Why hasn't Trump pardoned Roger yet?

The gunman who allegedly killed 12 people in a Virginia Beach municipal building Friday had resigned his position with the city hours before, according to the Virginian-Pilot.

The gunman, identified as DeWayne Craddock, had been a longtime public utilities engineer with the city and had emailed his superiors that day to give them his two weeks’ notice, according to city officials.

“We’re determining where that letter is,” City Manager Dave Hansen said at a Sunday news conference, according to the Pilot. “He notified his chain of command [Friday].”

12 people die in a shooting and it doesn't even dominate a daily news cycle.

Yesterday I read that someone had set himself on fire on the white house lawn in protest and it wasn't even a blip on the radar.  :doge

It was more or less a sidenote in the Sun Trump interview.
Quote
IT was one of those days in Trump’s Washington DC.That morning, special counsel Robert Mueller had suggested the President be impeached for obstructing justice.

Then, a few hours before our appointed 20-minute slot with him, a man set himself on fire and burned himself to death on a lawn 200 metres from the Oval Office. But by 5pm, there seemed to be only one thing on POTUS’s mind.“I have a question for you,” said Donald Trump, as he sat down behind the Oval Office’s famous Resolute desk, a gift from Queen Victoria.“Tell me, what is going on? Who’s it going to be?”, and our interview started with a few minutes’ gossip on who’d win the Tory leadership race.

Every Dem running would sign off on an incremental bill when it becomes clear they don't have the votes for single payer. I don't know that it's useful to pretend otherwise.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yes but saying it out loud now is basically negotiating yourself down. A president who gets elected running on single payer is in a stronger bargaining position.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Taking a hard line on a health plan during campaign season with no fallback plan or consensus on actual priorities is how the GOP fucked themselves on ACA repeal.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
You can still signal which planks of your health plan are the "signature" non-negotiable parts without explicitly pre-conceding the rest!
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Maybe, but at this point it's just an argument about the tactics of campaign rhetoric rather than actual health care. Which is a comforting debate, cause it lets us pretend we can significantly change American politics if only we find the right electoral strategy, when in fact M4A is dead on arrival and we're all fucked.

I don't think that's actually true (yes I am aware of the polling), but it would become true once it was the status quo.

Here is a fun series of articles:

Quote
10-year yield continues collapse on slowing growth fears, hits session low under 2.07%
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/03/us-bonds-treasurys-tick-lower-as-investors-await-data-auctions.html

Quote
The yield curve is no longer a reliable recession predictor, according to Wells Fargo Securities
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/05/31/yield-curve-is-no-longer-a-reliable-recession-predictor-wells-fargo.html

Previously, on the Yield Curve:

Quote
ALAN GREENSPAN, the Federal Reserve chairman, raised more than a few eyebrows in November when he said in testimony before the Joint Economic Committee of Congress that there was no need to worry that the yield curve had flattened and was close to inverting. The yield curve, he said, has lost its ability to forecast recessions.

https://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/18/business/yourmoney/thrown-for-a-yield-curve.html

2006
Quote
Consider the inverted yield curve as the equivalent of an economic bogeyman. It’s when the natural order up-ends and short-term interest rates are higher than long-term ones.

The Treasury bond yield curve inverted December 27 for the first time in five years. That gave shudders to those who see the phenomenon as a harbinger of recession. And yet, the U.S. economy is strong, and surveys show most forecasters think it will stay that way.

:bow when everyone agrees that democracy isnt able to action like, the only thing Americans support en masse :bow2

Part of the problem is people are fucking stupid and Congress goes stupid in kind(most polls that show majority support for Medicare-for-All drop to below if you start asking questions about paying higher taxes or changing current Medicare, to me a sign of ignorance, ripe for manipulation once again).

I remember back to pre-ACA conversations. Where almost everyone was fed up with the current system and knew shit needed to seriously change.

