the BTP wasn't about paying taxes, it was about paying taxes without having parliamentary presence. The EIC were allowed to sell duty free tea (even in the US) which meant US suppliers could not meet the same price. Meanwhile scottish and english courts in the early 1770s had both seperately ruled that no englishman could be a slave or own a slave, as there had been no legal definition of slavery at that point as it just hadn't come up, and abolitionists were trying to push through legislation based on those rulings to extend that to if no englishman could be or own a slave, they shouldnt be in the business of buying or selling slaves either.
