I've heard the DMA and Body Harvest stuff was true before, though it was more that Miyamoto is a genuinely good guy who wanted teams to succeed, but he tries to shape others ideas into a more coherent vision to him and it caused conflict between NOA who thought the game was perfect as is versus Nintendo Japan who really wanted it to be an RPG that DMA got caught in the middle of. Politics is a bitch.

The DKC quote I would say was iffy because I remember one of the Rare team leads at the time say in an interview before that Miyamoto and Rare had a really mischievous sense of humor and Nintendo's Japan staff copped onto Rare's humor very quickly (As Nintendo staffers admired a lot of the UK home computing Scene and had imported ZX Spectrums to see what that region was up to and there was a lot of admiration for British culture in their offices). So Miyamoto saying "Your game is mediocre" could have easily been banter between himself and Tim Stamper that got missed in translation. Especially when you hear the story that Rare used Grabbed By The Ghoulies to fuck with Miyamoto on purpose because Miyamoto hated crude humor and would always send back builds saying "Game needs tweaks. Stop putting crude humor in". Which only made Rare hide it more so he would find it or make it more blatant to annoy him. Nintendo were likely going to release the game as is anyway so it was really just them fucking about and bantering with Nintendo.

Which made it funnier because the game was basically finished when Microsoft bought Rare. MS loved the crude humor and told them if it got an E-Rating it would stay in. And it did get an E-Rating. Despite outright Hentai references and god knows how many masturbation jokes.

The level design is more thoughtful and the per-level gimmicks are actually fun and varied. They also nailed the balance with ridable animals/animal transformation, and had the right amount of collectables (DK3 and 64 can go suck a dick.)

The level themes were also really top notch, matched with some of the best game music ever by David Wise.

Yeah, I bet that Ghoulies thing was really that he pushing them into putting even more of the crude humor as a private joke to see what they actually could really get away with if they hid it well enough if he noted it in his emails to the dev, but the project lead didn't tell the team that it was a prank (bro).

In looking into the issue, it's hard to say if the whole Argonaut thing holds any water. There isn't a lot info out there, and virtually all of it comes from latter-day interviews by two former Argonaut devs. And it's entirely possible that the reason, or at least part of the reason, the Yoshi platformer wasn't picked up for full development by Nintendo was because they were already doing early design work on Super Mario 64 and didn't want it to interfere with that.
