Humble, Texas

Quote
Humble is a city in Harris County, Texas within the Houston–Sugar Land–Baytown metropolitan area. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 14,579. The city shares a zip code with the small neighborhood Bordersville, although people who live in Bordersville still have an Humble address.

Petroleum has been the basis of Humble's economy since its beginning. Loch Energy is headquartered in Humble; the city was the namesake for Humble Oil and Refining Company, which later merged with the Exxon corporation.

The city got its name from one of the original founders/settlers, a successful wildcatter originally from England named Pleasant Smith "Plez" Humble, who opened the first post office in his home and later served as justice of the peace. The proper pronunciation of the city is "umble" (the "H" being silent), as Plez pronounced his last name in that manner.

Worcester, Massachusetts

Quote
Worcester (pronounced /ˈwʊstə/) is a city in the state of Massachusetts in the United States of America. A 2004 estimate put the population at 175,966, making it the third-largest city in New England, after Boston and Providence, Rhode Island, making it also the second-largest city in Massachusetts, and the county seat of Worcester County.

In 2005, the city was the United States's 126th most populous city and is the core of the 64th most populous metropolitan area in the country. It marks the western periphery of the Boston-Worcester-Manchester (MA-RI-NH) Combined Statistical Area (CSA), the fifth largest in the United States. Citizens of Worcester are called Worcesterites.

Quote
Wormtown is a regional nickname associated with Worcester, Massachusetts, originally used to refer to the ethos of its underground musical subculture, but later applying to the city itself.

In September 1982, the rock band the Rolling Stones played an unscheduled performance at local nightclub Sir Morgan's Cove (now The Lucky Dog) before embarking on their national tour that year.

"Worcester" is correctly pronounced with two syllables, not three (IPA: [ˈwʊstər]listen). However, some varieties of the local dialect pronounce "Worcester" roughly to rhyme with "mister", or more precisely IPA: ['wɨstə], since Boston English is non-rhotic. Occasionally, the city's name is misspelled as "Worchester".

Its a beautiful City. Its like a meld between Metro a Suburbs (it breaks between the two rather easily). I lived in the outskirts of the Metro area (called Greendale).

About 13.2% of families and 16.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 23.9% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.

History

Trinity Site: Site of the First Atomic Bomb
The very first atomic bomb in history was detonated at the Alamogordo Test Range on July 16, 1945. The site of the explosion, called Trinity Site, is located on property owned by the present-day White Sands Missile Range. This was the only nuclear test that took place at this location. Trinity Site is actually located over a hundred miles away from Alamogordo, and is only open twice a year for visitors.

Col. John Paul Stapp, Fastest Man On Earth
On December 10, 1954 Colonel John Paul Stapp rode a rocket sled at Holloman AFB just outside Alamogordo that decelerated from 632 to 0 miles per hour in one and one-quarter seconds. His body experienced 46.2 time the force of gravity, in essence making him weigh 6,800 pounds for that brief time. At the time he was leading an Air Force team investigating the effects on the body of high altitude ejection seats.

Grave of Ham, First Chimp in Space
Ham was the world's first astrochimp, trumpeted by the United States as "the first free creature in outer space". He blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on January 31, 1961, and traveled 155 miles in 16.5 minutes before splashing down safely in the Atlantic.

After Ham died in 1983 at age 27, his body was shipped west and was buried in the front lawn of the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo, under the first slab of natural-tone concrete poured in Otero County.

Space Shuttle landing
In March 1982, Space Shuttle Columbia ended the third ever Shuttle mission, STS-3, by making the only landing to ever occur outside of California or Florida. The orbiter touched down at White Sands Missile Range near Alamogordo.

Atari Burial Grounds
Main article: E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Atari 2600)#The Atari landfill
In 1983, with the video game industry they had helped create crashing down around them, Atari warehouses were filled with millions of unsold video game cartridges they had optimistically overproduced, including 5 million E.T. cartridges. Basing a video game on a movie rather than an established arcade hit or a tested game premise (and expecting it to sell simply because of the popularity of the film) was a questionable enough decision, but the very bad quality of the finished product was unprecedented. Atari rushed E.T. through development in about 6 weeks (less than 1/3 of the usual game development period) to get it onto the market in time for Christmas, and the result was a virtually unplayable game with a vastly sub-standard plot and graphics in which frustrated players spent most of their time leading the E.T. character around in circles to prevent him from falling into pits. According to Atari's then-president and CEO, "nearly all of them came back."

