Only a week after his mother's death, Kanye West returned to the concert stage Saturday night in Paris, only to dramatically break down in tears, audience members tell PEOPLE.

Nearing the end of the more than 60-minute performance, with the riff of "Hey Mama" beginning, West attempted to introduce the tribute to a sold-out crowd at Le Zénith in Paris, saying "this song is for my mother...." and could get no further.

"He just cracked," one attendee tells PEOPLE, "He was at the end of his concert and had just started to dedicate the song and then he just lost it completely."

"He said the word, 'Mother' and just couldn't go any further," Le Parisien journalist Meddy Magloire said. "A back-up singer, the DJ and a guitar player came over to console him. It looked like he might collapse. He just couldn't continue. He just stood there in a spotlight, crying while the band continued playing."

After a few moments of stunned silence, Magloire says, the audience of 5,000 reacted by offering calls of encouragement, which grew into applause.

The band restarted the song, but West left the stage, returning after 10-15 minutes to conclude the concert with a rousing performance of "Stronger."

"He was very nervous, seemed to have gathered himself up, and had a lot of energy," Magloire says. "He kept shouting out to the audience, 'I need you... I need you right now.' and the public was screaming back. It was magic."

Surprise Appearance
West had been reclusive since death of his mother. He cancelled a Victoria's Secrets performance on Thursday and was not at the memorial for her in Chicago on Friday.

His arrival in Paris at the Hotel Le Meurice on Friday, accompanied by fiancée Alexis Phifer and her son, was unexpected, coming just hours after another scheduled concert set for Monday in Amsterdam was officially cancelled.

West is scheduled to perform in Brussels on Sunday night. It's now expected he will return to the United States for his mother's funeral in Oklahoma City on Tuesday afternoon before returning to Europe to perform in London on Thursday.

It would be pretty funny if it turned out that the plastic surgery she got was a birthday gift from Kanye.  That would mean he basically killed his mom.

Punky Brewster got that done too.  I have moral objections to that particular procedure.

Hitler: The guy was under a lot of stress, you know? I mean, he was looking after not only Germany's interests, but a bunch of neighboring countries, too. You can hardly expect one man to deal with that on his own without breaking.  And if you read Mein Kampf you can see that he had people's best interests at heart, he may just have gone about implementing them the wrong way. It's possible that the Jews said something about his artwork that really set him off--everyone knows that Hitler was a pretty sensitive guy. I'm aware that the US military is reporting death camps being discovered all over Germany, but I've known Adolf since 1935 and I just can't see him as a psychotic mass murderer. He was always such an inspiring speaker and gave such great parades. I cried myself to sleep last night just thinking about it.

You're a fucking joke, FoC.  Islam, by its tenets, is a religion of peace.  It's the people that have corrupted the rules to fit their own political agendas.  It's absolutely no different than those pre-schism popes contorting and twisting Christianity in the medieval ages.

The Qur'an teaches multiple times that "people of the book," aka Christians and Jews, are brothers and followers of the same god.  It's a similar viewpoint, if not exactly the same, as the view that Christians have of Jews, aka, they basically follow the same things, they just don't accept all the same texts as from god; it would be cool if they did, but we won't hold it against them.

The aggression and violence between the religions is not about religious, but the preceding thousand years of interaction, political, between the three.  Christians invading the holy land, taking over Jerusalem, where they literally made the streets run red with blood by murdering every inhabitant of Jerusalm, mainly Muslims, every man woman and child.  Historical records of the time indicate that the blood ran ankle deep.

And then later on Muslims had their time in Europe, too.  Nobody is totally innocent when it comes to the political iniquities of the interactions of the religions, at all.

What's important and responsible for us is to make sure that we know why these mistakes in history happened, so we don't be dumbasses that contribute to this mindless, perpetual violence.  Me nor you will ever be big enough to have an effect on the conflict, but we can do all a service by trying to educate those that hold incorrect, jingoistic views.

There's idiocy on both sides; the most responsible thing is not to contribute to it.  Please educate yourself.

Brilliant post; fair and accurate. Having lived around religious people for 20 years I've been quite disappointed with the lack of understanding and total disregard for history many have - especially with respect to Islam. Islam and Christianity share many basic beliefs in terms of charity, and both religions are connected historically through numerous references in both the bible and koran.

A couple years ago I went to a conference in Chicago, and while there I attended a study on Islam held by a well respected pastor in our little denomination or whatever you want to call it. The pastor began the session by saying he had been reading the koran for a couple months, and had come to some dangerous conclusions. Right there a red flag went up; within "a couple" months he felt he was knowledgeable enough to make broad generalizations and comments about the entire religion, and its alleged emphasis on violence. This was especially ironic considering this particular group is filled with members who read the bible "wrong" for years before coming to the truth. Yet it took 2 months to dissect the koran? Whatever.

Not to sound like my usual I Hate America self (even though I do), for how much attention is paid to the middle east conflict by the media, it's really tragic that the US education system is a total and complete failure at trying to explain the situation to young people.

It's not even a particularly complicated situation to explain fairly.  I mean, the elements at play are very complicated when it comes to addressing them and solving the problem, but they are not difficult to understand.  If there is one thing that shows that the US is a Christian Nation, it's not that the founding fathers came here for religion, or anything like that; it's because Islam is absolutely absent from any state-mandated education.  You can go from k to 12 in public schools not even knowing that Islam is comparable in membership, size, and importance in world history, to Christianity.  Why is it so absent from state-mandated education?  Good question.  I wish I could give you an answer that wasn't shameful and embarassing in some way.

