I'm two missions into chapter 5 I think (Saint Denis) and I thiiiiiiiiink I'm starting to like this more than RDR1 even though I have some issues with the controls. Something about the realism makes it clunkier than it's predecessor to me, but not enough where it's glaring for me.

Great fucking videogame.

Make sure to put these controls

free aim instead of lockon
Standard fps controls
deadzone 0
fov max
aim acceleration up by three

game feels much better that way.

Im 45 hours in, halfway done with the amazing story. Rocking a sick ass beard. Could tell so many stories, best emergent gameplay ever! Not to mention the amazing story and side activities! Wow I'm still constantly surprised this far in. Saint Denis is a technical marvel.. i love just walking around slowly and shit will just happen. All the little details are crazy too.

Looks like HDR is kind of half assed, and if anything you may want to turn it off.

https://www.reddit.com/r/reddeadredemption/comments/9sn0zh/digital_foundry_hdr_analysis_rdr2_has_fake_hdr/
Quote
actually he's not totally right when he says we have nothing to lose by enabling HDR, in SDR the 4k output is in RGB while it is only in YUV422 in HDR, so we actually can gain image details by not going HDR while we gain nothing by going HDR, so back to SDR until a correct patch is done
Quote
You are right, I didn't mention that in this situation the RGB output is superior, also the other thing you lose out on is a some minor black level elevation, which increases the futher you increase the brightness.

That RGB output may be advantagous if you are using a pro, as that per pixel data from the sparse rending they are using may be lost as the chroma is reduced.

Also if you're on a Pro, forcing the game to run at 1080p, without the system wide supersampling mode enabled, will result in better performance and a sharper image versus the "4K" 2160p output mode.

What a shitshow. Im considering waiting for a PC version. Intentionally skimping on such things in a high budget game just leaves bad taste.

Eh trust me the standard fps controls are way more intuitive. And the deadzone is very important to turn off honestly. And as you say you experience the controls as clunky, so dont be afraid to change some shit :).

Standard fps makes it so you can click the left stick to start running, no tapping bs or holding a to run. Square is cover/search, X is crouch/stealth, circle is melee and reload.

But play however you like, I just feel like standard fps was a great scheme for GTA V and it works like a charm in RDR2 as well.

Ive been growing a big ass beard, Ill post pics later

So? It's just a game and not the type that i just need to have right away. It's not particularly impressive with the implementation of it's technological features either so i don't see a need to buy it at full price. :idont

Beat it.

Best rockstar game and better than Redemption 1, I'm especially surprised at that but I was very satisfied with it.

Did you do all the stranger missions and such as well?

I'm on chapter five but I have taken my sweet time in Chapter 4, and I think I still missed a bunch of stuff.

Here are some thumbnail screenshots I took I dont know how to link to the full versions

Red Dead Redemption 2’s open world isn’t like the open world of Grand Theft Auto where you can get drunk on power with minimal inconvenience or ramifications. Over and over, the game subverts the expectations established by its creators previous games, taking power away from the player.

In the game’s early hours, these former western outlaws plod through snow, constrained to a strict path, prevented by the weather (and the designers) from journeying too far into the world. The player and the outlaw gang share their predicament: they’re in a world full of promise, but they’ve been forced into a confining, tedious and dangerous scenario due to their own actions.

This outlaw gang that should be able to do whatever they’d like have run out of choices. And so have you.

This game is boring and restrictive on purpose to subvert your expectations because it’s a deconstruction of power fantasies. #gamesjournalism

Well it's more realistic than the "bandana"..but I guess that shit doesnt even hide your face anyway.

And if you don't defuse the situation with those cops, they will still suspect you and eventually shoot you I think. I had a similar event happen and even though I didnt change clothes the cop was like " I'm not sure if you did this but my gut tells me you had something to do with this! " and then he tried to arrest me.

Finished the main story. Jesus what a game, what a story and wow Arthur Morgan, a very well written character. Probably the best character Rockstar has ever written. At times it felt like Max Payne, but without all the bullshit lines. His descent and then realization into who he is and what has become of him is so well done.

Will write up some more once I truly finish the game though. There is still a bit left.

Red dead 2 is really good... but I still prefer Witcher.

It’s not as polished, but I just like the subject matter better.

I’m liking red dead, but I really hate how long crafting takes.

I’m still in chapter 2 and it definitely moves pretty slow compared to like a GTA game.

However, I think the missions are, in general, put together a lot better than most games. Like some of the saloon missions nothing really happens, and they are just pure character building, but there’s a lot of effort put into them with the conversations, and being able to talk to basically every character in the bar with different responses.

Finally had a chance to take a deep dive on this while I was home sick yesterday and

1. Holy fuck this game looks amazing on X1X. Especially once I read that it looks better after you turn HDR off (which is weird but works)
2. I'm never going to progress in the goddamn story, at least not for a while. But I am gonna be a fucking master hunter. I'm fucking up all these legendary animals for money.

Is there a pressing need to get a lot of stuff done in Chapter 2 or do a lot of these side things stick around through the whole game?

Basically Rockstar "faked" the HDR by just transplanting SDR into an HDR container which means when the console tries to show the HDR it'll either look the same as SDR, overly bright, or very washed out (depends on your TV). On X1X for me it just looked washed out. Once I turned off HDR the colors immediately popped way more rather than everything being a bit of a brown tint.

This is my new favorite chill out game. On Chapter 6 and taking it real leisurely, doing all the missions I can find (I assume you should hit all the white-colored ones before the yellow ones). I feel like the end is in sight but who knows, considering the nuts-butts non-ending of the first game.

RDR is GTA set in the west, RDR2 is a unique western game. The missions so far in 2 are pretty straightforward but the world itself is a lot more in depth than 1 and really feels like a living and working world.

Also 2 is a prequel if you care about playing in story order.

I was thinking the other week how this political time NEEDS A NEW GTA and that we don’t have one because we live in an era where R* games need 300 million dollars to make a game now and they take five years to make.

What I’m telling you is that this the longest this gta fan has gone without a new gta ever and we aren’t getting one till 2021-22 at best.

Will RDR2 scratch my GTA itch?

This game is in my opinion even better than GTA V so hell fucking yes.

Just expect a slow, methodical intro to everything. And set up the controls differently ( standard fps type, 0 deadzone, free aim ).

And take it slow, take in the amazing world.
