80s vs 90s
« on: February 03, 2020, 04:14:54 PM »
I always thought the 80s but 90s might be up for a re-evaluation.

Terminator 2, X Files, Ocarina of Time, PSX, Matrix , Mobb Deep, Wu Tang Clan, Guns n Roses, Ajax winning the CL

Decade was stacked

I find fondness of the 80's strange in a lot of ways. The crack epidemic, HIV, Reagan, New Wave and hair bands being as repetitive and soon to be played out as Disco.

If we base our enjoyment of life around pop culture and toys, we've been living in endless bliss in the US for 50-60 years. In a social sense, if you're a white guy, the 80's would be a pretty radical time. If you were black or gay, imagine being in a hellhole where Ratt and The Scorpions are blaring, and the government/people at large consider you a thug or a cigarillo.

1984 was peak, white American culture and everything after that was just regurgitating it, eating it and pretending it was new food.

Sub-cultures existed. In fact, there was a good amount of cache in liking things that didn't fit into the what the monoculture was into.

The 90s easily had better videogames and television shows.

For me:

Movies [80s] Brazil, Repo Man, Mad Max 2, Blue Velvet, Platoon, Aliens, Robocop... too many to name, man.
Games [90s] I'm particularly fond of games from this era, be it art style, experimentation, whatever.  Good shit.
Music (VGM & electronic) [90s] I'm an avid collector of Japanese electronic music from the 90s. A spend too much money on it.
Animation (series & movies) [80s/90s mix] Again, too many... Gunbuster, Patlabor, Ducktales, The Real Ghostbusters (lol), Moomin anime series (fuck you, it's great).

80s had cool visuals and music, 90s had cool video games.

00s are trash-tier.

If you were black or gay, imagine being in a hellhole where Ratt and The Scorpions are blaring, and the government/people at large consider you a thug or a cigarillo.

Well as a silver lining, you'd be privy to the origins of house and techno, as well as the first wave of commercial hiphop.

I think the 80's has more of a 'novel' feel for me, especially in terms of aesthetic, but when it came to games, movies, music, it's hard to beat the 90s.

00's was a bit of a downer of a decade, from 9/11 to the recession of 08.

90's ended over 20 years ago, brehs. Crazy to think. Seems like just yesterday I was watching Suburban Commando, where the biker gang threatens Hulk Hogan with "this is the 90's...we're gonna sue."

Prefer almost everything from the 90s but 80s wins on better music alone. Just love 80s pop/disco/house.

There was a lot of cool underground shit in the '80s that seeped through in the 90s. This cut off makes me have to choose between TMIATTTT and Psalm 69, and that's just the work of one project! :-[

'80s owns for me, but it's just high school and college nostalgia. I can't get enough of music from that era. '80s introduced cajun food and sushi to America; that was when it broke wide.

But '90s was better for videogames, probably movies too.

I'd take metal overall in the 80's over the 90's in spite of hair metal
(Image removed from quote.)

Early norwegian black metal and the early days of Death are fantastic. But I'm a thrash thot at heart.

I know beloved classics like Rust In Peace and Painkiller came out in the 90's but still
[close]
90s death metal though :lawd :delicious

Peak Deicide, Morbid Angel, Hypocrisy, Cannibal Corpse, Entombed, Dismember, In Flames, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, My Dying Bride, Dissection, the list goes on and on.

I'm a black dude and while the 80s had racism, so did the 90, 00s, 10s, and now the 20s. (Look at our President lmao, an open white supremacist--thanks white dudes).  80s were just more fun cause I was a kid.

I'm not LGBTQ, so I won't comment on that, but those Ball scene dudes seemed to be having fun compared to the Twitter warriors of today.  AIDS was a huge bitch tho.
