"Funeral home overcrowded with bodies. Numerous healthcare professional dying. The President (pbuh) on TV every night. Surgeon General warning it might be the worst weeks ever for many of our fellow countrymen. Weird smell coming from the neighbor's flat, but at least he's not coughing all night anymore. Just a normal flu season, like every year."

Certainly isn't a typical flu year. What I am still curious about though is how much of it is down to there being no vaccine or herd immunity, and how much of it is it down to the seriousness of the virus. Because in comparison to the flu, it might be a little worse, or a lot worse. It might be simply more infectious in general. We don't quite know what it is at the moment.

Lets say hypothetically speaking millions of people in a relatively short period of time contracted the flu. You would actually see the hospitals overrun in a very similar way. I'm not saying that is the case with Covid. It is the case though that it is highly infectious and there is no vaccine or herd immunity to slow the spread. And to what extent is that responsible for the outcomes we're seeing.

France broke the 10k deaths ceiling  :doge
Probably because of a large backlog entry for deaths in retirement homes. Those are probably going to add up every day for a week.

607 dead in French hospitals last day, it would seem that's the plateau. Total : 7091.
820 more deaths attributed to COVID in long term care homes, for a total of 3237.

Positive cases : over 3,7k + possibly 7k in long term care homes, all added today. Edit : Oh we also went over 100k positive cases tested.

Still a lot of people having to go ICU but the net increase of ICU beds being occupied is at +59 and that has been steadily decreasing since April 1st. Same for the people checking in at the hospital.

Oh boy a new press conference

- Government is going to invest heavily in an app which signals if you've been in contact with someone who has the virus (uuuuhhh....)

- Testing will have to become more common (k thanks)

- The government will decide in the week prior to April 28th if the intelligent lockdown will remain in effect (cool)

- After April 28th, we will 'slowly' return to normal if possible but people shouldn't expect that to go quickly (police state? government likes this!)

- No new decisions, please stay at home during Easter

Another bit of info for French deaths : over 82% of people dying at the hospital are 70+. And that's without the long term care homes...
I think the WHO said 95% of deaths in Europe were 70 or 60 years old or more.

Probably similar to why Washington state is doing the same thing more so than other states. The citizens are taking it serious and actually staying the fuck home.

Can't wait to hear the very sensible and supportive comments President of the United States Donald J. Trump will have for that.

The team also found that antibody levels rose with age, with people in the 60-85 age group displaying more than three times the amount of antibodies as people in the 15-39 age group.

The more serious the infection the greater the antibody response and persistence?

All of the patients had recently recovered from mild symptoms of the disease and most of those with low antibody levels were young. The researchers excluded patients who had been admitted to intensive care units because many of them already had antibodies from donated blood plasma.

"friendly reminder in times of uncertainty and misinformation: anecdotes are not data."

Posted on Twitter... a platform largely used to post tweets that are links to stories nobody reads, instead people just end up reading the "hot take" on the story in the tweet itself.  lol
Well yeah... that’s exactly the kind of place where you would want to reinforce the idea that a random hot take is not something you should blindly accept, share and parrot. I know desperately shying away from critical introspection is the purple way but now is not the time.

US at 1900 dead today.  Bad day for Canada too at 54, CBC already has 22 more in Ontario for tomorrows numbers.  I was really hoping we'd see a bit more stability due to the lockdown measures by now.

Well in the US, we went from doubling of cases/deaths happening every 3 days to a week so that is an improvement. It's too early to tell how much different measures like voluntary social distancing, mandatory lockdowns, masks, and increased testing affect the rate of growth. Therefore, we can't really know yet how much we can return to normal before the vaccine is available.

I think the two important things to keep in mind is that the rate of infection is still accelerating, despite all the new measures, and that the mortality rate also appears to be increasing. Although mortality might just look like it is increasing because we don't have enough testing capacity to confirm every mild case. So it's possible that the numbers show 30k confirmed new cases a day but the actual number might be around 100k new cases, in which case the mortality rate would actually be staying steady at around 1-2% rather than the 5% that the numbers seem to be showing right now.

Note it seems the US only has a capacity of like 100k tests per day:
https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/07/coronavirus-testing-173607

So unless we massively reduce/level off the number of new cases/day, it doesn't seem like our testing capacity will ever catch up.
