I did enjoy how the movie is led by a woman, directed by a woman, written by a woman, and they still wrote a female villain whose motivation was that she didn’t look as good in heels. I mean come on.

The RLM video was 100 times better than WW1984 could ever hope to be. Can't believe they're already making another one and bringing Chris Pine back AGAIN.
:dead

Yea like I said jn the movies thread the 80's theme is vastle underused, bork said hey what about the clothes well honestly thats like miminum effort

I said "You mean except for all the hair and clothing styles, cars, interiors, cultural stuff, and that giant mall that looked straight out of Commando?"  There was plenty of '80s' in the movie.  It just generally was less "HEY LOOK THE 80S!!" after that mall scene and the Steve walking around scene.

Maybe the movie was a broader concept where she made a WW movie like it was created in 1984. Which would explain all the weird tonal shifts, lack of action scenes, wedged in love interest angle, corny monologues and bombastic human villain.  So, it was less  about the setting but more about aping the movie tropes of that time.

in another universe I can imagine a WW84 that's like LOOK IT'S THE '80S! in an obnoxious annoying way, I would've thought it would earn some praise for using a light touch, the blockbuster version of subtle

but in that case it shouldn't have had 1984 in the name as if it was important

I thought there would be a more Orwellian bent to the villain or obstacles to overcome based on the title, myself :trumps

Should have been WW 1985 tbh

Wat? How?

I think this movie was intended as a comedy.
There's the Taliban guy fighting against tanks (possibly Soviets or Israeli's) with an AK 47 but he renounces his wish for nuclear weapons because the truth is beautiful and important  :lol

I feel they should also give credit to Mark Frost for Twin Peaks Season 3 staying coherent For the most part. As free as Lynch was with the season, TV is still a collaborative effort. That doesn’t mean they should consider his books canon, of course.

finally got around to the dungeons and dragons commentary

really fun to hear mike reminiscing about his d&d days and epic game-ruining story  :lol

it's both surprising and not surprising that he was into that, at first he doesn't seem like the right kind of nerd but really yeah he's all about imaginative storytelling

it'd be really fun if they started up a game, mike and rich and maybe josh could dm, not sure who else would get in on that

I bet macaulay would be up for a session

Mike being a secret D&D nerd was a pretty big surprise. Rich being genuinely curious was cute. :lol

Jay saying Marlon Wayans was doing a minstrel character was good for a shock. :o :lol

Mike regaling the tale of seeing D&D in theaters with someone he didn't know was high at the time had me rolling. :lol

Worth the price.

Also the D&D commentary track has to be one of the least "tied" to the actual movie I've ever seen. :lol 90% of it could be an unrelated podcast, they extremely rarely comment on anything actually going on in the movie. To the point if your sync is messed up it could be a while before you even tell. :lol

Like, they comment on the movie itself a lot, just not because of anything actually happening.

Mike is explaining all this stuff as if it's a novel concept like you gain "experience points" to "level up" and you have "hit points" and Rich is listening politely as if it's new to him even though he knows all this stuff by heart as a gamer  :heart

Yep.

Maybe it's because I hadn't built up any expectations beforehand but I think I liked it more than The Nice Guys and and almost as much as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Very cool homage to something like Chinatown or The Long Goodbye and the tonal shift for the last act totally works.

Very glad I saw their recommendation because otherwise I would have completely overlooked it.

When they mentioned it was a TIFF premiere I went and watched the YMS review (he reviews every single premiere from TIFF and a few other Canadian festivals each year), expecting him to hate it (I disagree with his opinions on many films but I like listening to him because he backs up his thoughts and makes smart comparisons to other films, usually), but he was actually mildly positive. For YMS and a genre film that's pretty much a glowing review. :lol

Yup and that's why I love him. I've checked out sooooo much (good!) artsy fartsy stuff I never would have even known about otherwise thanks to him. His "Best movies of <year>" are easily some of the best indie film resources on YouTube IMO.

It's rare but when RLM and YMS overlap, or step a little into each other's territory, it's usually stellar content. (e.g. RLM spotlighting some more non-Hollywood stuff, and YMS loving a genre film.)
