Like Concord, this is still probably part of the wake of Jim Ryan.  At a time of record inflation, this is the last console that anyone should purchase at this time (at this price at least).  Someone mentioned (elsewhere on the interwebs) that they think Jim Ryan was secretly told to retire to keep shareholders from panicking because the direction he was taking SIE was distinguished mentally-challenged.

Personally, I loathed the thought of the PS4 Pro.  It screams cheap money grab, thinking they can be like cellphones with their planned obsolescence bullshit.  It's literally a half-assed generation leap. Sony makes some of the best hardware still to this day, but this price is just not consumer friendly at all.

Tbh though, if they get enough flak over the price, they may actually drop it some. Then all of a sudden, they'll be the "good guys that listen to their fans" again.. it's a simple marketing tactic, as fake and bullshitty as it can be.

Obviously they were just trying to avoid the FIVE HUNDRED NINETY NINE US DOLLARS meme  :doge

I'm more curious of when we're going to see price drops on hardware now. The base Switch is still $299 7 and a half years later. The PS5 price has gone up in several countries. It's a madhouse.

Another gripe about these mid gen bowlshit entries...  Do these "enhancements" not take away from development time just to cater to more optimization testing?  Didn't Xbox technically try this with the Series S and X already?  Who asks for this shit?

I'm curious if Nintendo dropped a Switch Pro (or 2... whatever) that was equally powerful as a base PS5 for $500, Nintendo folks probably wouldn't bat an eye.

I think the better comparison is PS4Pro and Xbox One X. Those consoles were really for people with 4k TVs to get a res bump and not be stuck with 1080p games. The PS5Pro just the modern version of that i.e. better image and possibly performance for players with money to burn. Nobody made game exclusive versions for Pro or One X(I don't think Sony or MS allowed that), they just got extra pixels where they could. I believe 3rd party devs weren't forced to use the Pro/One X bells and whistles if they didn't want.  With Series S/X, it sounds more like devs create games with Series X specs in mind and then figure out what needs trimmed to get it working on Series S later. It's why something like Baldur's Gate 3 was pushed back and dropped split-screen on Series S, and they were like "Oh shit, this feature doesn't work" towards the end of development.

So you get a cleaner image thanks to the ML and PSSR, maybe better performance, slap a "Pro Enhanced" on the game box and call it a day.  Stuff like Jedi Survivor and Dragon's Dogma 2 might see the biggest difference because those games still run like dogshit and might a more stable performance and better image quality.

I'm interested to see what kind of difference we get on the backcompat side with older games. Shame so many titles are stuck at 30 fps (Okami :().

Besides DD2, The Witcher 3 next-gen update would be the title I'd be really interested to see a Pro version of. The RT mode in that ran in the mid to high 20s on base PS5 a lot of the time and it felt like shit to play compared to the performance mode.

We need someone to come in and replace MS in the console space to compete with Sony. Who is the best to do it?

If not some Chinese or Korean hardware producer (LG, Samsung, whatever), Valve seems to already have an upper hand with the Steamdeck.  It, along with the Legion Go, etc., all seem like prime competitors that prove they have a place in the market.  PCMR folks need to chill and let the casuals in without their chiphead pissing contests and just make things fucking work instantaneously and comfortably.  It wants to get there, but the speed of hardware advancements makes that carrot dangle more for said pissing contests.  Consoles want to do it, but it's just not where it belongs, hence this whole Pro horseshit.

Personally, going the handheld route is a massive selling point for those that want little things in their hands, but it means absolutely nothing to me. I'm sure I'm a minority there, but the ease of use with Big Picture mode started making me, a stubborn console user, a believer that it's the sure fire route to go moving forward with a MUCH more streamlined PC gaming experience.

Just please... for the love of god, hardware makers... Make a good controller that has the bells and whistles that the PS has; headphone jack, haptics, centered analog sticks, classic style d-pad, the works.  How hard can it be?

That being said though, with the largest game library I've ever owned in my life, 10 fold, with PS4&5 combined (currently sitting around 500+), I will for sure be getting a PS6 because of that (assuming it's BC).  That's just the simple reality of it that I can't ignore.  Even when my PS+ sub runs out, I'll still have over 200+ in my library.  But if they up and change the platform, a la PS3->4, and all my library is DOA, I will suck it up, let my PS stuff die out and make a quick, user friendly, couch gaming PC the direction I move forward with.  It will never die.

It's too late in the game for that. The time to buy up dev teams has been the last few years. You need software to justify and support the hardware and MS owns too much of the pie now. Meta is burning billions a quarter on VR bullshit and they're also not trustworthy.

If people are genuinely upset and see this as a signal that the PS6 will be $800, now is the time to build a PC. But that is also expensive and high end GPU prices are fucked so...

If Switch 2 really is the power of the PS4 then Nintendo might be the very competition we need. The problem is that Nintendo and Sony often don't compete with or even acknowledge each other. As two Japanese companies they see to it that the other is doing their own thing. But if we the consumers choose Nintendo and PC over PS we might get a leg on the bastards at Sony.

The hope is that Switch 2 is such a quality product it makes people with only PS4s question why the fuck they should get a PS5 and make Sony bleed, if only a little bit. The good news is Switch 2 might be the most anticipated console since the PS2. This will make things even better. The bad news is that Nintendo has anti-consumer practices themselves.

:aweshum  You can customize the home screen to either PS1, 2, 3, 4 or 30th Anniversary themes.

Stupid that it's only for a limited time..   :comeon
