Royal LePage is delusional:

Six million (out of a workforce of 16ish million) have applied for EI or CERB (which requires zero income at the moment), but don't worry home prices will be basically flat.

The G9 or G7 or G8 of whatever it is now basically dropped a Czar bomba on their economies.

You need a lot of optimism, booze and brrrrrrr for this one but unemployment is already skyrocketing.

The German state that got hit the hardest during the pandemic wants to open up its schools on Monday. I can’t help but think that it’s a political move by their PM who is tanking in approval ratings, but desperately wants to take Merkel‘s throne.
Laschet can get fuuucked. Hope it blows up in his face. :pacspit

Honestly think it would be great if we could let those people write their finals. But considering the numbers, it just seems like a bad idea to open it for everyone, even if it's gonna be in waves.

Only thing worse than Laschet is Söder gaining traction. The good thing is that Merz had rona and basically cant do shit while others like Söder, Spahn and Laschet are able to present themselves.

Left the house as little as possible the past few weeks. Had to run to the convenience store to grab something to make dinner (groceries arent showing up till tomorrow).

On the entire drive there and back, despite there being plenty of people out and about, i saw a single (1) other person even bothering wearing a mask. Grim shit.. people are really living in a bubble out here.

Went out today food shopping, I only had a scarf to wrap my face in... but thankfully the stores were pretty empty (immediately after work seems like a good time to go) and most of the people there were wearing masks. Still a bit freaked out since my latex glove ripped  :-\

You can't go into stores here without a face covering. A friend of mine told me last night she was at the store and a guy with NUNCHUCKS tried to get in with no face cover and the lady at the door wouldn't let him until he covered his face. He ended up taking off his shirt and using that, so then there was an angry, shirtless guy with NUNCHUCKS in the grocery store.

Washington (CNN)An Indiana congressman said Tuesday that letting more Americans die from the novel coronavirus is the "lesser of two evils" compared with the economy cratering due to social distancing measures.

Speaking with radio station WIBC in Indiana, Republican Rep. Trey Hollingsworth asserted that, while he appreciated the science behind the virus' spread, "it is always the American government's position to say, in the choice between the loss of our way of life as Americans and the loss of life, of American lives, we have to always choose the latter."
"The social scientists are telling us about the economic disaster that is going on. Our (Gross Domestic Product) is supposed to be down 20% alone this quarter," Hollingsworth said. "It is policymakers' decision to put on our big boy and big girl pants and say it is the lesser of these two evils. It is not zero evil, but it is the lesser of these two evils and we intend to move forward that direction. That is our responsibility and to abdicate that is to insult the Americans that voted us into office."
Hollingsworth told CNN, in a statement provided by his office later Tuesday, that "It's hyperbolic to say that the only choices before us are the two corner solutions: no economy or widespread casualties."

Los Angeles County health officials on Tuesday confirmed 40 more deaths linked to the coronavirus, the highest number reported in a single day.

The county’s death toll now stands at 360, Public Health Department Director Barbara Ferrer said, noting that the mortality rate has increased to 3.6%.

Ferrer confirmed 670 additional COVID-19 cases, bringing the county’s total to more than 10,000. Officials have previously said the case count includes people who have recovered, but there is currently no way to track those numbers.

Of more than 63,000 people who have been tested in the county, 11% were positive. Ferrer said that percentage could indicate that of Los Angeles County’s 10 million residents, “we could have as many as 1 million people at some point in time” who are infected. Of course, not every individual will obtain testing for COVID-19.

Basing on my scientific measure of "what the news is covering" it seems the peak here has already happened as they're starting to go back to accidents and crime instead of reporting on new cases since there hasn't been any.

Plus everyone mad at the governor for banning the purchasing of seeds or paint.

I don't know what Detroit's arc looks like though, the one hospital said they weren't really getting new patients so much as people who already had it getting worse like contracting pneumonia or whatever. Which to me as a layman regarding sicknesses sounds like good news, not for those people obviously, but for everyone else.

Also from the e-mails I get from places, they seem like they want to re-open somewhat or at least start testing the waters. The credit union especially has been spamming about "SETTING UP AN APPOINTMENT IF YOU NEED TO" and "EXPANDED DRIVE-THRU HOURS" when a few weeks ago they were like "GET YOUR MONEY OUT OF THE ATM OR SHUT THE FUCK UP" with like two hours of being open for the drive-thru.

My parents have been going to the store during the "Senior Hours" in the morning and said that there really wasn't anybody yesterday, when there had been lines in the weeks before.

ASO really, really wants to have the Tour de France at the usual dates. The rest of the cycling schedule is being shifted around, with the Giro and Vuelta taking places after the Tour.

Edit : Actually, I'm wrong, they delayed it to August's end.

A court in Nanterre, France slapped Amazon with a legal order to only fulfill food and health related orders for the time being, so as to limit risks to their own workforce.

Amazon is appealing and an economic & social council for the company is about to be convened, with union leaks suggesting they might discuss closing all Amazon centers for five days to review their COVID safety measures as ordered.

Note: Ontario, for example, didn't order closures until March 17. And even then, Ontario kept open manufacturing facilities, construction sites, and office buildings. A week later, the province ordered the closure of non-essential businesses, with a ton of businesses deemed essential. Finally, in April, Ontario reduced the number of businesses deemed "essential."

In other words, if the GDP fell by 9% in March, it will fall 30% (from Feb's numbers) in April.

