I always like how Dexter was some math nerd or whatever who was like "I enjoy punk rock the same way I enjoy doing math".  :)

Quote
Holland attended Pacifica High School in Garden Grove, California, where he graduated as class valedictorian in 1984. During high school, Holland was the best student in mathematics in his year, and he found it "just as exciting as punk rock."[4] He then attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a B.S. degree in biology and an M.S. degree in molecular biology, and was a candidate for a Ph.D. in molecular biology.[5] However, after the success of The Offspring, he suspended his candidature to focus on music. In an interview in 1995, Holland had said when he turns 40, he would rather be a professor at a university than play music.[4]

Holland was a doctoral student at the Laboratory of Viral Oncology and Proteomics Research, Keck School of Medicine, where he was supervised by Professor Suraiya Rasheed.[6] In March 2013, Holland and co-authors published a paper in PLoS One regarding microRNA in HIV genomes,[7] titled "Identification of Human MicroRNA-Like Sequences Embedded within the Protein-Encoding Genes of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus".[8] The original academic paper describes the use of computational molecular biological (in silico) approaches to identify microRNA-like sequences in HIV. These sequences are suggested to have evolved to self-regulate survival of the virus in the host by evading its immune responses and thus influence the persistence, replication, and pathogenicity of HIV. Holland was awarded his Ph.D. degree in molecular biology during the USC Commencement on May 12, 2017.[9][10]

The first rock band I got into was Muse. Before then I only listened to jazz, hip hop, r&b, soul. I was basically a normie black person when it came to music.

When I thought of rock music I thought of wack music like this.

The most boring music on the planet.

Then a friend from the UK on a Squaresoft fansite kept talking about these bands. I wanted to know what the hype was. So around 2002/2003 I got into 00 rock. I thought most of it wasn't good tbh but found it interesting. I really, really liked Red Hot Chili Peppers. By the Way was a jam. And I started to really take a liking to punk. Mostly around 2003 when Joe Strummer died. I got into classics like The Clash. Still think the Ramones are amateur hour in compsrison. Eventually, as my music tastes developed I dumped it all and started listening to classic rock, which is still a mainstay over here. Rock from the 70's and 80's is still considered an ol' reliable for me. The equivalent of a PB&J sandwich.

I still really like Muse though. The Origin of Symmetry era - the one that got me into them - was beyond rad. I still love the album.

I'm not big on the post-OoS/Hullabaloo era.

These days I'd listen to Radiohead, Placebo, or Alice in Chains instead though, but it's still my opinion that 90's rock was the beginning of the genres twilight.

Full confession: I never really got grunge. I know it's sacrilege but I don't "get" Soundgarden beyond their singles and vastly prefer Smashing Pumpkins. If it counts, some of the few alt rock acts I fuck with are Sonic Youth, Pixie's, and subgenres like shoegaze. But grunge. I don't get it. It's a wannabe metal. Hell, it's even considered a metal subgenre and I still don't get it.

My 00 sins:

My friend that got me into Muse was REALLY info a band called Feeder. I liked them. I went back to them the other year and think they're trash. Odd experience going back to music you liked and hating it.

As a metal fan, I have to admit the idea of most alt rock is utterly repulsive. Sufjan Stevens doesn't count  though does he? *Holds copy of Illinoise tightly*

I listened to my local alt rock station the other month and the whole "I'm playing soft and building up to a very loud chorus" thing is still a thing. Such a horrific genre for lowlifes. Then they got the gall to wonder why rock isn't popular anymore. Nevermind how alt rock is even considered "alt" in 2020. An alternative to what?

The real question is where we place bands like Metric? :tocry

Late 90's Early 2000's pop punk is music that I didn't really like much at the time, but whenever I hear it I get a lot of nostalgia tings since that was such a fond era for me and it takes me back.

That early to mid 2000's emo was hugely popular around here (Brand New and Taking Back Sunday are both from the island) but I never got into it. My girlfriend was a huge fan of that kinda stuff and like... I just can't recognize any songs or any bands, none of them were really memorable for me. I couldn't even recognize a Nickelback or a Foo Fighters song either tbh.

2000's was the decade when, thanks to fast internet connections, sirius XM, joining forums and discussion groups for my favorite styles of music, the death of MTV, friends' whose music tastes stagnated and stayed in the 90's, I got pretty isolated from anything non-electronic.

Early 2000s I was mainly listening to and spinning prog:

Mid 2000s I was listening to and spinning electro:

I tried to get into minimal techno since around 2007-2008 you couldn't escape that stuff. I binged on it to try and find stuff I liked and ended up with very few tracks. Such as these (even though Solomun is a punchline nowadays):

Then the end of the decade was when minimal finally died out and deep/tech house got big, I fell hard for this and still love it.

Not to mention, at the end of the decade, electronic music was finally starting to get popular in the states. People wouldn't look at me all confused when I told them what I liked anymore...  though the first half of the 2010's is when the stuff really peaked in the states - Deadmau5, Avicii, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Martin Garrix, etc.
