The article sucks because it assumes that the Wii and the NES are the only machines that managed to target casuals. I agree for the most part. But Sony is also trying to sell big TV's and MS is on it's 2nd attempt to get hooked up in the living room.

Are big TVs driving the HD console market or is it the other way around?

The HD console sales are pretty sluggish overall. I don't know how many new HDTV adopters are picking up a 360 or a PS3 along with their TVs or if it is just former Xbox and PlayStation 2 owners getting upgraded TVs and systems. It doesn't seem like too many but this generation is still in the early stages. I think both Microsoft and Sony expected far better performances, sales wise, and hitched their future to the HD market, especially Sony. Fortunately, Bluray turned out to "win" the HD disc wars.

I think the idea was that HDTV purchases are to drive the HD console market, in addition to previous supporters of Xbox and PlayStation.
