I know that but thought it would be distinguished mentally-challenged to give a shit about spelling it the same as anything when it's a nickname.

I'd crop Scorsese down to Taxi Driver,

So. . is he one of your favorite directors, or not?  This isn't the "be as elitist as you possibly can" thread.  I'm making that one.  Someday.

I'd say hes a very talented director that chooses content that has little to no appeal to me.  He's enamored with the anti-hero that accomplishes nothing with his life.  I have been entertained by him, I own a lot of his movies for some reason, but I can't say I ever get the urge to watch one of his movies more than once, save taxi driver, which redeems itself with its ridiculousness.  His characters are awful.  I put Tarantino, Mann, and Scorsese all in the same league because I see them all in pretty much the same light, talented editors and composers in love with mediocre themes, and pretty cinematography.  That puts them above 95% of Hollywood shit, but doesn't make them great artists in my mind.

I guess I was just padding the list by the end there.  I don't have a clue who directs most of the movies I like, and I really wouldn't care to.  I only remember the ones that are constantly forced down your throat.

You'd have to be pretty damn distinguished mentally-challenged to think Indie movies are fun, and coming from me that's a big insult.
Except it is one of the most popular and beloved film franchises of all time. So basically most film fans here are "damn distinguished mentally-challenged"?

Richard Donner is solid, but he isn't that great.  If you want to talk about action movie directors, John McTiernan did PREDATOR, THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and DIE HARD.  You don't get any better than that.

And Assassins sucked.

Surprisingly, I agree with most choices in this thread.  I really don't know how that's possible.

Here's one no one has mentioned thus far - Howard Hawks.  Guy was pretty much a genius in multiple genres:

Scarface
Bringing Up Baby
Only Angels Have Wings
His Girl Friday
Sergeant York
To Have And Have Not
The Big Sleep
Red River
The Thing From Another World
Rio Bravo

etc.

Like I needed more reasons...

Also, no Carpenter love here?

Sure, his output is spotty and riddled with low budget duds, but how can you deny:

Halloween
The Thing
The Fog
Christine
Prince Of Darkness
Big Trouble In Little China
They Live

Kill Bill was terrible.  I could make the same flick just by cutting and pasting all the original movie scenes Tarantino ripped off to make it.  ::)

Kill fucking Bill 1 and 2 -- two terrible fucking movies for anyone but the biggest and flabbiest of Asian XXXTreme cinema nerds.

I'm not an Asian XXXTreme cinema nerd.  If you knew anything about my taste in movies, you'd know they run more towards Italian movies.  Your trolling has proven ineffective. :P

I watched some of Rashomon last night, using the TV Links site. Didn't watch it all (I was dead tired) but what I saw was very good. I didn't know anything about the movie going in, so I expected it to be some samauri movie. But what I've seen so far is more of a suspense movie or something.

One thing I really liked was the cinematography. There's a part where the alleged killer is walking through the woods, and nearly every shot is from a cool angle or does something interesting. I'll watch the rest tomorrow

I like Kurosawa for his cinematography, vision, and just the way he blocks scenes for films in general, but his films *do* drag. I also like Hitchcock and Welles, but of the two, I can only really watch Hitchcock again and again.

I'm not a big fan of Wes Anderson -- he's too uneven and, dare I say it, masturbatory. I loved Rushmore and liked Bottle Rocket, but The Life Aquatic and The Royal Tenenbaums really meandered, largely in the name of packing in EXTRA QUIRKY for YOUR CINEMA DOLLAR.

I'm not a huge Scorsese fan. I liked Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, but I can pass on the rest. Same with Gilliam: he's too uneven -- he has some killer works like Brasil, and some turds like The Brothers Grimm.

Tarantino is a one-trick pony (although he's good at that one trick) -- he's Kevin Smith for the teenaged grindhouse cinema set. Now that I think about it, it's unfair to call The Life Aquatic masturbatory when we have Kill fucking Bill 1 and 2 -- two terrible fucking movies for anyone but the biggest and flabbiest of Asian XXXTreme cinema nerds. Pulp Fiction was great, Jackie Brown was good, and Reservoir Dogs was awkward. I hold out hope for Death Proof based on folks' positive assessment of it -- although the fact that it is dialogue-heavy worries me, since I really had my fill of his brand of edgy snark with, well, ALL OF HIS PREVIOUS MOVIES WITH THE IRONIC EXCEPTION OF KILL BILL.

Spielberg sucks.
Pretty much agreed on these points. Also I'll add that Francis Ford Coppola is a great director (Godfather  :bow) but his daughter is overrated trash. Also Clint Eastwood sucks.

McTiernan is a better action director but as a DIRECTOR I think Richard Donner would rank higher on a list. Plus he is damn cool. A top ten director for me? No. But he'd rank higher than McTiernan (Die Hard>>>>>>>>>>>>Lethal Weapon, but that is meaningless)

I fucking love Edgar Wright (can't believe I beat demi to it) and Paul Thomas Anderson, even though Magnolia was probably the worst flick I've ever sat through.

And I would like to add Belladonna & Avy Scott to my previously mentioned director list.  :-[ Ladies, represent.
