Will there even be any of the original cabinet left by the end of Trump's first term?

You don't want the cast to be too stale for next season of the show.

I know gun control is largely ineffectual policy at reducing homicide rates but it's hard not to feel disgusted. 50 people dead and 200 injured, how can one person even do that? Also thank God my parents didn't move to Vegas this week like they planned and postponed for a few more. I know my dad would have drunk on the Strip on a Sunday night.

How Rachel Maddow prepares those epic monologues
"Profiles: The Storyteller — How Rachel Maddow constructs a narrative," by The New Yorker's legendary Janet Malcolm:

"Maddow's artistry is most conspicuous in her monologues, which can span as long as twenty-four uninterrupted minutes... The hour of the show is the culmination for Maddow of a workday that starts at around 12:30 P.M. .. At two o'clock, she meets with her staff of twenty young men and women in a room equipped with a whiteboard." Then, she reads and reads.

Maddow: "I should start writing at four-thirty. Sometimes I don't start writing until six-thirty. ... It's a bad process. It's impressive in one way, but it's — reckless. It kills my poor staff. ... They need to put in all the visual elements and do the fact-checking and get it into the teleprompter. It's a produced thing and requires everybody to do everything fast."

"I could roll in at eight o'clock and have my producers tell me what to say and book seven people for me to chat with about the news. There are people who have made a very successful living doing that in this work. I just don't want to do it that way. I want to have something to say that people don't already know every single night, every single segment."

Before he opened fire late Sunday — killing at least 50 people at a country music festival on the Las Vegas Strip — the gunman Stephen Paddock lived a quiet life for years in a small town outside Las Vegas.

...

Family members said that Paddock spent much of his retirement in recent years staying in hotels in Las Vegas and gambling. They said he listened to country music and went to concerts at Vegas hotels.
Yeah, I'd say that probably checks out.

Cable news has basically devolved into "Ghost Stories for Seniors". They find new and different ways to scare old people.

You think of MSNBC as a slightly hipper and younger network, but their median age is the same as Fox (65).

Fucking lmao at anyone taking it at face value that this dude randomly converted to Islam in his mid 60s as a white guy outside of Vegas and then killed 60 people in the name of Allah. All because ISIS said it.
Rush was noting how the media didn't seem to be investigating this at all, when ISIS is out there basically explaining the whole thing! Completely baffling! ISIS issued a statement!

I know it's impossible, but if a president was ever going to be able to get the gun nuts to give up some of their guns it could be Trump. He has such a religious following amongst conservatives if he was like "Look, you really don't need it." They might actually listen.

Not that it'll ever happen.

There's literally a bill going through congress right now regarding silencers for rifles. For the protection of the ears of hunters.  :doge

Makes perfect sense. Guns are incredibly loud, and wearing ear protection is a security risk for hunters.

But folks need to understand that "silencers" aren't really a thing outside of Hollywood and video games. The things people call silencers are really just suppressors - they don't silence guns, they only make them a tiny bit less loud. Actual, real silencers only work with small caliber subsonic ammunition like .22 rimfire, in single shot weapons, for a few shots. Low rate of fire, short range, no penetration. They're only really used to hunt vermin and obviously in covert ops.

There are a ton of important things regarding gun control one could discuss right now, "silencers" aren't really one of them. Bump stocks though, that's something that needs to be talked about. Or just outright banned.

Quote from: Caleb Keeter
I’ve been a proponent of the 2nd amendment my entire life. Until the events of last night. I cannot express how wrong I was. We actually have members of our crew with CHL licenses, and legal firearms on the bus.

They were useless.

We couldn’t touch them for fear police might think we were part of the massacre and shoot us. A small group (or one man) laid waste to a city with dedicated, fearless police officers desperately trying to help, because of access to an insane amount of fire power.

Enough is enough.

Writing my parents and the love of my life as a goodbye last night and a living will because I felt like I wasn’t going to live through the night was enough for me to realize that this is completely and totally out of hand. These rounds were powerful enough that my crew guys just standing in a close proximity of a victim shot by this fucking coward received shrapnel wounds

We need gun control RIGHT. NOW.

My biggest regret is that I stubbornly didn’t realize it until my brothers on the road and myself were threatened by it.

We are unbelievably fortunate to not be among the number of victims killed or seriously wounded by this maniac.

There is no study I could point to that says this repeal will increase the number of people that will suffer from gun violence or crime. Probably be hard pressed to find studies showing the restriction is a pressing problem requiring immediate action either.  But what shit like this does signal, and to me why it is important, is that it illustrates that you have a party, that once again in the face of tragedy and a country plagued by gun violence, only ever musters up the courage to repeal more gun laws and temporarily offer empty platitudes.

Sort of like how the one other bill they put on offer on guns was to allow people with concealed carry permits to cross state lines and ignore the laws in that new state.

But thankfully the GOP, that always talks about these shootings as mental health issues - or at least those that don’t involve brown people or guys with Bernie posters - have been good stewards by trying to pass healthcare laws for the past 8 months that would slash mental health funding and open the door to dropping some of those coverages.

Don't need mental health funding when there are no more mentally ill people (because they all killed themselves)

Noticed the news is starting to play up copycat fears. And the ISIS thing has trickled down effectively into the Breitbart wing and are combining with the aforementioned stories to suggest this is the first in a wave of ISIS attacks. So everyone go crawl in a hole and die or whatever.

I’ve been a proponent of the 2nd amendment my entire life. Until the events of last night. I cannot express how wrong I was. We actually have members of our crew with CHL licenses, and legal firearms on the bus.

...

We need gun control RIGHT. NOW.
Looked at his twitter but I don't see anything about how they'll be getting rid of those firearms on the bus and requiring the crew members not carry. :doge

I see it mentioned all the time, in that you have to remove them from the number of gun deaths first and that it's misleading for lieberals to include them. Ohhh, you mean...because...

TRUMP: We will keep him for another couple of weeks. By that time — come here. Special guy. I will tell you. Special. In addition to Tom, I want to thank [Small-Business Administration head] Lisa McMahon. I always joke, I said she is in charge of small business and small business is massive business when you add it up. She has done an incredible job. Built a great company with her husband, Vince McMahon. I wanted her so badly for this position. Nobody knows how to build a company like those. Like this woman. She has been amazing in business, and we want to thank you very much.

Mick Mulvaney is here, and Mick is in charge of a thing called budget. I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you are throwing our budget out of whack. We spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico, and that's fine. We saved a lot of lives. If you look at the — every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds of people that died and what happened here with a storm that was just totally overbearing. No one has ever seen anything like that. What is your death count?

Just a few minutes later in the press conference, he began talking about how he was happy to spend “hundreds of millions” on the F-35 — a warplane that has yet to fly in a single American combat mission.

“So amazing, we are ordering hundreds of millions of dollars of new airplanes for the Air Force, especially the F-35,” Trump told an Air Force officer who was attending the press conference. “You like the F-35? ... You can't see it. You literally can't see it. It's hard to fight a plane you can't see.”

Priorities bruh.

And I will just say, as someone that was in St Bernard Parish for Katrina, 16 will not be the final death count. It took months to tally up the death toll. Truth be told the final number is still not believed to be 100% accurate.

To get a better picture is going to require going house by house, inventorying care facilities, coordinating with local law enforcement and recovery groups, and probably other things I’m not even thinking about.
