Author Topic: Okay, I want to buy a laptop for gaming (Read 1471 times)

I just want to tell you as someone who bought a laptop with gaming in mind that it's not worth it. I got a top of the line (at the time) Alienware Area 51m laptop a few years ago, and it became outdated LIKE THAT. It's also not as easy to upgrade these things, so they can't keep up with desktops. I love this PC and it works great as a desktop replacement, but it's big, bulky, and has laughable battery life. The next laptop I get is going to be something made more with portablity in mind; I found myself rarely ever playing PC games and just sticking to consoles anyway. I think I'm going to get a Macbook Pro; I prefer Mac laptops to PC laptops based on my experiences with them.

Oh, and Alienware screwed everyone that bought this model over-- They said you could upgrade the video card, and then ended up switching their production to new models and dropping all support for this one. :/

Mupepe, may I give you a recommendation? Go with affordability and portability, and find the right mix. If you're determined to play games or find a true desktop replacement, ASUS announced at the last CES that they are going to sell an external video card for laptops called the XG Station. It's upgradable, looks pretty cool and I think it'll make a mean docking station. This way you can play PC games at home, and when you're on the road, you can focus on the real functionality of your laptop - portability, Internet, applications, music/video, 2D games, etc.

Just my two cents.

You can get a small laptop with a good graphics card if you have the money.

just wait it out for a bit and when the next wave of laptops comes out pick something up. dont focus on gaming it realy isnt feasable. that external asus thing will be awesome to have at a base. but gaming on a laptop is shit.

I hate that you have to use Stardocks apps just to use the .Dream files. I guess the Dream Maker? App for making .Dream files needs the extension or something? I wish Microsoft had it kept within the OS instead of going to 3rd party software.

What are your "needs?" Why do you want a laptop for gaming...what types of games are interested in?

I'm pretty much into RTS and FPS games for PC. Sim games are kind of dead, so that doesn't even matter now.

It will. ASUS said you'll be able to purchase them later this year, had working models at CES, but gave no price. The latter is the real question mark.

i'm gonna start saving up for a laptop since i can do work on the go (pending wireless access). should be a nice priced laptop by then, not that interested in gaming, though. i'll carry my PSP homebrew and such on there so i can easily access it.
