Well, Smash Bros is a compendium of (mainly) the japanese videogame industry, so it's predictable that the outcome is a "not black" roster, it's wrong to say that the roster is mostly white when they are japanese videogame characters, it's the same as saying that anime characters are white (unless stated otherwise, Link, for example, isn't white, because he doesn't come from this world).
Should Smash have more representation? That's a question that, at least in my view, is more in line with the USA black racism issue, which is not only singular in it's issues than the rest of the world (and I will give the example of Brazil, where I live, that even though we have some similarites when the subject is racism, we live in a all togheter different reality than in the US, so our racism conjuncture is another beast, brazilian black movements do give a damm about representation in movies and TV, but in a japanese videogame? Not at all), even more different in Japan, where this issue is much less present (not saying there isn't black racism in Japan, but the police doesn't kill people because of their skin color, like in the US and Brazil).
Tldr: you are creating an issue that is unilateraly an US view of the black racism issue, that is diferent in Japan, so it doesn't make sense to point fingers at Nintendo for not seeing the issue as you do

I mean I’m not saying you should excuse Japan. They seem to have their own fucked up issues. An outsider looking in, their super homogeneous culture seems rather problematic. They also seem to be behind the rest of the world when it comes to issues like gay rights and men and women's equality. But also I don’t know what the social issues of Japan are.

But at the same time, I’m not going to expect their pop culture to have a good grip on issues facing America. I’m not expecting the homogenous culture’s pop media to really be on the level when it comes to diversity. An issue we as the melting pot of the world still are having issues with. I’m also not going to take issue with Smash not having the best representation when it’s pulling from years of that countries pop culture. One to me only recently has moved past the 80s action movie store types of minorities. It's ignorance to me. That's the issue.
