Man, I really did not like book 4, but the first three were real good. Book 1 is one of my favorite books of all time.

Which one, Tehanu? It was a difficult read, but I liked it. Kind of flipped the mythos on its head. The Other Wind was a return to form I thought. I agree that the first one is the best, it made a big impression on me when I read it. So different from other high fantasy of the time: no happy endings, just bittersweet melancholy throughout. The third one (The Farthest Shore) is a close second.

Granted, it's probably been 16-17 years since I've read Tehanu [back when I was in grade school or high school], so I might feel a lot different about it now, but it was such a departure from the previous 3 books that I just didn't like it.

It was weird reading about Ged being weak, vulnerable and powerless. The end where Tehanu transforms into a dragon was badass.

For as poorly received as Tehanu was, it's the least pulpy and imo most important book in the series as far as making a statement that ties in with the rest of her work. The Left Hand of Darkness is one of my favourite novels of all time.
