The unparsed BBCode tags in the thread title are triggering me more than anything tbh :trigger

I'll let you in on a little secret: I did this purposefully. :doge

I hope MP4 turns out well. :-\

Nintendo managed to turn Retro around and put out a stellar series of games though so there's hope they can do the same with their new team.

I'm assuming NLG is working on Metroid Prime 4. That series does need some ingenuity and western design input as Nintendo doesn't have extensive insight on how to craft a story-driven FPS.

While I threw some shade at NLG since they apparently have difficulty taking design direction or meshing with Nintendo's "global audience" vision, they do thrive when the leash isn't as tight.

Wasn't a new internal team confirmed? That rules out NLG, as they're neither new nor internal. I think it's either developed in Japan, or by a new team at NST, or maybe even NERD? They were supposed to be a tech studio, and the early employees were mostly engine and low level programmers, but they also started hiring artists and actual game developers about a year ago. A Metroid made in France could work out really, really well.

Yeah I didn't read the fact sheet they put out announcing a brand new development team which is why I edited my post, lol.

I don't know who it is but I have a hunch. Yours is a pretty good guess.

I feel like the only one who remembers that by order is ecclesia castlevania and the metroidvanis concept was overdone and well and cooked. They clearly weren't making great games anymore.

They had low budgets and were stuck re-using assets, IIRC.  They still made very good, playable games.  The worst is probably Harmony Of Dissonance, but even that was fun enough once through.

Mercury Steam working on this is pretty great tbh. At the very least a much better choice than Next Level Games who are a little too keen on forcing their own disjointed vision on a game.

More to the point, Mercury Steam is a highly competent developer with a solid programming team. Their co-director Jose Luis Márquez was originally a badass programmer.

Nintendo, specifically Yoshio Sakamoto, is in charge of gameplay and vision so any concerns are shortsighted.

I'm not enjoying this much at all.  Forced analog stick use is a near dealbreaker.  The level design feels very weak and I'm constantly thinking "Hollow Knight did this better".

I really like what I've played so far. The controls take a bit of getting used to [and tweaking them a bit could have made them better] and it's a bit too eager to give up it's secrets, but it's definitely Metroid. Feels like it's been forever since we've had a proper 2D Metroid, Zero Mission is over 13 years old now [no, Other M doesn't count and also it's bad]. The counter attack is okay, I dunno if it really adds that much but it works well enough once you figure out the timing and it gives the developer's an excuse to use enemies that have slightly different attacks patterns from normal. I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there, but it's inclusion also doesn't bother me. Graphics are pretty nice for the 3DS, meaning they're dated by current standards, but solid art design helps to patch over some of the deficiencies.

Also, remixed Metroid 2 OST and reworked Prime series tracks are pretty nice:

Only two complaints:
  • I wish I could use the D-pad.
  • I wish they dialed back the parry system a bit; feels like every enemy requires a parry.

Music, graphics, and exploration is top notch. Definitely my third favorite 2D Metroid right after Super and Zero Mission.

You get the ice beam pretty early. Just shoot once or twice with that then follow up with a quick rocket and you can stop parrying if you don't like it.

The final boss was FUCKING AWESOME.

Pretty good game outside of a shaky beginning.  Not the best Metroid game, but considering Super Metroid is the best game of all time, it's hard to beat that.

I like the parry system, it's simple to initiate and timing-based, but my issue is that you do it too much and if there is more than one enemy near you they tend to do a parry attack one after another. That's very frustrating since you can't parry multiple enemies; something like a token-based attack system could have fixed that issue outright.

Anyways parrying becomes less of an focus a couple of hours in once you get the wave beam since your attacks become significantly more powerful.

I haven't gotten there yet but the forced running segment before that was complete and utter trash. Really brought to light that the game's analog stick use does not pair well with split second timing.

The autoscroll was definitely the lowest point of the game but I didn't find it to be that bad. The actual boss fight with the thing was great. All the bespoke bosses are really great, they utilize the skills you obtain in really smart ways. Especially the final Metroid boss.

Area 3 and it’s bullshit burrowing Metroids have almost killed my interest in this game. There are a lot of things done right here, but I really hope that the parry mechanic doesn’t return.

So does parrying truly become less important as you get stronger? I started this up a few weeks ago but didn't really get far.

Pretty much every enemy still has parryable skills that need to be avoided or parried with the later being the easier option a lot of times.

Area 4 has 3 or 4 major upgrades less than 20m in. Just putting Super Missiles in Area 3 would’ve made it considerably less annoying.