Some other video game manufacturers attempted to rid themselves of excess inventory by selling it at sharply reduced prices, but Atari, stuck with millions of games and consoles — along with prototypes and limited runs of experimental Atari 2600 hardware like the questionable Mindlink system, a control method for the 2600 based on so-called mind-control (muscle tension) — that were largely unsellable at any price, sent fourteen truckloads of merchandise from their plant in El Paso, Texas, to be dumped in a city landfill in Alamogordo in late September 1983. In order to keep the site from being looted, D9 Caterpillars crushed and flattened the games, and a concrete slab was poured over the remains.

Book Burnings
Alamogordo briefly made international news in 2001 when Christ Community Church held a public book burning, including the books in the Harry Potter series. Other books and magazines were also burned; the congregation was told to burn anything that was getting in way of their walk with God. The people behind the burnings, Pastor Jack Brock and others, stated the belief that the books had Satanic origins and could influence children to take up witchcraft. Several hundred others protested the event.

----------------------------

Two things, I used to go to Christ Community Church.  I didn't live there during the book burnings, but I knew that place was fucking nuts.  I used to cry and refuse to go.  They built a gigantic church on top of a mountain and used to hold church sessions out on the mountain and it reminded me of a cult.

Also, I have one of the 2600's they dumped.  We lived about 2 miles from the landfill and my dad being the base commander in a military town, was able to basically do what he wanted.  So he asked for a shitload of them.  He still has like 10 of them.  I took one last time I went to visit him.  He has a few 2600's that have different design cases.  I just took a normal one.  He has a copy of E.T. but I wasn't going to torture myself  lolz

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sayville

Quote from: Wikipedia
Sayville is the name of a hamlet (and a census-designated place) in Suffolk County, New York, (USA) on Long Island. The population was 16,735 at the 2000 census.

Quote from: Wikipedia
The earliest Native American inhabitants of Sayville were the Secatogue tribe of the Algonquian Nation.

Sayville was founded by John Edwards (b. 1738, East Hampton, New York). He built his home, the first in Sayville, in 1761, located at what is now the northwest corner of Foster Ave. and Edwards St. The house was destroyed by fire in March, 1913. Another man, John Greene, settled what's now known as West Sayville in 1767.

The community had no formal name until 1838 when residents gathered to choose a formal name. Until that time, Sayville was known informally as "over south." The townspeople held a meeting to decide on a name, and after Edwardsville and Greensville tied in a vote, one resident suggested "Seaville." According to historical accounts, the clerk at that particular meeting did not know how to spell and had to go home and look in an old Bible he had brought from England years before. In the Bible, the word "Sea" was spelled "Say," and "Sayville" became the name he sent to Washington. After the error was discovered, the town sent a letter of protest to Washington; however, the Postmaster General responded that the town's name should stay "Sayville," as there were many Seavilles in the world but no Sayvilles. As a result, the name stuck. Incidentally, in some very old Bibles, the town name is also spelled "Saville."

God, I've heard this story so many times.

Quote from: Wikipedia
In 1912 a German Telefunken wireless transmitter was built in Sayville to broadcast to Germany. In 1915, the transmitter allegedly relayed a message from the German Embassy to "get Lucy" referring to the RMS Lusitania which was sunk on May 15. Whether the signals coming from the transmitter in Sayville authorized the attack or not, they caused concern for the US government which dispatched Marines to ensure encrypted messages were not sent. The station was seized by the government outright after war was declared in 1917. President Woodrow Wilson sent a contingent of Marines to take the wireless station, thus the first hostile action taken by the United States against Germany during World War I was in Sayville.

I live in Nazi-ville.

Quote from: Wikipedia
Famous residents of Sayville past and present include Melissa Joan Hart, star of Clarissa Explains It All and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch; author Robert Roosevelt; Tom Westman, a New York City fireman who won $1,000,000 on the reality show Survivor in 2005; and Marlon Brando, who was discovered for his first Broadway role shortly after having the starring role in a summer playhouse production. According to Cynthia Blair of Newsday Brando was expelled from an acting company, of the New School, in Sayville.

In 1998, media attention visited Sayville after a mother suffocated her 17 year-old daughter Charity Miranda in an effort to exorcise the demons supposedly afflicting her.

I honestly don't even remember that last thing.

Pyongyang is the capital city of North Korea, located on the Taedong River, at 39°02′N 125°45′E (39.0333, 125.75). The official population of the city is not disclosed; given as 2,741,260 in 1993, it was reported as 2.5 and 3.8 million in 2002 and 2003 by Chosen Soren, a pro-North Korean organization.