Not only is it laughable that Islam is excluded due to its role in history, but disregarding it's influence when it comes to education and the science is absolutely stultifying.  If it wasn't for Islam, it's arguable that it would have been much longer before literacy was available to the masses.  It was only because of the public's illiteracy that the crusades were able to go on for so long unabated.

Fuck, the state isn't even required to teach about Saladin in US schools, and he is easily one of the most important figures in history.  Arguably more important than any of the Caesars; definitely more important when it comes to relevance in today's world.  Of course, I bet most Islamic schools teach perspectives of history that are just as incomplete if not more.  But I expect a bit more from the US, being what people claim is the greatest country in the world, and all.

Not to denigrate the treatment of slavery in the educational system (I agree, it is not represented well enough), but the "coolies" are even less represented in state-mandated history.  You see references to asians building the railroads and shit, but nobody, and I repeat NOBODY knows the full story there.  In some ways (again, no denigration) their story is even worse than slavery, since it happened post-"emancipation."

The US education system is basically a failure on any account, considering that We Invented the First World.  Science, history, all terrible and standardless.  I'm shocked how much "Essential" stuff I have learned with since growing up.  That "system" was supposed to prepare me for the world?  They basically want us to be uneducated.  Uneducated is how they leave us when we are dumped in the real world.

Eh, I'm not touching that tonight.

I'm not a product of the public school system, although I'm certainly not bragging about that. I benefited from having parents who went beyond curriculum to ensure I understood certain subjects like slavery and civil rights from a young age. In my Christian homeschool history book the civil rights era was essentially ignored outside of MLK, while Malcolm X is essentially branded a terrorist; interestingly, the "rock n drugs" movement was covered more extensively in the books. Luckily my mom was able to catch that and mold me through better sources - including her own stories. She lived in Detroit in 68 and saw the tanks rolling past her house. Sadly there are many black kids who don't have the privileges that I've had, and don't know much about their history.

After homeschool I essentially went to college in the 10th grade, and then I had even more access to the periods of history ignored in highschool. I can understand why something like slavery or the Crusades wouldn't be dwelled upon in 7th grade, but there's no excuse for teachers not discussing these things in highschool

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to say "Slavery wasn't THAT bad," I'm just saying that the "coolies" thing being totally ignored by school history books is terrible.  The way school history books have it written, it's like things were bad for a few years after the civil war, and then nobody in the US ever exploited anyone ever again.

Sorry if I came off a bit flippant there.  It's almost bedtime and I am tired.

Nah, you're way smarter than me so of course I'm not misreading you like that. While the exploitation in general was definitely a dark chapter of this country's history, slavery is the darkest. When you consider the complete desolation of a continent's youth and the murder of countless millions nothing else in American history compares outside of the genocide of the Native American.

But I will agree that with respect to in American schools, slavery is often mentioned at the least - the railroad exploitations are not talked about at all. Most people are familiar with the idea of railroads being built by asians, but it's usually in a stereotypical connotation ("lol asians built the railroads").

America's unparalleled power has nothing to do with being "God's favorite country" and everything to do with a historical record of genocide and hundreds of years of exploitation of people. And I'm definitely not the type to "bash" my country. That's not bashing, just history

I find the failure of the education system, particularly in regards to history, as totally hilarious, since int he US, you never fail to hear that aphorism about those that do not study history being doomed to repeat it.  The US educational system would have you believe that it leaves people off at age 18, ready to face the world, when it doesn't even cover a fraction of important, relevant history.  The government mandates that students know like, one fact about each US president, no matter how useless, but the unknown slavery of asian peoples in the US?  Nah, not important.  NOW TELL US WHO THE FATTEST PRESIDENT WAS! THAT'S RELEVANT!

In many ways, the story of the asians building the railroads is truly horrifying.  I've read history books on the building of the railroad that talk about how asians were hired to build particular sections of a railroad, and then when their job was done, they were killed and buried out in the desert or the plains, then a new group of asians was hired to build the next section, and once they were done their fate was the same as the previous group, and so on, and so on.

Woooah wtf?

I learned more about Islam than all other religions combined in my history classes.  Christianity and Jesus had like the first line of one paragraph. Meanwhile most of my 7th grade history was devoted to Islam, Muhammad and his influence on the world at the time. I remember we watched a movie about Muhammad, talked about the Qur'an and even had an ethnic potluck where the kids had to bring some traditional islamic dishes. It was a total cultural induction.

Woooah wtf?

I checked the GAF X360 leaderboard thread, I'm on top of the NFS Carbon and Sega Rally leaderboards. They didn't add NFS ProStreet yet, I'd probably top that one, too.  :lol

In order to actually learn a thing, you have to go out of your way. Reading TVC's post really brings some insight, because I know jack shit about Islam's contributions to the world. They haven't even gone over them in my college religion class (wtf)

You will learn something, but you have to mostly go out of your way to. For example, there are some classes in college that are strictly for people like us, that want to know the whole truth. They'll sometimes be labeled as more advanced or whatever. My history classes always examined all the things they never told you about in High School, like Christopher Columbus turning natives into sex slaves, and how that one group of people in the american colonies (I forgot) based their entire social structure around sexual activities. Of course, they don't go over ALL the stuff they don't want you to learn about, but you learn a good deal.

Still, most of the stuff you will learn from college will be outside of class. Go to the library and get some books.

Yeah, sadly, you are the exception.  You grew up in CA, though (right?), where it is likely less possible to go through the public educational system without any sort of diversification.  Fact is that the stuff you learned isn't mandatory by US public schooling standards. . .which are a total joke.