Systemically rampant rescission, denials, lifetime maximums, 45 million uninsured, 45 million under-insured, pre-existing conditions, a million or two annually going bankrupt, 14%+ annual rate hikes in many states.

Never met a conservative in college or elsewhere that thought Switzerland was a bad idea when explained to them. Fast forward 3 months into the healthcare debate and 40% of the country is clutching about socialism and death panels. Another 25% only wanted healthcare reform that fits their magical thinking. Moderate Democrats run to the Republican position to get away from the bad faith fear-mongering of their opponent's, to which you get shitty incrementalism as the only viable prize...And there you have 100 years of American healthcare politics.

M4A is never happening. Closest thing you could do is just keep expanding Medicaid, and increase hospital/doctor reimbursement in order to increase the # of providers who accept it. Imagine the money that would be saved by people (and businesses) if single people making 40k or lower (and whatever the family equivalents would be) qualified for comprehensive Medicaid plans.

What even is an "apolitical judge" if you start introducing the notion others are "affiliated" and what does "affiliation" even means coming from a system where they're supposed to be independent and impartial ?

I read some of the details. Seems a very contrived way to fix something that doesn't need it (it's not the Supreme Court that is dysfunctional, it's the politics around nominations).

A key witness in former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation of Russian election interference has been charged with transporting child pornography last year, according to court documents.

George Nader, who has a previous conviction on such charges, was charged in federal court in Virginia and is expected to make an initial court appearance in New York.

Nader played an unusual role as a kind of liaison between Trump supporters, Middle East leaders and Russians interested in making contact with the incoming administration in early 2017.

Officials said Nader, 60, was charged by criminal complaint over material he was traveling with when he arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport on Jan. 17, 2018, from Dubai. At the time, he was carrying a cellphone containing visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, officials said. The charges were unsealed after his arrest Monday morning at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

...

He helped arrange a meeting in the Seychelles in January 2017 between Erik Prince, a Trump supporter who founded the private security firm Blackwater, and a Russian official close to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The purpose of the meeting was of particular interest to Mueller’s investigators, and some questions about it remain unanswered, even after Mueller issued a 448-page report on his findings.

People get too caught up on single payer IMO. That's my only issue. Because it's not some magic bullet. What makes single-payer appealing is it's cost control capabilities and setting broad, universal coverage. But you can achieve that in a multitude of ways. It's why the growing militancy around utopic style single-payer or bust bothers me. The goal is efficient UHC that maintains quality and innovation. Not some vaguely defined mechanism for administrative payments.

If cost-control is your goal, a more effective policy would be to deny care to anyone older than 65.

how about you draft the elderly into the military.

- They stay fit longer with the training and stuff
- They are properly fed
- They're not alone
- They have something to do other than watching TV
- They can do something about the things they see on Fox News
- Not as many young people die in wars
- Those in wheelchairs could actually carry quite heavy weaponry
- They wouldn't be around to vote

You're misremembering.

Quote
In United States politics, the gas tax holiday or the gas tax loophole was a proposal made by presidential contenders Arizona Senator John McCain and New York Senator Hillary Clinton to suspend the federal excise tax on gasoline from Memorial Day to Labor Day in the year 2008. Proponents argued that this could potentially reduce the price of gas at the pump by about 18.4 cents a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline and 24.4 cents a gallon for diesel. If it were done, it was estimated the gas tax holiday would save consumers roughly $30 over the three-month period it would be instated.

I think we've all forgotten how batshit the stretch run of the general election was that cycle. Sarah Palin, Joe the Plumber, some truly weird attack ads from the McCain campaign (one saying Obama wanted to give kindergarteners sex ed, and the spot with the weird Biblical imagery calling Obama "the one").

The most wrong I've ever been was thinking that people would stop freaking out about Obama once he was in office and they saw that he wasn't a Muslamosocialist Manchurian candidate.  hahaha oops

Someone should inform them that Trump has started to implement additional taxes for Mexico, as well.
