Because tanning involves going out in the sun. Being pale has negative health connotations.
Tan vs. nerd-pale actually says a lot about a person's personality, rather than being something they are born with and trying to look less ethnic. The same issue happens in Africa.

Sure it does.
The method for people to become pale/tan is independent of the implications of each side, but arose because we associate such ideas with it.
But become whiter is a bit less baseless. That's why it's offsetting. It's something you are born with, not a symptom of your work ethic.
Kind of like dying/bleaching your hair.

And being pale and constantly tanning has negative health conditions. I'm tired of white girls with pale skin(that is rather blemish free and smooth) who insist on tanning. They come out looking like a croissant in a wig, because their hair and features no longer match their skin. And they over expose themselves to rays they have less natural protection against.

But people do it. And if people want to lighten their skin then I don't see why one person can reject their natural essence while another can't.
