Really enjoyed Horizon and liked Alloy as a lead a lot.
But maybe it's just me, but there seems to be plenty of female games this gen and last. And multiplayer games seem to give equal attention and representation to the female characters. Sure there's plenty to progress and improve on, but I don't think it's actually that bad.
It's this strange thing where they have to erase past successes in order to prop up the new one. So many talking about how amazing it is to have a female led AAA franchise, completely forgetting about Lara Croft.
It's very similar to what you see on ResetEra and elsewhere with regards to hype for films or videogames. Everything has to be the best ever, revolutionary, ground breaking, have to have the highest Metacritic / Rotten Tomatoes score, the biggest box office / revenue, etc... With little to no historical perspective because every other film is trying to sell those grand marketing claims every couple of months now.
I imagine it's nothing new, we are all susceptible to the idea that we're living the greatest time there is and that our taste is the gold standard forever and ever. Internet has probably heightened this. And it's a problem because it reinforces tunnel vision and feed a vicious circles where attention is increasingly monopolized in the hands of the company that can conduct those marketing blitzes.
