Even the Virtual Console on the Wii had save states. Well, one save state I guess.

Nintendo's emulation record is actually pretty good all things considered, even if some of it is done because it's easier/cheaper. Like all the N64 VC games had rendering at 640x480 even when the original games never did. Heck, even when they did those Zelda discs for the GameCube they output all nice and crisp resolutions instead of original ones because it'd be dumb to specifically run the games at the old resolutions and write something for the GCN to output them.

I want to say the Homebrew guys found that the VC N64 emulator even allowed for stuff that's technically not accurate like allowing both an emulated rumble pak and emulated controller pak though Nintendo never got around to using that in any of the VC games I don't think. Not that there were many N64 games. Plus they did stuff like swap out the ad textures in games like Wave Race 64 which is still a dodgy feature in many emulators. (Though I suppose Nintendo probably could have just edited the ROM in some more advanced manner. IIRC, they may not have. They did "patch" some VC games at later points too.)

When you consider the only thing Sony ever did was the smoothing in the PS2 before output since the games ran off the actual PS1 hardware first. And only recently did Microsoft get around to letting emulated games take advantage of the improved hardware to run at higher framerates, finally brute force the Xbox emulation, etc. Nintendo is actually pretty great. It's about the one area where there's little to criticize about the company especially when compared to their competitors. I mean if you want "legitimate" BC/emulation from the original company.

Then there's their hardware usage like in the GBA when you plugged in a Game Boy game, allowing all the different screen formats and palette choices. Even the GCN BC in the Wii was a smart hardware choice in terms of ensuring compatibility, just turn the clocks down since the GCN games won't be looking for the new hardware stuff anyway.

:trumps I get it's a good business decision, but the only people I know that owned it are stay at home moms looking for the newest fad or resellers.

Throwing that much money and active effort to buy a mini emu that doesn't include third party games like FF VI. :donot

FFVI is in the SNES mini you goof:

EU and japanese version always looked the same. Not sure why NOA went for something different, maybe they thought it looked to kiddie or they wanted something that resembled the NES more?

Not edgy enough for 'muhricans.

Quote
ND: The Super NES design is quite square compared to the Super Famicom. What was your motivation for going in that design direction?
LB: The Super Famicom was maybe okay for the market in Japan. For the US, I felt that it was too soft and had no edge. We were always looking at future modular components (even the NES had a connector on the bottom), so you had to design with the idea of stacking on top of other components. I though the Super Famicom didn't look good when stacked and even by itself, had a kind of "bag of bread" look.

Didn't read those wallotexts, but this is going to be a hard pass for me.

A smallish console that can only play some mainstream games and a soon-to-be-ripped SF2? Kinda misses the point of the myriad of genuine classics that are all on the SNES.

Emulating on PC has been perfect and I've never had a problem emulating games with a onscreen phone pad for years (Casually played tons of snes/gba games on commute and even managed to beat Prinny PSP.)

I can see the appeal, but I think I would've dropped money on a system just for easy access to tons of paid VC games and local 2P with the classic controllers.

The price, lack of convience, lack of games etc. seem so off the mark for me.

Yeah, emulators have come a long way. I remember back when I was in high school and my cousin and I were trying to run Megaman X2 on ZSNES, and it was so buggy and glitchy that it was pretty much useless. But now, like you said, SNES (and really nearly all 16 bit game) emulation is nigh perfect.

The only problem right now is that I read some article saying that future OS's and new PC architectures will make emulation much more difficult, and at some point, not even possible without having to rewrite completely new emulators. In that sense, I wouldn't mind getting an SNES mini, even though the price is still kinda shit.

Still, I think we can all agree this is at least better than the NES Mini.  :yuck

NES Classic was pretty good and at a great price point.

This is clearly better though. Can't wait for the eventual N64 Classic in a year or two from now. :drool

Hard pass on the N64 Classic, especially if it uses the same controller design as the original. Hori design or bust.

Would buy if it included the prototype version of Mother 3, StarFox 2-style, though.

Real talk tho, a Gameboy Classic seems like it would be a slam dunk.

Now this would be great. Base it on the GameBoy Pocket mold and it'd sell like bonkers. Thing would have like 1000 hour battery life with a tiny 160x144* screen, even backlit.

They could even do multiple colors to really get the collector crowd. :lawd

* Though that brings up a point: could Nintendo even feasibly source a screen with that small a resolution for the amount of systems they'd need to make? They might even opt for a much higher-res screen and just upscale the games...

Thinking about it, they'd probably just do a GameBoy Color Classic instead of pure-GB, which I would find less interesting as a GB purist but certainly more functional with a wider library to choose from.

The dpad is just godly. Every direction, even diagonals, has very clear definition and it's effortless.

The only issue comfort wise is that the entire thing is a bit flat. I'm too used to controllers filling out my hand these days.

Do the controllers on the SNES mini thing plug/unplug into a regular SNES? Might be worth it just for the 2 controllers if so. Only have 1 really good working SNES pad now.

Yep, probably. Apparently not! But at least none of the versions will have have hardwired controllers like the JP Mini Famicom had. Also the controllers will be original size. :heartbeat

I believe the connection between controller and console is that proprietary wii/nes mini plug. So it won't work with a real SNES. I think adapters exist though.

Just like last week the RSS (internal Bestbuy system) is showing activity with the sku. Last week it was "active" now it's "deactive" which means something should have been happening by now. I don't know if it's that they haven't gotten allocation numbers from Nintendo or what but this is strange activity for a sku in their system. Core blue (newer BB system) has some information about how to handle customer demand for the system as well as script suggestions. It also includes materials for management to print out when there is no stock available all of it seems to be provided by Nintendo themselves.

My OMS order from last week is still active in the system and is awaiting stock at warehouse.

God-tier controllers:

- DualShock 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

It is known.

Dualshock 1-3 were terribly un-ergonomic in my use. DS4 remarkably managed to flip the trend and be surprisingly good. Something about the proportions is better. Prefer it to the X360 pad. Yet to try the Xbone version but MS has been pretty consistent since the lessons learned from the awful original Xbox controllers.

And yea, a Gameboy Classic would be sweet.

All those Walmart cancellation stories are FUD from salty dudes who couldn't get an order in on time.

Walmart is typically very fast when it comes to cancelling orders. If yours wasn't cancelled Friday then you got a system.
