They are all archived online, reading late 80’s/early 90‘s vidya mags is amazing.

There's a bunch of foreign language ones up on here for our foreign friends, also UK/AUS, US is hit or miss as they get taken down sometimes, GameFan is watched pretty close by Dave:
https://archive.org/details/gamemagazines

A few weeks ago I was looking at some German PC magazine that had fucking pie charts for their review scores lol, so German.

edit: looks like GameFan's still up, https://archive.org/search.php?query=gamefan

if it gets put into a collection and listed with the rest Dave Halverson copyright strikes it

This UK magazine (featuring Gary Whitta) is amusing, they scored games out of 1000.

A young Frank O'Connor's lurking around some of these too.

Never heard of it, the big ones for PC stuff were PC Games and Gamestar. They are still around, and IIRC still doing print.

Maniac and Video Games were the most popular console focused magazines.

STRAIGHT FROM 1984 COMES:

TOO MUCH GAMING POWER FOR MOST EYES

They only spent $2500 on this. That's ~$6700 today. Even the two "power user" suggestions they make for replacement parts, especially the monitor, only add like $500. I was hoping for like a Maximum PC, WE BROKE THE BANK, type build. They actually went for the cheaper Atari 400 here over the newer 800 because it could be customized more but like wtf no wonder your magazine went under a year later. PEOPLE WANT TO DREAM!

I liked the Deathtrap Dungeon ad back in the day. Don't know what the game was like and never hear anyone talk about it... but damn that dom chick turned me on.

I believe it's like a bad dungeon crawler sans loot with bad original Tomb Raider type controls and camera. It's on Steam/GOG and often on sale for a buck or so. It originally was supposed to be more complex but it kept getting cut down. Like the woman in the game wears barely anything but originally it was supposed to be because you'd pick up armor and stuff which would show on your character. But they had to drop that whole mechanic.

I should collect all those Nintendo FACT CHECK Ads in one post. There's four or five of them total, all about how the Genesis is basically a toxic sludge dump of 64 colors while the SNES is gonna rotate your face off with tons of colors and hot game programming. Plus I love ads that try to look like articles in the magazine. (I should also see if I can collect the letters written in attacking the magazines for the ads who then have to explain how they're Nintendo ads.) Ubisoft did this later, around the 360 era, and they were more informative about the games than some of the magazines they were in.

This isn't what I wanted, but... FACT CHECK:

There's a version where they're like next generation hardware? FUCK YOU, WE'VE GOT THE SUPER FX 2 CHIP, WE'VE GOT DONKEY KONG COUNTRY, 3DO MORE LIKE 3DNO. And it shows a bunch of games that never came out like FX Fighter. I am now determined to find it.

They put this ad out in the same month that the Saturn released early.

Reading through some old German vidya magazines.

People were mad about YET ANOTHER cute platformer being released in Yoshi‘s Island. The people don’t want anyone to play or buy these games because it‘s exactly what (((they)9) want. The people want more mature games like Voyeur for CD-I or PO‘d for 3DO.

POed was pretty good. Not Yoshi's Island good, but still.

From what I remember, a lot of people were down on Yoshi's Island back in the day. The graphic style compared to DKC or the digitized games popular at the time. The more linear nature of the worlds instead of the more exploratory SMW. The whining baby Mario. The whole "Nintendo is teh kiddie!" meme that was starting to kick into high gear around this time. All of those were working against the game's favor.

There's always been that story that the game looked more like the first Super Mario World until Nintendo told Miyamoto to use Rendered Graphics™ and he instead came back with its more distinctive look.

It’s like these reviewers didn’t even know that Yoshi’s Island was powered by the FX2 chip; capable of manipulating more polygons, more texture mapped surfaces, and more sprites. The RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer) chip can even calculate pixel-by-pixel terrain maps on-the-fly (as seen in Nintendo’s upcoming title Commanche) to create more dramatic 3D effects than were possible on the original version of the Super FX.
