Deaths have exceeded SARS with 400 versus its 300 in China. Researchers warn it could be a pandemic but so far they believe that Coronavirus has a low death rate at 2% because many in China that were inflicted are now well. How many will die is now the main concern. By comparison, tens of millions died from Spanish flu in 1918. But it had a rate of 2% as well. It's just that so many contracted it. So far Corona is said to be  contagious, almost like an influenza, so we're definitely not out of the woods.

Spanish flu was so deadly because it was basically the perfect time for a pandemic to strike. Lots of people moving around the world, poor hygiene, poor general health because off the war, lack of resources because of the war, lack of communication about the spread of the pandemic because of the war. Basically, without WWI, Spanish flu would have been a minor event.

Fun fact which I learned from a WWI podcast, Spanish flu actually originated in the USA and was transported to Europe by US soldiers. It was called Spanish flu, because as a neutral country, Spain didn't have the same restrictions on the press as the combatant countries and that meant it was the first place which actually reported it, even though it had been rampaging across France for a while.

The situation for the 2003 SARS outbreak was completely different, because asymptomatic people were not contagious. It's obvious hard to contain something when it's capable of spreading, yet entirely undetectable.

SARS was also a lot more virulent, so there's that.

That's not quite right.
The Spanish flu was completely different because it was the deadlier the stronger your immune system was (it caused an immune storm), thus killing mostly young and healthy people. 2019-nCoV is predominantly deadly to people with weakened immune system (the same group of people that is normally more adversely affected by pneumonia).

This is pretty cool.

Best case scenario would be if it worked like herpes. After the symptoms go away, the virus stays dormant in your body and then one day BAM it's back and you are infectious. Thats why like 80% of the world has it.

Throw in a 2% mortality rate every time you experience symptoms and we have ourselves a party.

Yeaaaah. From what I understand cruise ships are like mobile contagious disease (and STI) carriers because of so many people interacting (and fucking) in small trapped proximity. Was only a matter of time until someone with the virus is a tourist on a ship and everyone gets it.

Also I have a feeling one of the major outbreaks in the USA and other countries that have it contained so far is gonna be someone from HK or Japan visiting the USA while it's still incubating since most countries are only watching out for people coming in from China. HK especially is starting to spread and people fly from HK everywhere.

First meal in 18 hours. Being diabetic and dairy intolerant there is nothing here I can eat. They have since brought me 4 bread rolls & butter.

We have now up anchored and on our second cruise in Japanese waters. It is going to be tough on rationed food, and with no alcohol!

No services onboard the ship now. How the crew are going to cope with this beats me. This is a huge challenge for Diamond Princess.

We are out at sea now converting sea water into drinking water. Ship was running low on water for showers etc.

So with these cruise ships (2 now!), I don't get why they can't dock them and have mainland people bring truck shipments of supplies (food/water/medics)??

I mean I'm sure hoping they are bringing major medics on, because otherwise all these people on the ship who are gonna get bad pneumonia without medical attention are gonna die. If the ships are left at sea, the death count on them is gonna be severe imo.

They have plenty of food and water, I think the issue is that the crew might be infected and do you want them cooking?

I actually have a non-joke update:

My office mate’s daughter was ERed to the hospital this morning with symptoms.

I’m sure this will be fine and is likely not the virus but

1) she’s from china and was there in december
2) she currently lives in San Jose, where there are confirmed cases

Could it be my time?

No more details at the moment. My manager is going to talk to hr because he doesn’t know if he should tell anyone else (this office mate isn’t his property). What will HR tell him? I prob won’t find out until tomorrow when I talk to him again.

This is all really probably nothing but THE POSSIBILITIES

The patient is a Wisconsin resident who recently visited Beijing, China, and was exposed to cases while in China.

Test results for coronavirus came back positive on Wednesday. The patient was tested for the virus at UW Hospital in Madison.

DHS staff said the patient is “doing well” and is no longer in the hospital. However, the patient is currently in isolation at their home.

One of the best hospitals in the country btw, I doubt they'd shoo a person home to die.

Well then you have the case of the first US person who was mild cold symptoms whatever and then suddenly 9 days in advanced pneumonia. I feel like if you have it you'd best be near a hospital in case that happens. Though I've never had pneumonia so idk if you can just go to the hospital then or if you're like I'm so ded I can't even call 911.

China has decided to implement the final solution to the virus problem.

Quote
A senior Chinese official has ordered the authorities in the city of Wuhan to immediately round up all residents who have been infected with the coronavirus and place them in isolation, quarantine or designated hospitals.

Sun Chunlan, a vice premier tasked with leading the central government’s response to the outbreak that is centered in Wuhan, said city investigators should go to each home to check the temperatures of every resident and interview infected patients’ close contacts.

“Set up a 24-hour duty system. During these wartime conditions, there must be no deserters, or they will be nailed to the pillar of historical shame forever,” Ms. Sun said.

The city’s authorities have raced to meet these instructions by setting up makeshift mass quarantine shelters this week. The shelters are meant for coronavirus patients with milder symptoms, the government has said. But concerns are growing about whether the centers, which will house thousands of people in large spaces, will be able to provide even basic care to patients and protect against the risk of further infection.