The city was split from the South P'yŏngan province in 1946. It is administered as a Directly Governed City (Chikhalsi), on the same level as provincial governments, not a Special City (Teukbyeolsi) as Seoul is in South Korea. Some sources, mostly older and South Korean, refer to P'yŏngyang as a Special City, but it has been reported that even the South Korean government adopted the Directly Governed City terminology in 1994.

Melissa Joan Hart was born in my town and then moved to Cajole's. Greater than 95% white... that's so horrible. We had a few Hispanic and Middle Eastern kids in high school, there was only like one black girl in my whole grade (650 kids in the graduating class). Such a high Italian population too, which isn't surprising at all.

And Mupepe, I'm almost embarrassed that I never even knew about that story. I have no recollection whatsoever. I think some girl mentioned it to me a few years ago and I was like, "What the fuck are you talking about?"

Quote
Dallas, Texas
Dallas (pronounced [ˈdæl.əs] or [ˈdæl.ʊs]) is the third-largest city in the state of Texas and the ninth-largest in the United States. The city covers 385 square miles (997 km²) and is the county seat of Dallas County.[4] As of 2005, U.S. Census estimates put Dallas at a population of 1.2 million. The city is the main cultural and economic center of the 12-county Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area—at over 5.8 million people, it is the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Dallas is recognized as a world-class city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group & Network.[5]

Dallas was founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city on 2 February 1856. The city is known globally as a center for telecommunications, computer technology, banking, and transportation. It is the core of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States and lacks any navigable link to the sea—Dallas' prominence despite this comes from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, its position along numerous railroad lines, and its powerful industrial and financial tycoons

That was boring.

Saint Paul is the capital and the second most populous city of the state of Minnesota in the Midwestern portion of the United States and is the county seat of Ramsey County. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 287,151, although that number had decreased to 276,963 in the 2004 Census estimates. In 2000 the U.S. Census Bureau considered referring to the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area as simply Minneapolis, which brought an outcry from many St. Paul residents as well as then Mayor Norm Coleman. The 2000 census’ list of metropolitan populations did indeed continue to include St. Paul in its name for the area. The city is now perhaps best known for its favorite sons, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Charles M. Schulz, but in 1820, it was an extreme outpost in the wild west, where Indians, European explorers and American soldiers (from neighboring Fort Snelling, just upstream on the Mississippi River) lived in close proximity. Saint Paul and the adjacent city of Minneapolis form the core of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Of the two Twin Cities, St. Paul might be described as a somewhat bookish brother to Minneapolis in that it is festooned with small liberal arts colleges, tightly adherent to tradition, and fastidious in its street level presentation, and less interested in the high-rise, glass sheathed architecture meant to be appreciated by “angels and aviators.”

I'm currently sitting in the tallest tan building in the middle of the picture.

Main article: St. Paul neighborhoods
Image:Stpaul.png Saint Paul is noted for its neighborhoods; the city has been called "fifteen small towns with one mayor", owing to the neighborhood-based life of much of the city.

The city's fifteen main neighborhoods include:

Saint Anthony Park
Merriam Park
Highland Park
Battle Creek
Como Park
Dayton's Bluff
 Downtown
Greater East Side
Macalester-Groveland
North End
Payne-Phalen
Summit Hill
 Summit-University
The Midway
Thomas-Dale ("Frogtown")
West Seventh ("the West End")
West Side

The "West" Side neighborhood seems oddly located to the south, but is so named because it is on the west bank of the Mississippi River.

I live in the Summit Hill Neighborhood. Pretty nice area.

