@TIMU:

https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/04/15/google-starting-to-roll-out-pixel-system-updates-through-play-store/

Technical stuff: https://www.xda-developers.com/android-q-apex-biggest-thing-since-project-treble/

So it still won't be 100% of what goes into a system update, and it's Pixel only (for now, by virtue of Pixels being the first Android Q/10.0 phones.) But there ya go.

Also since I was last in this thread, here's some upcoming Google hardware:

- Stadia Controller
- Nest Hub - aka Google Home Hub renamed
- Nest Hub Max - bigger screen and has a camera
- Pixel 3a/3a XL - cheaper versions of the Pixel 3

With the latter three probably getting announced May 7th.

Amazon and Google finally kissed and made up after like 7-8 years.

Officials YouTube, YouTube TV, and YouTube Kids apps are coming to Amazon Fire devices and TVs.

And Chromecast support is coming to Prime Video.

Nest Hub Max is $229, supports the Thread low-power IoT standard, and has a better front-facing camera than Nest's current top-of-the-line Cam IQ.

Nest is now Google Nest.

Google Home Hub is now Nest Hub and got a price cut to $129.

Pixel 3a starts at $399, includes headphone jack, Pixel 3-quality camera and software updates, and no wireless charging or water resistance. New Pixel color: "Purple-ish."

Insane. If you told this to people in 2010 no one would have believed you.

I always thought Chrome OS had potential but it's still surprising to me.

Speaking of, all Chromebooks that ship in 2019 will have Linux app support, and there's a whole bunch of software updates coming to make it easier to share files between Android/Linux/Chrome OS and debug apps in general.

I think the last thing now for Chrome OS to really compete (for non-gamers obvsly lol) is Adobe suite support...

Works with Nest API is dying :yikes x 1000

This has the potential to easily be the worst and most damaging Google shutdown ever. Keep an eye on the blogosphere for this to blow up sometime before the August shutoff.

Also, all the price cuts:

Google Home (2016)                               $129 -> $99
Google Home Max (2017)                        $399 -> $299
Nest Hub (née Google Home Hub, 2018)   $149 -> $129

Pretty reasonable all around.

Will be interesting to see the Nest brand take over from Google Home for the speakers, probably gonna confuse the fuck out of people for a little while but that may be to Google's benefit -- normies today probably consider the Assistant and a Home speaker synonymous, but by downplaying the Google brand for the product names it highlights Google Assistant more as a distinct entity which can work across many devices, not just a single speaker.

Would be reeeeaaaally weird if they touch the Chromecast's branding though. Short of (stupidly) killing the entire line to launch a Pixel TV or something, even though the name "Chromecast" makes almost zero sense anymore in the context of Google's overall plans, I can't see them messing with something so successful.

Then again, Google. :lol

Treble stuff: https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2019/05/fresher-os-with-projects-treble-and-mainline.html

- Double the amount of devices became eligible for this year's beta program compared to last year
- The latest version of Android (8.0/Oreo) was at 5.7% worldwide by the time I/O 2018 rolled around; this year 10.4% of Android devices are on the latest major version (9.0/Pie) as of I/O 2019

Because I'm a giant nerd, I thought about what the ideal Google hardware lineup might look like after their October even this year...

Pixel 3a and 3a XL      no changes
Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL  new product
Pixelbook 2             new product
Pixel Buds 2            new product

Nest Speak              aka "Google Home 2"
Nest Speak Mini         rename
Nest Speak Max          rename
Nest Hub                no changes
Nest Hub Max            no changes
Nest Thermostat 4       new product
Nest Thermostat 4e      aka "Nest Thermostat E - 2nd Gen"
Nest Protect 3          new product
Nest Cam 3              combination Nest Cam Indoor + Outdoor IQ
Nest Wifi               aka "Google Wifi 2"
Nest Secure             no changes
Detect/Connect/Tag      no changes
Nest Hello              no changes

Chromecast 4            combination Chromecast 3rd Gen + Ultra

I'm not betting on a Pixel Watch but it'd be nice.

Daydream seems to be dead, or getting close to it... :( :'( :fbm

With the Nest line I want the design language on new versions of older products cleaned up to match the direction they've been going in since 2016/2017. And the names to be saner. Google seems fine using iPhone-like numbering for the Pixels, so push that shit to new iterations on your other products too.

Everybody hates video calls. Until we get to a future where we can control the camera with a little drone that follows you around like Navi, fuck it all in the dumpster.

