I thought reeeeee loved Kotaku?
It became cool when their management screwed up a couple of times
Even Jason went from defending his dear colleagues to making his own snide remarks

To be fair Kotaku was already viewed as a joke on GAF (banned as a source at one point, even, IIRC ?) which isn't too surprising because that was a common opinion in every gamer community that most vidya press was low quality and Kotaku especially into chasing clicks (can't seem to locate that cartoon of the Kotaku office being staffed by... Dolphins ?).
GAFERA had a major mood swing after Gamergate*. The jokes and criticism were a lot more muted but never really went away... And I will agree with that ERA quote that it became really apparent in the constant lionization of J.Schreier which often was, by contrast, thinly veiled damning-with-faint-praise for the rest of Kotaku.
In typical ERA fashion : Lots of people didn't think any less about the failings of the gaming press but everyone behaves themselves and tries to keep that loud part quiet.
Still shines through in review threads and what not, it doesn't take a lot to have accusations flying.
* And after that Trump, Fake News stuff and the mawkish "Subscribe to the NYT, WaPo everyone !" sentiment.