Like most cities in the western Santa Clara Valley, Cupertino was originally developed in the early 20th century. Since the 1980s, Cupertino's demographics have gradually shifted so that Asian Americans (mostly of Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian descent) form one of the largest ethnic groups in Cupertino.
A major cause of this demographic shift is that many immigrants moving from Asia to the Bay Area wish to enroll their children in high-quality public schools, and select the well-known Cupertino Union School District and Fremont Union High School District.
One sign of the demographic shift is the rise of Chinese-oriented shopping centers in Cupertino. The largest one is the Cupertino Village complex north of Vallco Fashion Park. This center, which replaced the unsuccessful Vallco Village project, has a 99 Ranch Market as its anchor. Other Asian-themed shopping centers are also centered around grocery supermarkets, such as Marina Food Market anchoring the Marina Square on Stevens Creek Boulevard, Imahara Produce and Oriental Foods on Stevens Creek Boulevard, and Kumud Groceries on De Anza Boulevard. Some non-Asian themed large chain stores (Albertsons, Safeway, Nob Hill, Whole Foods, Target, Sears) also operate in Cupertino.
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 50,546 people, 18,204 households, and 13,616 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,783.9/km² (4,620.5/mi²). There were 18,682 housing units at an average density of 659.3/km² (1,707.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 50.14% White, 0.69% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 44.44% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 1.26% from other races, and 3.14% from two or more races. 3.98% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Cupertino is sometimes referred to as the "heart" of Silicon Valley, as the worldwide headquarters for Apple (the creator of the Apple Macintosh and the iPod) is located here in a modern complex circled by the playfully named Infinite Loop. Apple has also recently announced that it will be building a new 50-acre campus along Interstate 280 near Pruneridge Ave. -- across the street from the 100-acre HP parcel. Other companies headquartered in Cupertino include Borland, NetManage, Packeteer, Portal Software, and Symantec. Over 60 high-tech companies have offices here, including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and Sun Microsystems. Most of these hi-tech companies are located on De Anza Boulvevard, Cali Mill Plaza, and Bubb Road.
Cupertino is very well known for its high achieving primary and secondary schools. For example, Faria Elementary School is the number one ranked elementary public school in the state of California, per California API test scores.
Furthermore, Monta Vista High School is ranked number 23 out of all the public schools in the nation.
Primary (K-8) public schools are organized into the Cupertino Union School District, while the Fremont Union High School District is responsible for high school students. Cupertino High School and its feeder school, Hyde Middle School, are located in the Rancho Rinconada section of Cupertino, while Monta Vista High School and its feeder, Kennedy Middle School, are in the Monta Vista neighborhood in the western half of Cupertino. There is also a new school called Lawson Middle School that feeds mostly Cupertino and Monta Vista High. In addition, Homestead High School is located in the northwestern portion of Cupertino, along the city border with neighboring Sunnyvale. The school system covers Cupertino plus some southern areas of Sunnyvale and Los Altos.

It's fucking horrible.

The Bronx

The Bronx is New York City's northernmost borough. It is the only one of the city's five boroughs situated on the United States mainland rather than on an island. As of 2005, the United States Census Bureau estimated that the borough's population was 1,357,589.

The borough of the Bronx is coterminous with Bronx County. Although commonly known as "The Bronx", the official county name does not include the definite article ("The").

Named for Jonas Bronck, a Swedish sea captain and 1641 resident whose 500-acre (2 km²) farm between the Harlem River and the Aquahung[3] comprises part of the modern borough, the Bronx is the fourth most populous of New York City's five boroughs. Bronx County is the fifth most populous county in the New York Metropolitan Area.

Quote
Geography

The Bronx is the only New York City borough with a freshwater river (the Bronx River) running through it. A smaller river, the Hutchinson River, passes through the northeast Bronx and empties into Eastchester Bay.

The Bronx includes two of the largest parks in New York City, Pelham Bay Park and Van Cortlandt Park. Pelham Bay Park includes a large man-made public beach called Orchard Beach, created by Robert Moses. Woodlawn Cemetery, one of the largest cemeteries in New York City, is located near the border with Westchester County. It opened in 1863, at a time when the Bronx was still considered a rural area.

Quote
Demographics

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,332,650 people, 463,212 households, and 314,984 families residing in the borough. The population density was 12,242.2/km² (31,709.3/mi²). There were 490,659 housing units at an average density of 4,507.4/km² (11,674.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 35.64% Black or African American, 29.87% White, 0.85% Native American, 3.01% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 24.74% from other races, and 5.78% from two or more races. 48.38% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 14.5% of the population were Whites, not of Hispanic origins. The Bronx has a higher number of Puerto Ricans than any other county in the United States. It also has one of the highest percentages of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans in the U.S. with 24.0% and 10.0%, respectively. Immigration and Naturalization Service data shows that in 1996, about two-thirds of those Ghanaians visiting the United States (6,269), and nearly three-fourths of those naturalized (3,084), arrived in New York City. Many have clustered in communities in Morris Heights, Highbridge, & Tremont, making Ghana the third most frequent place of origin for immigrants to the Bronx, according to the report.

There were 463,212 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 31.4% were married couples living together, 30.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.37.

