No, Sunday is at the arena so that's just watching the games. Friday and Saturday are the only con days.

Melee takes like four goddamn hours to run top 8, so there's no where else to put it in the schedule.

At least they are starting GG later than normal. The first final used to start at 7am and there were no assigned seats so we'd show up early and just fall asleep across a row of chairs to save seats for people.

If you're going to the Pinball Hall of Fame, make sure and talk to the guy who runs it, Tim Arnold. He LIVES to talk about these games.

Also, look for a game called Pinball Circus. There are two of them in the world. I've only seen pics but it is really special.

I mean I play fighting games. If your average Street Fighter round is < 60 seconds then,

top 8 = 4 matches -> 2 matches -> 1 match = 7 matches total.

Even if you're doing like BEST 5 of 7 rounds for a match, that's maximum 7 minutes per match and most will come under that so probably average 4-5 mins per match x 7 matches total = 30-40 mins for the top 8. Yet, it gets scheduled for like 2.5 hours. I don't understand how this is possible. And 4 fucking hours of smash for 8 players to fight each other?

howwwwwww. This is going from "hey, this is interesting to watch 30 mins of top players fight" to "this will be like watching paint dry for 4 hours".

You haven't ever watched Evo on Twitch before? There's some setup before/after every match, and they build in time for a bracket reset too. Otherwise, not sure where the rest of the time comes from.

I don't really get Evo.

Melee matches can go up to 8min each and they are all 3 out of 5, plus the possibility of a bracket reset in grand finals. Though DBFZ matches from the research I have done locally are 9-13 mins each, so I think that's the longest game.

Basically everything is scheduled assuming it takes near the longest possible time. Plus build in time for ad breaks (SFV is going to be on ESPN so that's a LOT of ad breaks), equipment swapping between games, getting people on and off the stage, award ceremonies at the end, and time for the companies to make an announcement regarding the games after top 8 (trailers, future DLC announcement, etc) and stuff tends to add up.

EVO has gotten a lot better with the time scheduling now. They used to just schedule two hours for Melee even though it's always taken longer than that and then everything would be "behind schedule". Now they schedule nearly the longest possible time even if they don't think it will last that long.

Also being there in person does add something to it. I would have never thought I'd give a flying fuck about Blazblue whatever or Smash games and then EVO finals had me on my feet screaming for people I never heard of to get a last hit in.

I think you'll end up liking it more than you think.

Hmm normally this would annoy me (since I'd plan to go straight to the pool party right from Melee GF) but since I'll be staying at the Luxor anyways it won't be a biggie.

With a bookie, yes but only off strip. Socially, there will be a ton of side bets going on at the arena though you may need to move closer to the front to get in on it. I've paid for a decent portion of my trip like that most years.

You probably weren't serious, but there really is a ton of side betting going on for every match.
