To be fair it's difficult to keep moderation strictly cold and professional (probably the most time efficient for a mod and slows the inevitable burn out) in such a community driven setting of which the mods are part of.
I'm praising the current good intentions over at REEE but on the other hand custom tags, sick burns and silly antics were certainly part of the charm of NeoGAF in the earliest days I browsed it. It was maybe impossible in that context to reform a beloved culture even though it started eating itself out despite the growth of the site probably warranting it (same with Lore's management, why fix it when it's an easy meal ticket already ?). Surely everyone, here included, would have lamented how GAF used to be cool. Still in hindsight, being uncool would have beaten it burned to the ground.