In the borough the population was spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 30.7% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 87.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.7 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $27,611, and the median income for a family was $30,682. Males had a median income of $31,178 versus $29,429 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $13,959. About 28.0% of families and 30.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.5% of those under age 18 and 21.3% of those age 65 or over.

Despite the stereotype that the Bronx (Specially South Bronx) is a typical poor urban area of New York City, it is not true of the entire borough. The Bronx has much affordable housing (as compared to most of the rest of the New York metropolitan area, as well as upscale neighborhoods like Riverdale, City Island, Pelham Bay, Woodlawn, and Country Club).

Quote
Culture: from Poe to hip-hop

Author Edgar Allan Poe spent the last years of his life (1846 to 1849) in the Bronx at Poe Cottage, now located at Kingsbridge Road and the Grand Concourse. A small wooden farmhouse built about 1812, the cottage once commanded unobstructed vistas over the rolling Bronx hills to the shores of Long Island.

In recent years, the Bronx has become an important center of African-American culture. Hip hop first emerged in the South Bronx in the early 1970s. Beginning with the advent of beat match DJing, in which Bronx DJs including Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Kool Herc extended the breaks of funk records, a major new musical genre emerged that sought to isolate the percussion breaks of hit funk, disco and soul songs. Newer hip hop artists from the Bronx include Fat Joe, Big Pun, Terror Squad and others. As hip hop's popularity grew, performers began speaking ("rapping") in sync with the beats, and became known as MCs or emcees. The Herculoids, made up of Herc, Coke La Rock, and Clark Kent, were the earliest to gain major fame. The Bronx is referred to in hip-hop slang as "The Boogie Down Bronx", or just "The Boogie Down".The Bronx is home to several Off-Off-Broadway theaters, many staging new works by immigrant playwrights from Latin America and Africa. The Pregones Theater, which produces Latin American work, opened a new 130-seat theater in 2005 on Walton Avenue in the South Bronx. Artists from elsewhere in New York City have begun to converge in the area, and housing prices have nearly quadrupled in the area since 2002.

The Bronx Museum of the Arts, founded in 1971, exhibits 20th-century and contemporary art through its central Museum space and 11,000 square feet of galleries. Many of its exhibitions are on themes of special interest to the Bronx. Its permanent collection features more than 800 works of art, primarily by artists from Africa, Asia and Latin America, including paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, and mixed media. The Museum is temporarily closed in 2006 while it undergoes a major expansion designed by the architectural firm Arquitectonica.

Other major cultural sites in the Bronx include The New York Botanical Garden, the Bronx Zoo, and the Hall of Fame for Great Americans, a national landmark overlooking the Harlem River and designed by the renowned architect Stanford White. Yankee Stadium in the Bronx is the home of the New York Yankees, and houses "Monument Park", a tribute to great Yankees of the past.

In 1997, the Bronx was designated an "All America City" by the National Civic League, signifying its comeback from the destruction of the 1970s.

Quote
The Bronx in the movies

In popular culture the Bronx has often symbolized violence, decay, and urban ruin. In casual French "c'est le Bronx" stands for "what a mess". The wave of arson in the South Bronx in the 1960s and 1970s launched the phrase "the Bronx is burning": in 1974 it was the title of both a New York Times editorial and a BBC documentary film. However, the line entered the pop-consciousness with Game Two of the 1977 World Series, when a fire broke out near Yankee Stadium as the team was playing the Los Angeles Dodgers. As the fire was captured on live television, announcer Howard Cosell intoned, "There it is, ladies and gentlemen: The Bronx is burning". Historians of New York City frequently point to Cosell's remark as a sign of both the city and the borough's descent into anarchy during times of widespread vice. A new feature-length documentary film by Edwin Pagan called "Bronx Burning" is in production in 2006, chronicling what led up to the arson-for-insurance fraud fires of the 1970s and the subsequent rebirth of the community.

These themes have been especially pervasive in representations of the Bronx in cinema. There are good depictions of Bronx gangs in the 1974 novel The Wanderers by Bronx native Richard Price and the 1979 movie of the same name. They are set in the heart of the Bronx, showing apartment life and the then-landmark Krums ice cream parlor. In the 1979 film The Warriors, the eponymous gang go to a meeting in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, and have to fight their way back to Coney Island in Brooklyn. The 2005 video game adaptation features levels called Pelham, Tremont, and "Gunhill" (an apparent corruption of the name Gun Hill Road).

