CHANDLER, AZ — Parents who don't want their kids to be forced to wear a mask are looking for schools where mask-wearing is an option. Such is the case for Christy Raban, who tells ABC15 she felt like she was part of the "minority" when it came to her children having to wear a mask when they go back to in-person learning.

Raban and about 1,400 other parents are part of a social media group called 'Mask-free Schooling options' that looks for schools where mask-wearing isn't enforced.

"It's the fact that they need to go back to school in person and of course, not be wearing masks," says Raban.

Raban pulled her kids from Fulton Elementary and San Tan Junior High a few weeks ago, after Chandler Unified School District announced teachers and students would be wearing a mask while attending school. She searched school options and went with American Leadership Academy- Gilbert North primarily because of the flexibility on wearing masks.

"They are adamant about if a child wants to wear a mask, that child will be supported and if a child doesn't, they will be too...I'm looking forward to the change, having my kids there," added Raban.

Dr.Rachel Deathrage is a pediatrician who participated in a back-to-school online town hall session on ABC15's Facebook page. She took part in a re-opening task force for a Phoenix school district. During the town hall, Dr. Deathrage said masking is one of the key factors in containing the spread and advised the district that if they went back to school, students and teachers should be wearing masks.

"I know there are a lot of people who are fearful about who should be masking. I just want to reassure everyone that... the CDC already has guidelines that those under 2 shouldn't and those who physically can't remove a mask," said Dr. Deathrage.

ABC15 reached out to the American Leadership Academy to clarify whether they will make mask-wearing an option, given Governor Ducey's Executive Order where he states that schools both public and charter, should have mask-wearing mandates for in-person schooling.

In a statement, the charter school said, "It is not ALA’s intent to mandate a mask policy. However, if on August 17, we are required by law to enforce wearing masks, we will follow the law...we believe that parents are best equipped to make these decisions for the students."

After this statement was issued, we reached out to the ALA once again, asking if the executive order's language serves as the "law." ABC15 did not hear back from the ALA.

There's some researchers who are looking why Asia seems to be doing relatively better, specifically at Vietnam right now and they seem to think past experiences with SARS-COV-1 and MERS helped the population produce enough resistance via T-cells to recognize SARS-COV-2 to blunt the most serious effects.

Which goes to show that the world needs to be way more proactive in developing vaccines and treatments to diseases and viruses that they think they contained and die off.

The idea of generalised immunity was “an entirely reasonable hypothesis,” but as yet there was no evidence that it was behind Vietnam’s ability to fight the virus, Prof Thwaites said.

“It’s a potential idea and it’s something that we can work on. We’ve done work on coronaviruses before. We have the ability to test that hypothesis quite easily and we will do.”

Scientists in Singapore which, like Vietnam, was badly hit by Sudden Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003, are already actively exploring the concept.

“The possibility that in some rural areas there is a higher level of pre-existing immunity is something that we are actively studying,” Professor Antonio Bertoletti, a specialist in infectious diseases at the Duke-NUS Medical School, told The Telegraph.

Prof Bertoletti led a research team that recently uncovered the presence of virus-specific T cell immunity in people who recovered from COVID-19 and SARS, as well as some healthy study subjects who had never been infected by either virus.

T cells, along with antibodies, are an integral part of the human immune response against viral infections due to their ability to directly target and kill infected cells.

It was a given that SARS and MERS vaccine projects were going to get dropped pretty quick given how small, short, and not really spreading outside the outbreak zone those were.

This stuff costs hundreds of millions to develop and test - so carrying on just off the chance that it may end up useful 10 years later for a related virus is never going to happen.
That's not even then taking into account the costs for production, distribution, etc. Not to mention that likewise, people likely won't queue up to get vaccinated for a virus that was a blip on the radar just in case a similar one that spreads more might show up later.

From June 5 to 30, the study found 1.1 per cent of the samples were positive for COVID-19 antibodies.

After removing some deaths from the total, I calculate an IFR of ~1.7-1.8%. It's probably that high because this hit long term care homes hard and most of the cases occurred early in the pandemic before treatment options improved.

I assume this was for yesterday. Spain had 3,044 new cases yesterday, which would be the equivalent of 21k at the States' population. France had +556 new cases, but +2,820 the day before. Canada's doing much better, but the numbers are probably down because we just had a long weekend (I think a number of provinces weren't even reporting).

I'm on Warfarin due to my mechanical heart valve so I'm already at an increased risk of clots. I'm finally back to running (4 miles yesterday!) after being sidelined a few years so I'd rather not fuck things up. But yes, I'm old.

Mitch Daniels, former governor of Indiana, current president of Purdue University, went on TV to argue HARD that colleges must reopen, and it would be criminal negligence to NOT reopen them, because the virus doesn't spread on college campuses and the studies show it is safe. When the obvious question, "How can you say that when colleges haven't opened yet?", came up, he responded with "studies" and furthermore said it is inevitable that a campus of that size will lose students every year even without a virus going around

Pavelec died at age 71 on July 27 from complications of COVID-19. The Huntington Beach native came down with symptoms a few days after attending a mid-June birthday celebration at a hometown bar. Four of the six friends would become sick, as well some of their family members.

Among the buddies who ended up fighting coronavirus was Dominic Menaldi, a colorful Surf City character. Over the years, Menaldi has transformed his head-turning “castle house” into a haunted mansion on Halloween. The bodyguard also grabbed attention two decades ago in a “Man Vs. Bear” wrestling match.

Her close friend Maria Lupita noted that Pavelec did not fit the stereotype of an “elderly” person succumbing to the disease.

“She was very healthy,” Lupita said. “I’m 48, and she could outdo me any day of the week. Vera lit up a room.”

For months, Pavelec took the risks of contracting coronavirus seriously – staying at home, for the most part, and wearing a mask when she ran errands.

But then she started letting her guard down a bit, her daughter said.

Pavelec posted a video and photos on Facebook of the June 12 birthday gathering at Tumbleweeds in Huntington Beach. This was an interlude when Gov. Gavin Newsom briefly allowed restaurants to reopen for indoor dining at reduced capacity.

In the images, Pavelec and her friends enjoy the night –  dancing, arms draped over one another’s shoulders, no face masks.

Tumbleweeds owner Frank Tahvildari said he learned about the group’s fate weeks later on Facebook. None of his employees have tested positive for COVID-19, he said.

“We have a policy: Our employees must wear masks at all times,” Tahvildari said. “People make comments to them like, ‘You don’t have to wear that thing.’ Yes, they do.”

Tahvildari was not at the restaurant on the night in question, but said signs were posted asking customers to wear masks and stay off the dance floor.

“People don’t want to listen,” he said.

On July 30, Menaldi posted that he had recovered – describing in detail his horrific experience with coronavirus as well as his grief over the loss of Pavelec.

He did not return requests for comment.

Nearly every single school district in Western Washington is going online only. Seattle managed to get enough technology funding to supply all kids K-2 with an iPad and 3-12 a Chromebook. The plan at the moment is a full day of online instruction and my daughter is a hardcore rule follower and will do well with this, but I'll be interested to see how it goes for other kids.

Also, our tribe is using some of their CARES funds to buy all the kids an iPad or a laptop for school, which is awesome. We'd been talking about getting her one, but now we don't have to and while we can afford it, it's still much appreciated.
