If this is how America responds to a natural epidemic imagine how badly they would get steamrolled by actual biological warfare.

Early results of the study of a german hotspot of the corona outbreak are in. Apparently 14% of the population in Gangelt have already been infected by the virus and have developed immunity against corona. The mortality rate in Gangelt seems to be in the area of 0,35%. So this would imply a big dark figure, probably mainly from younger and asymptomatic people.

Doesn't help the people in ICU around the world right now, but hopefully this means this at least that all of this will be over a bit sooner.

MONTREAL ― More than one million jobs disappeared in Canada in March, according to the monthly labour force survey from Statistics Canada, pushing the jobless rate to 7.8 per cent.

The data showed another two million Canadians who still have work have seen their hours cut. Of those, 800,000 have seen their hours cut to zero.

As of March, 1.8 million+ Canadians lost their jobs or had their hours cut to zero (which is constructive dismissal).

Are zero hours a way of keeping employees on the books until wage subsidies kick in rather than being an attempt at constructive dismissal?

The wage subsidy is retroactive to March 15.
Constructive dismissal occurs when the employer unilaterally changes the terms of employment. The employer's intent is irrelevant. A small cut in hours will be enough. The employee can accept the changes.
I assume a lot of these are independent contractors, who aren't covered in the wage subsidy at all.

Honestly, Canada as a whole isn't doing that great in terms of the death rate.  Hopefully we can make Ontario and Quebec look more like BC in the next week or so.

PM and the modeling press conferences had very annoying reporter questions.  Every second question was 'How long is this going to last?' and the PM kind of got boxed into saying a year to year-and-a-half at least and that's only if people take is seriously now and we will not be going back to normal until we have a vaccine.  Also, he started talking about this as only the first wave.

I'll say without going into gory details;  having a pet nearly die during this sucked ass.  Had to drop him off, couldn't see him at all, if we did have to put him down there's questions of whether we can even be there (might have to soon), etc.

Really sorry, dude. Hope it ends up being ok.

But lets be honest, that's probably accurate. I'm expecting 1 1/2 years ultimately because if we let up too soon and people become complacent it will only get worse.

Our cat passed away a few years ago. She was 19 and had a good long life but damn was it hard. We sat with her at the vets while they put her to sleep. I feel you.

Em and I ended up burying her in our front yard during a rain storm. Seemed fitting. Damn cat.

They didn't include the UK in the study because of unavailable data on required age categories.

Wonder how these relate to population though?

Aren't different cities / regions populated by a different percentage of >65?

Like Florida is drasitcally different from NYC.
The second quote addresses this. Yes, the US regions have a younger population, but the relative risk for the younger population is still greater.

Table 2 addresses this as well. The Relative risk of COVID-19 death for those under 65 versus those ≥65 years is much greater in the US regions.

Belgium 0.020
Germany 0.023
Italy 0.030

New York City 0.067
Portugal  0.023
Spain 0.020
Sweden 0.020

As hoped, for the first time since the beginning of the crisis, more people left ICU than were admitted in France.

A lot more dead people in long term care homes retrospectively attributed to COVID however. Now 1/3 of all total fatalities and considering how it's ballooning I fully expect it to be half of it of more in a week.

Same with care homes here. It's a massacre because regular caretakers had to go and help out in the hospitals which admit mostly elderly but they weren't tested.
Those caretakers were replaced by temp workers who were recently unemployed and also not tested.
Until very recently they didn't test at all, so they found out today that for example 70 out of 90 residents have been infected in a single facility.

PPE's have been moved from care homes to hospitals too and it is hard to isolate or social distance dementia patients.

I wouldn't bet Amazon & all is doing that much of a killing right now though. Deliveries are partly being compressed from the top in some European countries and I would imagine a lot of people in the US are trying not to burn whatever money they have upfront too fast.