Unrelated, but I really, really want all messaging and communication apps to move to an open standard that keeps your data private. Throw blockchain in the pitch if you need funding and go kill  Google and Apple, Mr. Meat.

https://www.blog.google/products/google-nest/updates-works-with-nest/

- Existing Works With Nest devices and services will continue to work (no shutdown.)
- The original August 31, 2019 shutdown date is now the cutoff date for connecting new devices and services using Works With Nest (instead of the preferred Works With Google Assistant.)
- Reiteration that Amazon Alexa will continue to work, as well as announcing that a set of the most popular third-party Works With Nest services -- if they can't migrate yet to Works With Google Assistant -- will retain their access after accepting regular security audits and allowing more user control over the data.
- Google Assistant Routines will get easier to use and more powerful, presumably to offset some of the sting of losing direct Nest IFTTT support (there is a Google Assistant service on IFTTT, but it doesn't offer direct device access.)

Works With Nest now currently does not have a hard shut-off date, and I would bet it probably won't for a year or two.

Pixel Slate is now $200 across all three models: $599 for m3, $799 for i5, and the i7 is $1399. The Celeron versions which disappeared shortly after launch have yet to reappear, so those are prooooobably dead.

Yeah, it's really slick and works about as well as you could hope. I also dig how easy it is to see and name devices, set a "priority" device, and otherwise manage things will the app. Downside is there's no "local" administration web page/site, so hope you have a mobile device (or Chromebook) nearby.

Though there might be an upgraded model coming in October? But there's been rumored devices before (Pixel Watch) that never ended up getting announced...

Nice. And if a new model is announced, odds are it can be added as a node to an existing Google Wifi mesh as easily as the older model.

I mean you never know, but that would be my bet.

well the current model claims to provide solid coverage for places around 1500 sq ft and reviews i've read all seem very positive; even with the lack of an admin page, apparently you don't feel the need to go into such settings to get the best out of it and tbh i can't remember the last time i ever dicked around with router settings as admin

Nabbing that smaller Pixel 4, probably in white too.

The design seems a bit unbalanced this year, though the XL is an aesthetic improvement without the notch. I'm very pleased both phones once again have identical designs, as I've desired since the first generation.

I will miss the "glass shade" on 1/3rd of the back, even the 3a has it. Ah well.

Pixel Slate is now $100 off on all models *and* includes the $100 official keyboard accessory. IMO it's probably still too floppy for real use, so you're better off shelling out for the $160 Brydge keyboard... but at that point just get a Pixelbook.

Bummer the Pixelbook 2 later this year will be using Intels' 2018 chips and not their 2019 set. Ah well, guess that's how it usually goes...

Nest migration overview. Seems to make sense, and the Google Home app already has some hidden code around it.

If you have Nest connections you want to keep, don't migrate and don't disconnect those services after August 31 (or you won't be able to re-connect them.)

Can I just say: Fuck Googie for making it Q-only? Just like Live Transcribe was Pie-only for a while (thankfully came to Oreo... right before Motorola upgraded my phone to Pie).

Like, why would you make #A11y's OS exclusive?

Like, why would you make #A11y's OS exclusive?

I could see some non-marketing justifications.

- Fewer devices to test (including a far smaller number of resolutions and processors)
- Fewer versions and flavors of Android to test
- It's currently unoptimized code and only works as advertised on flagships but not lower-spec phones (as flagships generally receive OS updates first)
- The feature is in some form of beta and needs real user data to function properly (but not too much data, which a wide release would unleash)
- A significant number of the APIs necessary for it to work are Q/10-exclusive, and need to be backported to the Google Play Services compatibility library and/or the AndroidX APIs to work on past versions (such as Live Transcribe on Oreo)

Burying the lede because obviously low-level API access (not only to display transcriptions, but the ML pipeline to decode and translate system audio in real-time) is needed to make the feature work at all.

Sure, but you're going to advertise it widely (well, on your blog and get news sites to pick it up) only for disabled folks to be told "lol buy the latest shit, you poor" is serious  :maf inducing.

But for real though: Live Captions will be a god send for a shit ton of Youtube videos that don't offer auto-transcribed (even though those are shit, admittedly) captions. If it's as good as the Live Transcription app they've released, it'll be real good.

For instance: RedLetterMedia didn't have subs for a good long while. Why do you think I focused on Jay so much? :doge

Live caption might come in handy when the wife sends me voice messages during work.

I love gesture navigation and use it exclusively on my xiaomi so that's cool as well.

Opt out of ads retargeting - I don't believe you Google.

Focus mode is nice, although the ability to block certain sites like facebook in chrome would be more important for myself than blocking specific apps. Fake edit: Oh, it seems it actually that. Nice :)