The 1981 film Fort Apache, The Bronx also portrayed the Bronx as gang- and crime-ridden. The film's title is from the nickname for the 41st Police Precinct in the South Bronx. This movie was condemned by community leaders for condoning police brutality, and for unflattering depiction of the borough; former Young Lords member and Puerto Rican activist Richie Perez formed a protest group, "The Committee Against Fort Apache".

More recent cultural references to the Bronx include the 1993 Robert DeNiro/Chazz Palminteri film, A Bronx Tale, the 1995 Jackie Chan film Rumble in the Bronx (Hong faan kui in Cantonese), and "Bronx," the character on the Disney animated series Gargoyles. Spike Lee's 1999 movie Summer of Sam was centered in an Italian-American Bronx community.

Knights of the South Bronx, a true story of a teacher who influences disadvantaged children to move forward, is also set in the Bronx.

Quote
Education

Many prestigious and well-known high schools are also located in the borough including the Bronx Science (my high school  :-\), Walton, Clinton, and the High School of American Studies. Well known parochial high schools include St. Raymond High School for Boys, All Hallows High School, Cardinal Hayes, Cardinal Spellman High School, Fordham Preparatory School, Aquinas High School, Preston, and Mount Saint Michael. The Bronx is home to three of New York City's most elite private schools: Fieldston, Horace Mann, and Riverdale Country School.

If you wanna get more specific, then here's where I live.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastchester%2C_Bronx

Quote
Eastchester, Bronx

Eastchester is a neighborhood in the northeasternmost corner of the New York City borough of the Bronx, containing a predominantly working-class African American and West Indian population. The neighborhood is part of Bronx Community Board 12.

It has the same name as a modern-day town located approximately 5 miles to the north, as the neighborhood was included in the Town of Eastchester's extent until the late 1800s upon annexation by the City of New York. The modern-day city of Mount Vernon, located right across the city line and bordering the Eastchester neighborhood, was also once part of the town. While Mount Vernon has developed along similar lines as the neighborhood of Eastchester, the modern-day Town of Eastchester (i.e. north of Mount Vernon) is markedly more affluent.

233rd Street and Boston Road are the major thoroughfares in Eastchester. Intersecting both of these streets, Dyre Avenue is the neighborhood's main commercial strip.

Auburn was originally incorporated as "Slaughter," named after William Slaughter, who died in an Indian skirmish in 1855. At the time, the main hotel in town was called the "Slaughter House." In 1893, a large group of settlers from Auburn, New York moved to Slaughter, and renamed the town to "Auburn." [1] Due to this history, when Auburn was building its second high school in the mid-1990s, there was a grass-roots effort to name the high school "Slaughter High School," but it was eventually decided that the name would be too politically incorrect, and the High School was named "Auburn Riverside High School," whose mascot is the Raven. There are several locations in Auburn on the National and State Registers of Historic Places, such as the Neely Mansion.

Auburn is where I grew up. I live in Ballard, Seattle, WA.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballard%2C_Seattle%2C_Washington

Quote from: Wiki
Ballard is a neighborhood in Seattle, Washington. Incorporated as an independent city in 1890, it was annexed by Seattle in 1907, but has retained much of its old Scandinavian flavor. Its major landmarks include the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks (usually referred to as the "Ballard Locks" locally), the Nordic Heritage Museum, and Golden Gardens Park. It is bounded by Crown Hill, north of N.W. 85th Street; Phinney Ridge and Fremont, east of 8th Avenue N.W.; Salmon Bay (part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal) to the south; and Shilshole Bay (part of Puget Sound) to the west.

The first homesteader in the area was one Ira Wilcox Utter, who filed his claim in 1852. Thirty-six years later, John Leary, Judge Thomas Burke, and railroader Daniel H. Gilman formed the West Coast Improvement Company to develop Burke's land holdings in the area in anticipation of the coming of the Great Northern Railway, whose tracks would be laid along the Salmon Bay coastline on their way to Interbay and points south. They also had a spur built off the main line of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railroad from Fremont. Three miles (5 km) of this line are now operated as the Ballard Terminal Railroad, which runs along Salmon Bay from N.W. 40th Street to the BNSF Railway mainline at N.W. 67th.

William Rankin Ballard, owner of land adjoining Judge Burke's holdings, subsequently joined Burke, Leary, and Gilman, and took over management of the development, then called Gilman Park. Upon incorporation in 1890, the settlement took Ballard's name, and operated as an independent city for 17 years.