I got the stimulus deposit yesterday.  I’m saving most of it for now.  We’ve been swamped at work but the company I work for is furlough or lay-off happy during normal times so I’m half expecting to take at least a couple of weeks off next quarter.

I should be focusing more on school work but I just want to play video games or sleep.  I would be losing it if they completely close down the parks.  Walking my dog has been helping with keeping sanity.

"Boy, I sure do love living in Canada which is way better than our Southern neighbor at social welfare!"

(Image removed from quote.)

The difference is, I'm pretty sure the government underestimated the number of people who would not be covered by CERB, rather than willful neglect and I'd expect this to be rectified and post-dated now that it become a known issue (people were really just figuring out the details last week, and I just heard of the 1/3 not being covered about Friday).  Also, the people making up this group seem to be long-term unemployed and students.  Not saying that they are not in critical need of income but my guess is they are in less need than people who have an unexpected loss of income because of this.

from today https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/trudeau-says-help-coming-for-students-unable-to-find-summer-jobs-1.4883310

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/cerb-covid19-benefits-trudeau-1.5523052

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/coronavirus/pm-trudeau-updates-wage-subsidy-and-aid-for-students-will-attend-cabinet-in-person-1.4887926

Quote
The government has also announced temporary changes to the Canada Summer Jobs program. Now, employers who hire summer students can apply for a subsidy of up to 100 per cent to cover the cost, helping create up to 70,000 jobs for Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30.

The time frame for the job placements are also being extended until the winter, given some jobs will “start later than usual,” Trudeau said. The student hires can also be employed part-time, given many businesses have had to scale back their operations.

CERB (which requires zero income at the moment).

From the PMs speech today: CERB is being expanded to some lost income but not zero (people making less than 1000$ a month).  Essential workers are getting top-ups.  Also, people who run out of EI, and seasonal workers will get something.   Also something about artists, copy-right and CERB which I didn't follow.

My Dad pulled through and is conscious again after being in a medically induced coma for days. He is still on a ventilator, but they think he'll be able to come off of it in a day or two possibly. He improved very quickly and suddenly after being treated with a new drug combo. His Wife is still in the hospital and yesterday she and I got to talk and she's improving, but still on oxygen still struggling. I hope they are on the road to recovery, whatever that might look like.

I'm navigating UI and keep up my daily calls to see if my claim was updated or even accepted. I'm starting to worry about where my household is going to recieve income from as things become more and more difficult and with no end in sight. I'm hoping for a reprieve at some point, but honestly resorting to calling up every company I have bills with to see if they can offer some relief during these times. So far the only company that has stepped up is T-mobile, they reduced my bill down to $25 a month for 6 months with a recurring bill credit. It's frustrating because the job freeze is very real in my area. The kicker is I was just getting to a place where I could rejoin the job market. So much work put into myself, that I'm not able to see results with at this time.

The Missus' birthday is tomorrow and I can't go out and get her favorite cake, and can't find basic ingredients at the stores around here to bake anything. I was hoping to find something for her day, but that isn't gonna happen from the looks. The stores around here are bare with essentials and have been slow to restock items. I got lucky and found a thing of cooking oil and some dairy products earlier this week. The meat sections are either closed or reduced to prepackaged goods. Bakery area is shut down with only certain companies continuing to stock the shelves with bread. It's a damn mess out there. The real cost of closing restaurants is realizing just how many people use them to eat daily around here. While some are still open a vast amount of them are no longer open or have reduced hours, which is driving folks to grocery stores. And good luck using online ordering like Amazon Fresh or Instacart, they might as well not be offering any service.

Merkel outlined some perspectives for transition.
Schools should reopen gradually starting May 4 (May 11 for France).
Probably no large gatherings before end of August (mid-July for France but I expect that target to be moved back, it wasn't anything firm).

Parents can't go work if they have to keep the kids all day.
Kids are very unlikely to get severe symptoms. I would imagine most parents are not in the most at risk demographic (school staff... Is maybe a bit iffy). I guess governments think it is safe enough.

6 weeks summer holidays.

It's no rush. It's a staggered restart for schools. First and foremost for those classes that are writing their finals.
That doesn't include elementary schools or kindergarten. They want to beef up the emergency child care for those that won't be able to look after their kids. This was mostly done for essential workers before, but considering that there are more people that will get back to work next week, you'll need more options for children.

Overall I think it's a good idea. Trying to get the important classes in first. Same for the shops. Don't overload the cities right away.

One thing I think I forgot to mention is that Macron said that seniors will probably have to stay in curfew longer than the rest of the population.

Considering they're planning to have the Tour de France starting late August, I think that behind the doors the "pessimistic" assessment must be pretty similar to German plans.

Europeans governments are betting they can keep the infection in check by cutting on large gatherings, mass travel, protecting at risk populations, a more adequate testing capacity & mask supply. We don't fundamentally have new tools to turn this around for now, I hope they're right because otherwise we're in for long years.

Luxembourg is making masks (or equivalent) mandatory next Monday.

Belgium extends lockdown to May 3, mask wearing is "advised", large gatherings not before August 31.

The EU has:

3 No way to quickly approve funding for research
4 No way to mass produce vaccines
5 No way to fully control / protect their outer borders
6 No way to brrrrrr on a federal level
7 No one in charge of this on a European level (the previous person responsible resigned for 'yo tho' see 2 and 3)
8 No consensus of how to deal with this outbreak
9 No Larry Kudlow
10 No testing capacity
11 No ventilators
