Video games, like the war it's vast majority of movies and TV shows, are dumb entertainment. I read more of that Medium article than was warranted by his writing. Him saying "these games are actually dumb, unlike the games I make," is dumb, and RE getting upset that he called Last of Us dumb is dumb, because all games are dumb.
Can games make you feel things? Sure. BotW is my favorite game because of the feeling of exploration. And some games make me care about the characters. So since they can make you feel things, does that mean they're "art"? Depends on your definition, but I guess.
But who cares. Because do games deserve respect? No. By far the biggest impact they will have on your life will be the time they use up. Life enrichment coming from games is nonsense, with maybe an odd exception here or there for some individual.
Just remember what your typical game dev is like, and then ask yourself, do they really have something to say that would enrich my life?