The neighborhood's main thoroughfares are Seaview, 32nd, 24th, Leary, 15th, and 8th Avenues N.W. (north- and southbound), and N.W. Leary Way and N.W. 85th, 80th, 65th, and Market Streets (east- and westbound). The Ballard Bridge carries 15th Avenue over Salmon Bay to Interbay, and the Salmon Bay Bridge carries the BNSF Railway tracks over the bay, west of the locks.

Ballard is the traditional center of Seattle's ethnically Scandinavian seafaring community, although in recent years the decline of the fishing industry and gentrification have both made inroads into the actual demographics. For years, Ballard remained a cliché in local humor, especially its reputation for overly cautious, elderly drivers. The Seattle-based comedy show Almost Live! often made reference to Ballard, especially in the recurring "Cops in Ballard" sketch.

Ballard also contains Ballard High School, soon to be the largest in the district.

Ballard Avenue N.W. between N.W. Market Street and N.W. Dock Place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

[edit] A Neighborhood in Transition
Ballard Library
Ballard Library

In the first decade of the 21st century, Ballard emerged as one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Seattle. Its live music scene expanded, with leading venues like the Tractor Tavern (founded 1994) and Mr. Spot's Chai House; the Second Saturday artwalk became a popular and established tradition (although off the radar of local critics and curators); and the restaurant, boutique, and cafe scene exploded. Part of this resurgence of activity was attributable to the rediscovery of in-town neighborhoods that was occurring elsewhere at the same time, part to the growing affluence of Seattle and the region, and part to the attractiveness of Ballard as a community, with its historic district and "the road ends here" geography. The remodel of the historic Bay Theater-the oldest continuously operating movie house west of the Mississippi-from a failing single-screen theater to a well-appointed triplex catalyzed the gentrification of the downtown district, attracting people to Ballard from outside of the area. In 2005, a new library building, designed by architectural firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, was opened as part of the Seattle Public Libraries' "Libraries for All" initiative.

Educationally, Ballard is home to several of the Seattle School District's highest-achieving public schools. Ballard High School, the flagship institution of the community, has undergone a great deal of change since undergoing massive renovation in the late 1990s. Before the renovation, BHS was considered a second-rate school in the district, especially after suffering the gang-related shooting of a female student immediately in front of the school in 1994; the girl who was killed had no gang affiliation.[1] The rejuvenated school is now in demand as students from all over the city seek placement there.

The retail and artistic activity has been accompanied by a real-estate boom. As of early 2007, nearly 20 major condominium/retail projects were underway or just completed within a five-block radius of the downtown Ballard core, potentially adding up to 2500 new households. This growing density is looked at with ambivalence by most of the community, but is inevitable as it had been written into the neighborhood plan created under the administration of Mayor Norm Rice which aimed to reduce suburban sprawl by targeting certain Seattle areas for high-density development. The influx of new residents will undoubtedly create further traffic congestion in the community; the relative lack of mass transit linking Ballard to other Seattle neighborhoods, and scarcity of parking in central Ballard are issues that have not been resolved.

Transit and growth remain the two most contentious issues regionwide, with little strong leadership from local politicians. Exploring many of these challenges on both a community level and civic, is the newly formed nonprofit Sustainable Ballard with the slogan "A Blueprint for EveryTown USA",[2] where neighbors model good foreign policy implemented locally. This fast growing community-wide effort has created many successful projects, among the latest being the Ballard "Get Carbon Neutral" campaign, working toward Ballard becoming the first carbon neutral community in the nation, a goal mentioned in Al Gore's speech at NYU Law School on September 18, 2006.[3] Ballard, an ideal walking and bicycling community, is eagerly working toward relocalization: addressing challenges (climate crisis and global energy descent) by working toward solutions locally.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilkes-Barre

Wilkes-Barre, PA. :)

Quote
Manufacturing and retail remained as Wilkes-Barre's strongest industries, but the city's economy took a major blow from Tropical Storm Agnes in 1972. The storm pushed the Susquehanna River to nearly 41 feet, four feet above the city's levees, and flooded the downtown with nine feet of water. Six people were killed, 25,000 homes and businesses were either damaged or destroyed, and damages were estimated to be $1 billion with President Richard Nixon sending aid to the area.
..and everyone in the area owns a book entitled "The Wrath of Agnes" about how the flood destroyed the city.

