I mean... civilisation didn't collapse when the proles got their unsavory tastes catered to with the printing press and their penny dreadfuls, it didn't collapse when the proles got their unsavory tastes catered to with their pirate radio stations, and it didn't collapse when the proles got their unsavory tastes catered to with their video nasties and VHS tapes, but trust me, YouTube is going to collapse civilisation by catering to the proles and their unsavory tastes.

They can say "I don't agree with this!!!" all they like, it's a letter addressing international politics so it's literally a message from America to Europe

But sure let's narrow it down further, let's have boring headlines that mean nothing to anyone saying "Federica Mogherini receives letter from Ellen Lord and Andrea Thompson," that way no one from any group is implicated in anything

Also is the post I linked equating Castro to Hitler ? Is he mistaking them ? Does he not see how tenuous the image similarity is beyond fairly common frame composition if that -elevation angle doesn't match- ("there's one flag in the macroblocking there, it's almost like a Communist Rally").

So many questions I do not have the good faith to explore further.

I feel that is a fool errand to watch game of thrones and expect the female empowerment angle played straight.

Quote from: SweetNicole
Just to clarify: There's all sorts of examples of where it makes sense to cover only one side of a debate when the other side is not grounded on facts. While I don't think that is the case of the Epic Game Store, it is the case for many topics in the world where it makes no sense to cover both sides of the "debate." There is no journalism ethics being broken when that happens. You don't, for example, see WaPo or NTY giving equal time to anti-vax movement as they do vaccines because there isn't really a "debate" there, only one side there is grounded in science and fact and it isn't the anti-vax movement.
I don't understand why you feel that this needs to be said here. You said it yourself, this is not the case for the Epic Store. So why make this sort of argument in the first place? What's the point in using such extreme examples like anti-vaxxers, or that other poster that used holocaust denial as an example?

Is this an inflammatory false equivalence, disingenuously made in bad faith?

It's still amazing that their whole "don't vilify the media" only applies to gaming sites.

Edit:

Damn Durante is laying into them

Quote
Pretending not to see the forest for the trees or facing repercussions is not "cultivating healthy discussion". It's cultivating thought-crime, and pushing everyone not willing to participate in that theater away from your forum.

I've authored a dozen or so articles for PC gamer. I enjoy working with people there. But pretending that their reporting on and editorial stance regarding anything EGS-related has been even remotely unbiased is exactly that -- pretending.

There's a post where this has already been addressed, by me, in this thread, but you keep doing you.
why does she give a shit about epic games store, just because her mentally ill friend hates SteamGAF/Era?

Quote from: SweetNicole
You are comparing not being allowed to push conspiracy theories to a thought-crime. I hope you realize how absurd this leap in logic is. ResetEra has a moderation standard that they behold themselves to in order to ensure healthy discussion. For example, bigotry is banned from this forum. That does not mean that not allowing someone to post bigoted statements is a thought crime. You're still free to have bigoted thoughts, but they aren't welcome nor accepted here.

What you have done is suggest that PC Gamer's coverage is pro-biased because they are receiving funding from Epic for that coverage which is incredibly inflammatory. This is not the same as saying that PC Gamer has a pro-Epic PoV or bias in its coverage. I hope you can see and understand the difference.

These are the examples you asked for

Childish noises, unconstructive tantruming

Conspiracy theories

Crypto-racist dogwhistling about a Chinese company

Needless suspicion and interrogation cast on an official rep of Rebellion Developments who literally just said their game is still coming to Steam.

I am not brushing aside legitimate concerns with business practices by Epic external to this sponsorship. I am talking about very obviously childish noisemaking that happens in every EGS thread to date. I have also voiced a ton of concern about the signal to noise ratio on gaming side over the course of the last year and by the largest visible margins the worst offender of that is the EGS discussion. I wish it were a better discussion. I wish it would actually be about interesting conversations on the widening horizons of PC marketplaces and whether or not this grows the pie or just segments it. But it's not. It's a lot of people saying 'NO I DON'T LIKE IT' and bleating like wounded animals whenever their appalling behavior is called out for what it is.

I'm a self-declared progressive that has amassed a collection of over 2500+ games supporting a company that also shamelessly sells toxic shit called "FEMINAZI: The Triggering".
Oh yeah? Well, I own Make America Great Again and Make America Great Again: The Trump Presidency on Steam. :smug

you're enough of a dork to create a topic on the internet to reach a consensus if you're racist or not. your ten year old daughter got under your skin enough to make you create a topic on the internet to decide if her calling you a nerd is 'derogatory'

she won

Quote from: Sweet Nicole
I want to say that this is a rational and logical point of view that, yes, makes sense. I would absolutely agree with you that media outlets can be influenced by not wanting to lose out on future contracts with an important sponsor. We've seen similar things in that past around media reporting such as Bethesda not sending review copies or responding to Kotaku after their negative coverage or even historically when Jeff Gerstmann was fired from Gamespot. Advertisements are the lifeblood of many journalism websites, and negative coverage has been know to lead to threats of pulling ads, restricted access, etc.

I think that what your previous post indicated that there was some form of cash payment or money being exchanged under the table when you said they were "bought by Epic," which is where my concern stemmed from because that would be a conspiracy theory. I do think it is rational to think that they may have not gone after Epic Games Store negatively out of financial concerns, but, like you said, I don't think there was any sort of implicit or explicit deal between PC Gamer and Epic. Thanks for clearing up your perspective on your original post; I don't have any qualms with your point of view here.

I love how she realizes that bullying durante isn't going to work so she tries to pretend that she agrees with him now. Or, maybe she really is this dumb.
In her defense, she is pretty dumb.

Era, you should all get yourselves sterilised as a precautionary measure to not getting owned by 10 year old girls in hypothetical future discussions

Imagine being on a forum where conversation is so stifled that you are now incapable of successfully debating a 10 year old girl.

no, nerd culture became mainstream over the past decade
Yes, that is where I am at (unless you are a anime fan, which I don't think has hit mainstream yet, doing my part at least!).
