CinemaSins is the worst. They're partially responsible for the negative moviegoing culture that we have now.

I do agree with this a little bit. The internet, Youtube especially, is rife with people picking over every tiny detail of movies to point out all the things it did "wrong" instead of watching a movie and just enjoying it or not enjoying it based on the product as a whole. Feels like it has bred a generation of cynics.

I watched a few CinemaSins stuff and it's for sure not for me, obviously a ton of the sins are played for comedy but I don't think they're all that funny. That being said there's a lot of people doing much better movie commentary,  RLM for actual good comedy, Alachia Queen for a more human opinion, GoodBadFlicks for more factual, short movie exploration, Lindsay Ellis does some great in-depth stuff, Looper does a lot of good content etc. I rarely see that dumb CinemaSins style in my recommends except for maybe the occasional honest trailer garbage.

Honest Trailers was a decent gimmick that they kinda ran into the ground and the jokes got more tired, hacky and rushed as they tried to be timely and prolific with them. A lot of them started to get put out to match fan requests rather than having the material first. The game ones were almost like that entirely from the start.

Nazis have invaded a ton of spaces and they're most prevalent on chan boards and reddit. They've entered gaming forums and multiplayer gaming et al because it's easy to convert young people. So many people kept trying to explain this and no one wanted to listen for the longest time.

Yep. anyone who followed the GamerGate stuff predicted this. Nazis were already moving into that movement, many GGers welcomed them with open arms because they shared a single enemy, women and feminism. Plenty of conservatives and right wing politicians saw GG as a way to get their interest too, because again they all shared the same enemy. It's why plenty of GGers are also Trump supporters.

It's all been connected and no one would listen to those who watched the movement closely.

You can look far back in the 4chan's history and see the demographic shift over the years. I know many who used to frequent it and stopped doing that when it starting to get more and more exclusionary and starting going from funny interesting memes to chan ops that try to distort information and hurt people.

And one of the easiest ways to push an agenda is through comedy. Them seeing the racism and laughing it off like it was a joke only helped to normalize it. It's one of the ways in how this kind of stuff starts. It's why even people like Jimmy Fallon is called out the way he is for normalizing Trump the way he did (and Jimmy Fallon still doesn't get why people had an issue with it)

Many people studying right-wing internet discourse have come to the (rather obvious) conclusion that Gamergate was basically ground zero for what we now call the alt-right, so this isn't a surprising thing to hear.

It makes it super hard to be a parent today. My son is 7 and is starting to want to play more games like Roblox or Minecraft.

I've gone and locked his iPad and Apple ID (he has a child account linked to mine) as much as I can but I'm always worried that it isn't enough.

So ultimately it comes down to whether the gaming community are actually willing to stay away from playing games with toxic communities rather than just complain about them. Everyone who plays games like CS:GO and CoD are facilitating this problem by financially backing companies to provide a wild west for impressionable youth to be preyed upon without taking any sort of responsibility for what happens within.

This is probably the main problem I have with PC gaming. Steam is a platform that refuses to censor or control messaging in people's screennames or avatars. I'll load up a game of Rocket League and get a heap of white supremacist or the_donald memes thrown in my face. It definitely makes me consider how a more restrictive and controlled console could be more appealing for a parent.

You just have to look at how nazi-like rhetoric has invaded gaming space with claims of censorship in games, demanding the removal of women and minorities, demands of free speech which are never about free speech, not wanting politics in their games, their call outs against the media. And those like Boogie who remain "neutral" who only help these people maintain their platform and momentum. Or H3H3 who has started catering to these kinds of people. Jon 'gene pool' Jafari who got his statistics from a literal white supremacist site and people siding and defending him. PewDiePie and his Nazi stuff. Chris Ray Gun defending Milo's pedophilia and being a general piece of shit who does his best to ruin discourse on legit problems. And all of them who have either been on a vodcast or have communicated with Sargon of Akkad who is a useful tool to neo-nazis.

Those are big name influencers. And that's not even the tip of the iceberg.

i had to deal with this with my ten year old cousin. he loves pdp, quotes him all the time. that’s how young they can hook them in. it’s grooming, plain and simple.

Not surprised at all. I followed the GamerGate movement closely a couple years ago and was exactly this, using the ethics in game journo as a bullshit facade.
