuban trade officials.

Holy shit.

If Trump fucks up the Census the consequences will ripple for a decade.

Quote
A White House draft executive order proposing to restrict foreign worker visas and target immigrants who get federal aid also recommends that the U.S. Census ask about immigration status, a change that experts said could have far-reaching consequences not only on immigrants but also on local economies and political redistricting.

Annual questionnaires from the Census Bureau already ask whether respondents are citizens. But probing into the status of those who are not would be new, and Census experts say it would have a detrimental effect on future counts.

“It will drive the response rate down enormously,” said Kenneth Prewitt, a former director of the Census Bureau who is now a professor of public affairs at Columbia University. Immigrants here illegally are unlikely to answer questions about their status, he said, adding that the resulting undercount could have chilling effects.

“If you drive those people out of the Census, the consequence is that they’re not in it,” he said. “It’s a step toward not counting the people you don’t want to count. And that goes very far in redrawing legislative boundaries.”
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/social-issues/white-house-proposal-to-ask-immigration-status-in-census-could-have-chilling-effect-experts-say/2017/02/01/1fc51b8e-e8af-11e6-bf6f-301b6b443624_story.html?utm_term=.583eaeac016c

(long article)

Everything is based on accurate pop counts.

Districts
Funding
Resources.

And guess which parts of the country get hurt more with undercounting?

I would disagree.  Census fuckery pissed off the people who wouldn't have voted for the Conservatives anyway.  It was a small factor.  But one of the dozens of little things the Conservatives did that turned moderate voters (like moi) against them, yes.

I think it's mostly the Conservatives going ham on the anti-muslim culture war stuff + Mulcair tripping over the issue in Quebec + Trudeau running a near-picture-perfect campaign for the marathon that it was.  (Yes, yanks, an 11-week election campaign is a marathon for us.  Stop laughing)

I would say it was more the last two factors opening the door for Trudeau. In a way, it was a classic Liberal victory; get people annoyed or tired with the Conservatives, and take all of the NDP's votes. Of course Jack had given the NDP life in recent years, but last election as you say, Mulcair messing up proved to be the window Trudeau needed to pull those NDP voters to the middle and give him the decisive victory
And obviously the wildcard factor of "inevitability" (although maybe Trudeau just got lucky in that regard when compared to Hillary)

What is amazing to me is how gawdamned disciplined Trudeau was for those 11 weeks.  Especially as compared to his time as Liberal leader before the writ dropped, and as PM since then.

He is a fucking gaffe machine if you leave him to his own devices.  Whether it's admiring China's "basic dictatorship" before the election, or his vacationing with family friend Aga Khan, cash-for-access hypocrisy, eulogising Uncle Fidel after, he does fuck up, it does make his near-flawless campaign performance all the more remarkable.

wow if true

Not sure how the masked group was so easily identified tbh, though they weren't the only ones participating. Antifa appeared to be the main agitators who were present waving large flags, and are believed to be the ones responsible for the other incidents such as the pepper spraying of a woman wearing a 'Make Bitcoin Great Again' hat and the attacks a little further away. The idea that it was right-wingers or Milo's grand plan seems fairly specious.

Kept open a long stream of the event that was filmed while walking around and the crowd was cheering them, in the case of the bonfire booing the police when it was extinguished. I mean, when there was a guy checking on a man believed to be a Trump supporter laying unconscious in the outer perimeter and had to tell others "I'm not a neo-nazi" just to appease those around him Those types should be weeded out from the get-go tbh.

Edit: somehow the history of that expression passed me by completely. God damn it :doge

The coalition we didn't have because he turned the primary into a revolt against lifelong Democrats instead of the process for selecting a champion against the Republican Party in November.

Nah, you can talk shit about the court as long as you abide by their rulings.

The worst case scenario would have been the Trump administration not recognizing the stay as valid and continuing the ban in defiance of the court, since the judicial branch has no way to enforce its decisions other than hoping the executive branch respects its authority.

No, that seemed reasonable. They bet on the decency of the America people and lost. I would have done the same thing, except I wanted to elevate Cruz.

No one could foresee that a guy who was caught on tape admitting to sexual battery would get 62 million votes. They misjudged the core moral character of the American right.

And exposed the fact that there isn't a "moral character". It was all over-inflated BS and 8 years of watching Foxake News during the Obama admin should have shown them that.

Not Bill, but Hillary is a very moral person and a good role-model. That aside, anyone who claims to vote based on "morals" who cast a ballot for Trump has none. When the Hollywood Access tape came out, I really expected lots of conservative Christian voters to just stay home. I didn't think they'd cross over and vote Clinton, but I thought their consciences wouldn't allow them to pull the level for Trump. Clearly I was wrong.

The short version is I drastically underestimated what Americans, particularly religious Americans, would be willing to tolerate.

Not many people actually think that, thought. People understimated Trump fuckery but HRC overstimated her popularity and good will.

The Press going its way with Trump give us stupid shit like Pepe being a Neonazi, that ended helping scumbags like Richard Spencer than anything else.

Yeah, well those people are very wrong, and honestly a little stupid. Maybe more than just a little stupid.

I also overestimated the ability of the American public to see what through what were clear nothing-burgers (emails, Clinton Foundation, Benghazi).

Either way, the fact is that it's absurd that a guy who is on tape admitting to sexual battery, admitted to bribing public officials on national television during the debates, has cheated on multiple wives, has a fraud case against him, and is documented as having ripped off his contractors, got the vast majority of the Christian vote in this country. That is what many of us failed to anticipate.

It's an issue in politics that gets hyped up as some kind of scandal or as significant in some way, but which actually has nothing of substance behind it.

See: Clinton's emails, Benghazi Sunday show talking points, meetings with Clinton Foundation donors, etc.

Well, they cost her the election so is not like they were nothing. You and I may thing they were overblown but it helped to create the image of Hillary as the anti christ.

I don't entirely agree with that, although the things he said about abortion absolutely helped him, but equally as important with Christian voters, if not more so, was his willingness to "put Muslims in their place."

No see the thing is, one the one hand you got "oh yeaaaah boy, when you're famous them ladies let you do anything to 'em" vs. someone who's been put up as the "expert" of the two but has been put under investigation several time.

So one is a lot more relatable to the average schmuck, and even if he's an asshole, at least it's visible.
Clinton is a shady character, and you need to scrap under the 10 layers of "I'm a nice lady who wants nice things for everyone" to see that. That's why a lot of people don't trust her.

The biggest problem with her was two decades of mudslinging.  The other problem is that she isn't charismatic enough for people to not give a shit about the mudslinging (as compared to Obama, Bill, etc)

One get the distinct feeling that they let him go have fun with the Twitterphone while his staff is doing all the boring grown up stuff.

It really is incredible he's asking that on twitter.

You're the fucking president, you dope!

But Trump supporters will still rush to his defense. Amazing.

He's not interested in the legal argument, he thinks he can substitute the court of public opinion to this.
