etiolate is an English word meaning the bleaching or paling due to lack of sunlight, most often used in relation to plants. The origin is French, the verb etoile for to bleach. I use it because I have pale skin and like to plant. (Growing shishito peppers this spring.) It's also a word with great type balance. It looks a bit like a suspension bridge.

etoilet is what people say when they can't read, but it amuses me so I roll with it

spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's pronounce ee-tea-au-late.

Guys this thread got three new pages when I was out.

Did anything happen or is it fuckery?

Eh, you know, Trump jeopardized national security by innapropriately aiding the Russians.

Fox News and company coincidentally felt the time following that revelation would be better spent reminding everyone "his name is Seth Rich!"

Etoilet did etoilet sort of things

Some idiot: :ego  got dragged into that etoilet vortex.

So yeah, mostly fuckery.... Or, a relatively ordinary news cycle in Trump's America.

Why die on a hill over blatant fake news that has been obviously fake for quite some time. The entire premise of that story is that Wikileaks received leaked info directly from a US based source, not from hackers with ties to Russia. It's a story that rejects the findings of virtually every US intelligence group. To make matters worse it deals with conspiracy theories that claim Hillary/democrats/Obama/whoever had someone killed...for what exactly.

This is pizzagate all over again. In fact it kind of ties into it: why murder someone to simply prevent ugly but legal political shit from being revealed...surely he was killed to attempt to hide something BIGGER, like kids being raped!

Mr. Douthat, I attempt to read your Sunday columns every week, and often find myself breaking away part way through. However this piece is a remarkable description of the situation at hand, the options, and the trade-offs. Not to mention, you offer memorable turns of phrase including "imperium bestrides." For all of our sakes, I hope everyone in Congress reads your column tonight. Thanks from a lifelong Democrat who is trying hard to learn from all points of view.
The 25th Amendment Solution to Remove Trump
Quote
And as hard and controversial as a 25th Amendment remedy would be, there are ways in which Trump’s removal today should be less painful for conservatives than abandoning him in the campaign would have been — since Hillary Clinton will not be retroactively elected if Trump is removed, nor will Neil Gorsuch be unseated. Any cost to Republicans will be counted in internal divisions and future primary challenges, not in immediate policy defeats.

Meanwhile, from the perspective of the Republican leadership’s duty to their country, and indeed to the world that our imperium bestrides, leaving a man this witless and unmastered in an office with these powers and responsibilities is an act of gross negligence, which no objective on the near-term political horizon seems remotely significant enough to justify.

There will be time to return again to world-weariness and cynicism as this agony drags on. Right now, though, I will be boring in my sincerity: I respectfully ask Mike Pence and Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell to reconsider their support for a man who never should have had his party’s nomination, never should have been elevated to this office, never should have been endorsed and propped up and defended by people who understood his unfitness all along.

Now is a day for redemption. Now is an acceptable time.
is this that post-irony media i've been hearing so much about from intellectuals

It comes from Assange himself. It's not like pizzagate.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Rich was the wiki source for DNC, since Assange heavily inferred that. The rest of the stuff is *shrug*.

Why would someone that hates the Clintons be adding to the conspiracy that the Clinton's killed someone without providing any evidence? It's a riddle that strains the bounds of human understanding. If only there was historical precedent for this, it might help us piece together the clues.

Gosh darn that Russia! Y'know, I was cool with them encroaching on Ukraine and their assassinating oppositional voices and their letting the church weed its way into state power, but now I suddenly am concerned about them and they're my number one threat as long as Romney doesn't says so!

Quote
A video of at least some of the fight, posted online on the Voice of America’s Turkish-language Twitter account, shows men wearing dark suits charging past a police line towards sign-wielding protesters and assaulting them. Some of the dark-suited, charging men appeared to be carrying holstered firearms. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had met earlier in the day with U.S. President Donald Trump, also spent time at the Turkish ambassador Serdar Kılıç's residence on Tuesday.

Trump is at 39.9% approval, 55% disapproval in the RCP average today. -15.1 spread is the biggest he's had so far.

Also, Ossoff has climbed to even money in the prediction markets. He was at 40% until this past week. I honestly think Ossoff takes this.

Ehhhhhh. I'm extremely leery of Ossoff's chances. Seen too many GA run-offs end in disaster for the democrat.

I really wish the media had been paying more attention to the MT special election- 1) it's next week and 2) it's in a state where Dems win statewide elections from time to time.

Hopefully they win both.

I hate how Trump winning is supposed to prove that polls are worthless.  Maybe Sam Wang won't claim certainty in the face of narrow margins next time, but if you see something like a 10% swing it's as valid as it ever was.

Ps- I still like Sam Wang.

I wager that Nola doesn't believe that there is no increase in Russia concern lately. I wager that he doesn't believe that there's been no increase of negative views of Russia in social media. He doesn't believe that public concern over Russia has stayed the same.

That's my insight. He can say I'm wrong.

Don't move goalposts toilet.

You inferred that Democrats took a position of disconcern and even tolerance of Russia and Russia's actions Pre-Trump. Implying a flip flop. Inferring, I assume, a heavy prevalence of "Trump Derangement Syndrome" being the driving factor?..As the talking point goes.

Though if you re-read what I said, I didn't say the left is devoid of that sort of partisan driven flip flopping, mindless partisan loyalty, irrational hyperbole, or moral relativity, only that you might want to keep in mind that the left is still trailing the right by a pretty good margin in those departments. So you might want to think more carefully about jumping down the well of the Right's ongoing collective Freudian projection about the left. Since it doesn't seem to be nearly as present as the rhetoric commands. The whole "glass houses and stones" angle.

But to your new point, sure, there is definitely a general heightening of concern on the left toward Russia. But why shouldn't there be? I know polls will show that the left used to think Russia was not the greatest geopolitical threat, but they didn't think they were benign flowers either. But you know current events change people's calculus. And I think a country that engages in an escalation of asymmetric espionage, including possible collusion with a president's campaign, with the overarching goal of destabilizing the western alliances and pushing the world toward a more 19th century real politik arrangement with Russia expanding its influence, justifies a calculus restructuring....then on the other hand, you have the right in the face of that going "maybe he's not that bad of a guy this Putin fella?"
