Yaoi in the community I’m in is more ambiguous and relates both with the actual definition and Shounen-ai. As for women roles, Yuri would be what you look for (again in the terms of mainly non-sexual romantic-centric content). I’m not into Yuri much due to my orientation and interests, but if people enjoy them I will not stop them. Are there problems in both, yup more than certain.

I do want to admit I have some bias leaning towards yaoi due to my orientation being for men and much less for women. Even if a yuri anime had a great plot and had great characters, I still couldn’t relate myself with what they’re feeling. Which I can perfectly understand why people who have romantic feelings for women would enjoy such. Think of someone who’s asexual watching an ecchi anime, that’s sort of how I feel about yuri.


Though yeah, regarding if yaoi is referring to the NSFW content or not, this thread mainly covers the general SFW spectrum of BL and GL.


And I guess this is a pretty large generalization, but it feels like RE has less gay members compared to hetero/lesbian/bisexual members.

I mean isn’t a lot of the yuri out there cishet guys who draw those ships because they don’t wanna see any sort of guy because apparently men aren’t as comfortable with being more lovey with other guys? Like a lot of the yuri is sexually charged for that male gaze. Which it’s got the same issue with Yaoi in regards to sexually charged content; though from my experience a lot of the Yaoi written out there are created for women being more story and character focused.


More or less, I’d say be more open about watching Yaoi because of the little Yaoi being created is pretty well done, in comparison to the ubiquity of yuri. Like, you’d see more people shipping Lucina and Female Corrin than you do with shipping Male Corrin and Xavier, as an example of this imbalance.

I guess that’s the main problem I have with yuri. It’s just really dull and boring to watch and just disinterests me overall.

I mentioned this before, but I think a big reason why is that I can’t really sympathize or relate with any main character in a yuri. Sure the story can be great and all, along with characters being developed, but I just feel kind of off watching characters I can’t relate to in any way. Again sort of how an asexual person feels about ecchi anime.

I mean at least on this forum we've definitely had arguments about this based on some draft scripts which I believe were more emphasizing of the 'joker isn't getting laid' plot points. Hardly surprising that the movie isn't as bad, as rarely are draft scripts reflective of the final product, but instead we get a movie that traffics in mature subject matter without introducing mature themes -- and has had to bear the brunt of multiple missteps that can be laid solely at the feet of the director, this choice included.
