PlayStation’s next-generation console ticks all those boxes, starting with an AMD chip at the heart of the device. (Warning: some alphabet soup follows.) The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments. While ray tracing is a staple of Hollywood visual effects and is beginning to worm its way into $10,000 high-end processors, no game console has been able to manage it.

Neat.

I can see myself not bothering, but will likely inevitably end up with one if that's where people are going for fighting games and whatnot.  Just don't care much for SJW Sony and their first-party offerings these days.

Same. Between PS1-3 and psp I have over 200 PlayStation games. It is my bread and butter.

I have almost no interest in 5. 4 was my least played PlayStation ever. Sell me on it Sony.

That was my question. Isn't ray tracing very resource intensive even on PC? I guess maybe it could be easier if they are just shooting for 30fps on everything.

It's a console. 30FPS targeting is du jour for them.

It supporting Ray Tracing seems like a bit of a pipe dream, no?
If they force it through compute (as Nvidia now allows on 10-series cards), then yeah. Especially if they're going to push 4K again.
Navi may have custom silicon for the job though, same as RTX cards have, so who knows?

I mean, ray-traced global illumination at 4K is not going to happen, sure. Maybe AO or reflections though.

Not quite upscaled, but yes, on the majority of titles. One X is legit 4K most times though. Would be weird for either of them to abandon it now.

They'll probably allow for certain modes again (4K30, 1080p60), but I don't see them allowing people to toggle ray-traced features on and off. But ray-traced anything at 4K is going to have a hefty performance impact, so...

if it wasn't for running fighting games locally, i still wouldn't own a ps4 so i'm not sure if i'll bother with this thing. i'm still impressed by the X1X stuff, especially Forza Horizon and Tomb Raider so "more graphics" isn't as compelling. i do like the idea of full ps4 back compat...i wonder if that will apply to controllers/arcade sticks too?

probably helps that i have game pass until next year and a "decent" pc that can run shit at high settings.

Personally, if I were to go PC , it would have to exceed what the current round of consoles can dish.   Otherwise, it's not worth the time/price to get one that matches a console, imo.  I see PC's as needing to be superior to consoles, if you got the cheddar.  :)

makes sense, i'm trying to remember but i think i spent about $850 on mine when i made it and it still does pretty well compared to a ps4/xbone but i also don't have a 4K monitor (i guess i have a 4k tv but i'm not bringing my pc out there) but i can run over 60fps in any game so it's a tradeoff

just thinking, some of this sounds pretty fishy but i guess it's just a big marketing article anyway. what drive are they using that's faster than anything on PC? M2 drives and Macs soldering RAM on as a storage solution is fast as hell. Plus the storage will have to be huge if everything is 4K.

I feel like the SSD faster than PC is just some bogus marketing that won’t be true in reality... like it’s technically connected to a faster bus, but can’t deliver that real world because that bandwidth is shared between everything.

I’m not sure when I’ll jump into next gen. I feel like I went next gen too early this time, and it’s best to wait until you get through two holiday seasons or something like that. First year was such a joke on PS4 and Xbox One. I built a PC with a 970 in 2015 that smoked both base versions of the console and played everything on that until I got an X and Pro.

I feel like I might go the same route and use 2020 as a good time to upgrade my PC to something more powerful than the consoles.

If it is indeed BC to PS4 (at least), it's inevitable for me to get one, as 99.9% of my PS4 library is digital.   Hell, I would get a disc-less system, if they introduced that sku at launch.

The PS4 library has far surpassed the godawful PS3 offering, but I hate the hardware. PS4 Slim is slightly less offensive, but it's still super loud and heats up way too quickly. Also there's way too little space on it. I.e. if PS5 is an improvement, I'll get one to keep playing my PS4 games in Pro Mode, regardless of next-gen exclusives. I'm still wishing for BC going beyond 4, but I'm not holding my breath.

I play 90% of my games on PC, so i'll probably get it 1 year or so in, for the exclusives, like i usually do.
Specs are alright, the usual jump you'd expect from a new console, tbh.

They probably wanted to get something out to counter Google Stadia and beat Xbox to the punch.

Microsoft might pull a fast one and roll out XBOX 2 this year with a half baked Call of Duty port, upscaled Anthem and Halo Infinite Gear5 in North America.
But with Forza skipping this year and the X finally picking up steam last holiday it seems unlikely the Xbox 2 will release that early.

720p Ray-traced 8k checkerboard fake-HDR era here we come!

The higher SSD speeds come from the new PCIE4.0 standard that the new Ryzen's will support.
We will know by mid 2019 just how much of a bust AMD's latest CPU outing is and what sort of discount Sony can expect or if the next generation will run on a decent CPU.

Sony would have to come up with their own lower cost ray tracing implementation since I doubt that (what I assume to be) a Ryzen/Navi based APU can be as powerful as NVIDIA's current RTX lineup that requires a shitton more power than an entire PS4 to operate and still struggles doing 4K or even 1440p and RT

I guess maybe the Ryzen CPU is at least a desktop grade cpu rather than like a years old netbook cpu.

That should help a lot.

Did not consider it could be an APU. Though I think I read somewhere that I’m theory an APU could be faster than dedicated components because they can send data back and forth more quickly

It’s seem pretty obvious that dedicated gaming hardware outperforms a similarly specced  gaming PC.

Not jumping on a console on D1, when it has 0 worthwhile games, and likely faulty hardware, isn't "hating".
Besides, what they do or don't do in relation to Microsoft, isn't relevant on whether or not their machine is good.  :doge

So with PS4 being an AMD box and PS5 being one, will PS4 BC actually work like it should this time around? I was told that was the 2nd best benefit of going off custom hardware for Sony, 1st best was developers not having to deal with custom hardware.

Nah, some people got noisy fans but PS4 has been a pretty damn stable system. Smooth OS, games run pretty good, store works functional, region free, etc...I'm more than happy with the PS4 and PS4 Pro and after Astrobot with PSVR. Definitely will be there Day 1 for PS5.

It’s gonna depend on the games, we’ll see I guess. The CPU increase makes it pretty interesting even if the GPU situation is still up in the air. Should be a pretty solid upgrade, worth it if BC/upscales. Assuming they don’t stratify a “pro” machine from the jump.

Can also see the Pro and X making it easier to be a late adopter. That’s the hope anyway.

Yeah that's true. Also had sticking R1 buttons that you could fix by pulling the tab out and cleaning it a bit. Not huge deals but annoying. I feel like my Switch has more issues than launch PS4 did (hopefully the Switch upgrades fix stuff), though nothing compares to the X360 obviously. Xbox One's were all rock solid though, right? I never bought one but never heard anything bad about the hardware.
