I just finished "Playtest" for Black Mirror. I've been enjoying the series for the most part (bar the one that is about a mascot running for office) and each episode seems to one-up the previous one.

I'm sure a lot of you have probably already seen the series, but I'm catching up. I now can't imagine how "Bandersnatch" plays when they just did a game horror episode.

I would say A Million Merits is the best episode of Black Mirror. I think about it the most. San Junipero is right behind it though. The one about memory was good too, RDJ was trying to make a feature length out of it iirc.

Black Mirror ranking (so far):
1. Be Right Back (Season 2)
2. White Bear (Season 2)
2. White Christmas (Season 2)
2. Playtest (Season 3)
3. The National Anthem (Season 1)
4. The Entire History of You (Season 1)
5. Fifteen Million Merits (Season 1)
6. Nosedive (Season 3)
7.The Waldo Moment (Season 2)
8. Shut Up and Dance (Season 3)
----
Note: I haven't finished the series (and am going in "order") so this is just preliminary for me so far.

I really like Be Right Back because I love shows/books that explore death and remembrance (Dead Like Me is a favorite of mine) and how people grieve.

White Bear and White Christmas are tied (with Playtest joining them) because White Bear's entire twist I didn't see coming. It throws you into the deep end and you're like "what the fuck, what is wrong with these people?" and then it does "oh the mobile towers, if they break that, maybe things will happen!" (as in a case of life imitating art: 5G FAST DOE) and then you find out this main character is really a bad person that you shouldn't be cheering for.

Same with White Christmas. I REALLY enjoyed that one even though it isn't Christmas time right now. I wasn't expecting Jon Hamm at all, so it was really a surprise to see him on the "show"/special (which was before Netflix and possibly cancelled?) and he played his part really brilliantly to where the twist I knew was possibly going to happen eventually but I wasn't expecting it in the way they did it.

(I don't necessarily want to open spoiler in case folks around here are going to catch up on it like me)

I'm watching TV to escape current events but in ep 4 of ds9 there's a pandemic and quark claims his bar is technically essential so it can stay open :dead

also the virus is an ENGINEERED BIOWEAPON :hans1

So what you're saying is that it's predictive programming ? :hans1

Home Movies
Monster
Boardwalk Empire
Freaks and Geeks
Veronica Mars
Lost
Cowboy Bebop

I'm not sure if Boardwalk Empire is classic but 10 years ago makes it sort of classic

+1 Freaks and Geeks

I always forget about white christmas because I watched it closer to when it aired and it kind of is a massive downer to watch around holidays lol.  One of the bleakest endings the show has done. Show dips in quality a lot after S2/White Christmas. The overall tone shifted a little with the netflix money.

I dunno about changing the tone (though it seems more upbeat in Nosedive, but that was intentional with the focus on social-media points and all that), but the Netflix money definitely updated the art-department. A lot more CGI cities and the like.

I don't know if it's Netflix money and not just there's only so many variations you can make within that theme. They had 4 episodes which were about recording memories / fucking with perception via implants in the first two (three ?) seasons IIRC. Maybe I'm wrong but while prepping the show they maybe had time to come up with a lot of strong ideas and scripts and that's a luxury you don't have when you need to churn it year in year out.

Yeah, Black Mirror was never in danger of getting cancelled, it was just Netflix has more cash than Channel 4 does.

/still bitter about how Netflix moneys fucked Utopia season 3 ever happening

Of the Netflix funded eps, I think Shut Up And Dance is closest to its pre-Netflix roots

Apropos of nothing:

Utopia still one of the most imaginative and violent shows I've ever seen. Up there with Hannibal, nothing like it.
