I was on Facebook having a very friendly discussion with someone who believed that video games don't typically have politics in them. Basically that just because Metal Gear solid has politics in it, does not make it "Political". To him, political games are those that attempt to influence you, they don't necessarily have the artists political opinion in them. I countered in the multiple instances of political opinions in Metal Gear solid, to which he replied that he himself has opinions, but they are not political, and wouldn't necessarily be shown in a video game if he made one.

This was my counter thoughts.



You have political beliefs whether you think you do or not.
Say you have 10 people in a village. 8 of them work. 1 of them is filthy rich. 1 is dirt poor and disabled.
What do you do?
Do you tell the person who lives in extreme excess to give to the 1 poor dude who can't work?
Do you all pitch in an equal amount to take care of the one dude that doesn't work?
Do try to create a system in which that one dude can make a profit of his own?
Do you tell him thats how the world works and he needs to find a way?
How you answer that question is just one facet of your political beliefs.

Your political beliefs and your philosophical beliefs are the exact same. Your political beliefs are just how you put those philosophical opinions in action.
What is fair, what is right, what is just, what is good, everyone has different opinions on that and those beliefs will be presented in the art you create.
You say you aren't political, and if you made a game you wouldn't have "politics" in your game, but how would you write your story if those thoughts were not presented. Thats why something like Metal Gear Solid isn't "apolitical". If you were to make a game with a story like that, even though you say you are "apolitical" your politics would shine through.

He disagreed, simply saying that his view about how the world should work does not equal politics, and that a game he makes would be apolitical,because he himself is apolitical.

What say you ERA? Thoughts?

You know, I frequently feel super out of touch with modern-day gaming... but then I go see this thread and am just lol. Like... in this thread some of the things people don't get are RTS games, sports games, Japanese games, Naughty Dog games, Rockstar games... things that have been popular for a loooooong time (and even some whose heydays have passed).
