BT what is that "water" thing about?

Its just different points on the Ying Yang that you point too and it gives you different definitions for each Element. I just put it there cause I think it looks nice :D and the keeping it on an element gives the desktop a sense of personalization.

Drinky: That was a bad effort.

So when are the Vista police gonna bust down BT's door and kill everyone inside?

:lol

I think I'm good for the next 30 days though, trial mode ftw...shit will lock me out though...at the end

Yes, I'm so bitter because I didn't waste $300 on the latest version of Windows. That's even dumber than buying a PS3 at launch with no games. WOW SOLITAIRE WITH AERO.

IE7 still has frustrating bugs (quirks?) that no one really cares about since the majority of people will still need to make their sites work in it anyway.  I question its ultimate security over Firefox however, which is a major issue.  Firefox is no champ though, its memory leaking and the random buggyness (in the actual app, ie outside of the rendering engine) many folks experience is a real and valid concern as well.  Basically, there is no good browser (Opera blows in its own ways, so don't give me that), especially for the Mac.

Desktop objects/widgets have always been kinda useless for me. i'm using Konfabulator (okay, Yahoo! Widget Engine) in XP now, and aside from a widget that locates the cheapest gas in town, a couple of eBay widgets, and maybe a weather widget, the other widgets are either superfluous or just handled with other apps, namely Firefox. i really don't care to make my desktop a piece of art because it's either a)covered in windows or b)hidden because my monitor blanks and eventually cuts off after an hour of disuse. No one is around to see my painting of Marilyn Monroe pleasuring herself as wildlife watches anyways, so fuck it.

Oh, and IE had extensions years before Firefox was even a twinkle in a developer's eye. They're called add-ins. i forgot all about those until i read some anti-Firefoxisawsome article.

Now if this Vista torrent would just hurry up...

APF: If it's one thing I'll admit about Firefox, it's that the memory leaking problems need to be addressed, and soon. I did some tweaking in about:config though and it usually doesn't hog much memory now, but it can still get out of hand. Joe User doesn't like to do tweaking, though. Firefox devs need to understand this.

Vista is getting great reviews, but almost every great review is recommending people wait for their next PC upgrade. Of course they are speaking to the demographic that purchases the factory made PCs. My PC is built from various parts and fairly powerful, so that recommendation isnt really targeted at me. I BELIEVE MS plans to support and release copies of Windows XP w/SP2 for at least another year, so they are aware a lot of people wont jump on board RIGHT away due in part to the relatively steep hardware requirements.

I'm interested in Vista, since I love Windows, and I'm fine with Windows but I haven't kept up with Vista or it's features. People complained about XP all the time and I had no problems with it. I had ME and it froze on me like every minute, but XP was fast and perfection.

lol Linux distinguished mentally-challenged fellows maybe. Ironically, an Ubuntu live CD has been the most stable way for me to use my computer as my XP install is hosed. Now if you'll excuse me, i've got to get Vista. Built in torrent handling via the official BT client is pretty snazzy.

Oh I have. I actually used an eMac for a while but the performance on it was ass and couldn't take it anymore (thats when I built out the PC I have now). I loved using OSX and the widgets...I actually would love if Vista used the mouse gesture that allows you to move to the upper right of the desktop and brings your widgets to the front (like in OSX).

Specs

Code: [Select]
CPU: 1.8GHz AMD64 Athlon 3000+ (Venice) (Single Core)
RAM: 1.5GB
HDD: 80GB for Vista
Video Card: XFX 6600GT 128Bit NVIDIA
Sound: Turtle Beach Montego DDL

3.7 is Moderate to Mid-High in accordance to how the scoring system is for this Performance Advisor. I would say the PC with the specs you posted about would be absolute baseline. Even then, you could turn off the Aero effect and go into classic UI mode and could get away with a lower end system.

Yeah already did that TVC it says they can run Vista and they keep going on about the security and how pretty it looks. But its really coming down to them thinking that with Readyboost it acts like psychical ram which to my understanding it doesn't equal. So they think they can use the 512mb of ram to share with in bedded graphics if they get 2gb flash drive.

Thank you blue thats exactly what i was looking for. Now to get them to buy a new pc instead.

For the record, programs that HAVE to handle a large portion of their own memory management (like Photoshop) won't see any boost with Readyboost since they have to build their own sandbox on every launch anyway.  Well, I'm sure the next version will support it, since it's a much-hyped feature.

I have 4.0 cause my proc is only 2.0 ghz, but its 64 bit so f em alllll!

The basic argument even from the positive reviews that people should wait is based on the fact that Vista costs THE SAME as XP installs did on factory PCs, while alone ultimate costs a bit. Most factory pcs will not ship with ultimate, obviously. However it is a pretty sane argument. if youre gonna upgrade ANYWAY....

Yeah i was very interested in Readyboost myself but then i told my grandfather about it and since he installed that damn Windows program and it said he could run it he's been all gun hoe about getting vista. Especially cause of all the security thats built in unlike XP.

I hope as flash prices continue to drop that its used in the integral workings of the pc as sort of a third option for data. Especially for cache and other such things where it'd be faster and easier to right to that media than say HDD. At least i'm hoping that we'll see that divergence from normal hierarchy of ram and hdd usage.

Oh i know they are coming its just taking its sweet ass time. I really dont want to upgrade till my next laptop has flash drive technology in it. For the simple fact that it's easier on the battery and if all i do is web browse or do stuff in word. It shouldnt be using the hungry power eating HDD.

But your right we need a substantial amount of space. Enough for programs and the OS to be on. 20-40gb range sounds good enough to me. I just wont be happy till its readily used though. Its a small step in the future I hope.

Well hot damn kids, Ritek just announced that their take on the Solid State Disk (SSD) will begin shipment this year. Impressive enough seeing as how only Samsung (and perhaps TDK) can pull this off currently. But what if we told you that they'll cost your friendly OEM a mere $169 to slip 16GB of that cool RiDATA flash into your swank new laptop? That's right, just $169 for a 1.8-inch 16GB SSD or $199 for the 2.5-inch version. They'll also offer 32GB SSDs at launch (64GB near the end of the year) which we can only assume will be less than twice the cost of the 16GB version when purchased in bulk. That's damn cheap, and likely far less than the $600 premium already quoted for the 1.8-inch 32GB SSD from SanDisk. When? Q2, that's when. Can you wait?

Oh yes, flash hard drives are starting to get cheaper and bigger. It only mean good things!

The problem with the Riteks is that they use a cheaper flash memory (no surprise). After a short number of writes (something like 10,000 IIRC), you've reached the lifetime duty cycle of the card. i've skimmed how ReadyBoost works, and i assume it reaches some happy medium between performance boosting and minimize writes to the flash drive. Those drives aren't meant to handle the types of writes that a virtual memory scheme would place on them.

But yeah, we're on our way to using flash for storage. Didn't Fujitsu or Panny release a laptop with a 32GB flash hard drive a while back?
