I actually have your opposite experience - I have friends and my family has always treated me well. I haven't gotten bullied since 7th grade.
That being said, Im pretty depressed and think of what life would be like after I kill myself.

One of my favorite documentaries explored this disconnect. It interviewed some WWII-era socialists and their generational rift with the hippies of the late 60's. They were embarrassed by them because they didn't want to work for a living. Then those (of that Woodstock generation) went into the workforce and bargained away the rights of future members for more compensation for themselves. Effectively diminishing any leverage those workers would have in the future.

Not sure if I totally agree with the latter point, but it opened my eyes to the idea that the socialists of that generation weren't happy with how future generations carried on the mantle. It's not something I ever thought about.