Quote
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Wilkes-Barre attempted to repair the damage from Agnes by building a levee system which rises 41 feet and has successfully battled less threatening floods of 1996, 2004, and 2006 with the Army Corps of Engineers praising the quality of the levees. In addition, Wilkes-Barre was attracting new businesses to the city (including the finished construction of the Wyoming Valley Mall and a large downtown Boscov's), though many opted to move to the suburbs. By 2000, Mayor Tom McGroarty earned the city a less than dubious reputation with his handling of the city's fiscal affairs and his confrontational style towards several state and federal officials. Governor Mark Schweiker went so far as to call him "inept." When McGroarty lost the mayoral primary in 2003, Wilkes-Barre was nearly $11 million in debt.
...my dad is a firefighter for the city. Any city employee and anyone close to them can tell you exactly how Tom McGroarty is a terrible asshole of a man. :lol

Census 2000:
The racial makeup of the city was 92.30% White, 5.09% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.53% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.58% of the population.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothenburg

Quote
Gothenburg (Swedish: Göteborg (help·info)) /jœte'b?rj/) is a city and municipality in the province Västergötland on the west-coast of Sweden. As of 2005, the population amounted to 487,000 in the actual city and 879,000 in the metropolitan area making it the second largest city in Sweden, after Stockholm. Gothenburg is also a significant university city in Scandinavia.
The city is situated where the Göta Älv discharges into the Kattegat; the River divides the city in two halves: the upper part located on the island Hisingen. The inlet of Göta Älv is well suited for a harbour, and Gothenburg has expanded its port into becoming the largest among the Nordic countries.

History:
In the 16th and 17th century, the configuration of Sweden's borders made Gothenburg strategically important as the Swedish gateway to the west, lying on the west coast in the narrow area between the territories of Denmark-Norway. After several failed attempts, Gothenburg was successfully founded in 1621, by King Gustavus Adolphus (Gustaf II Adolf). The Gothenburg coat of arms was based on the lion of the coat of arms of Sweden, symbolically holding a shield with the national emblem, the Three Crowns, to defend against its enemies.
In the Treaty of Roskilde (1658) Denmark-Norway ceded the then Danish province Halland, to the south, and the Norwegian province of Bohus County or Bohuslän to the north, leaving Gothenburg in a less exposed position. Gothenburg was able to grow into an important port and trade centre on the west coast.
The architectural layout was designed by Dutch town planners contracted by the Swedish king; the blueprint for the canals of Gothenburg are actually the same as those used for Jakarta.

In the 18th century, fishing was the most important industry. However, in 1731 the Swedish East India Company was founded, and the city flourished due to its foreign trade with highly profitable commercial expeditions to Asian countries.
Quote
Demographics:
Gothenburg, as most Swedish metropolitan areas, has a large immigrant population. According to SCB in 2005, there are 93,965 immigrants resident in Gothenburg, which is about 20% of the population, out of which 10% is from Iran and 9% from Finland. The Iranian population, as well as other immigrants from the Middle East (notably Iraq) and former Yugoslavia, is concentrated in Angered (most notably Bergsjön, Hjällbo and Hammarkullen) and other suburbs in the north east, while other immigrants from Scandinavia, Southern Europe (notably Portugal, Italy and Greece) and Eastern Europe are far less segregated. Frölunda is also known for its larger Chinese population. Other notable East and South East Asian nationalaties are the Thais and the Vietnamese.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jose%2C_CA

San Jose (IPA: [sæn ho??ze?]) is the third-largest city in California, and the tenth-largest in the United States. It is the county seat of Santa Clara County. For the past several years, it has held the title of The Safest Big City in America.[3][4] San Jose is located in Silicon Valley, at the south end of the San Francisco Bay. With a population of 912,332, San Jose is the largest city in Northern California. Once a small farming city, by 1950 San Jose was a magnet for suburban newcomers in new housing developments (1960s to the 1990s) and became a large thriving urban center of Northern California. San Jose is sometimes nicknamed L.A. North which points out its similarity to Los Angeles as of the end of the 20th century.

Brooklyn, NY:

Quote
Brooklyn (named for the Dutch city Breukelen) is one of the five boroughs of New York City. An independent city until its consolidation into New York in 1898, Brooklyn is New York's most populous borough, with nearly 2.5 million residents.[1] If all five boroughs were independent cities, Brooklyn would rank as the third most populous city in the United States, behind Los Angeles and Chicago. Brooklyn is coterminous with Kings County, which is the most populous county in New York State, and the second most densely populated county in the United States (after New York County, which is coterminous with Manhattan)

Brooklyn is so densely populated that a 90x23 foot piece of property (my parent's house) goes for upwards of $700K. :lol
