Punching up/down is an absurd idea on its face, it literally asks you to do a progressive stack for every potential statement on Earth and rework them until the statement is only punching up (or down rather since progressive stacks are supposed to reverse oppression) the stack. It also implicitly disallows any criticism of anyone "lower" on the stack.

You can know it's an absurd theory by looking at the most recent popular case, everyone immediately points to Dave Chappelle's wealth first, it's because they want to erase his being Black to reframe him as punching down to White LGBTQIA+, a fairly wealthy class. Yet nobody criticizing him would actually ever say it's okay for Chappelle to do it if he wasn't rich because what they actually want to do is slide a whole bunch of white people past a Black man without having to overturn the standard progressive stack which traditionally says all Blacks are lower than all whites. They're trying to write in a one-time exception to their ideology for you to only look at this individual's specifics because they deliberately want to place all trans people as permanently hands off. (Certain groups tried to do the same for his "space Jews" joke but it didn't take.)
