I had to attend a Rape Prevention class, issued as mandatory to every student. The whole approach and some of the handling of the issue is pathetic.
Main problems I saw
-Avoiding the real, complex issue of current sexual-social interactions.
-Dividing males into rapists and self-loathing feminists, with no middle ground.
-No addressing of dress and behavior. All sorts of girls are raped. A girl dressed to aspire sexual thoughts hanging out with drunken overly hormonal men is putting themselves in danger. Instead of talking of this, they talk as though every male is a rapist. Which I can understand is to make sure you are safe at all times. But that gets to a problematic way of thinking, which gets to
-If a girl has gotten herself drunk out of her mind and the male has sex with her, then that counts as rape. It is certainly immoral, and certainly taking advantage of the person, but the person chooses to lose self control, and those that choose to lose self control know they are choosing this.
-And they use cheesey videos and educational skits to talk about the subject. Nothing says "ignore my out of touch ass" more than educational skits.
The issue is far more complex than it is treated, but it is made to go under simple rules to protect the victim. Unfortunately, this is a social problem. It's not just the rapists to blame, its not just the girl getting herself into bad situations, but its a whole community that proliferates a doomed social atmosphere. The deal with the expectation of male sexual conquest fighting against the shame of male sexuality is just plain fucking bad.
