I own dozens and dozens of them.  Renting is for dirty poors.  And I don't buy them for the spine numbers.  I am sure if there were some crapajapamu on CC, you would be squirtin' all over them.

I buy the occasional CC set, but they're too expensive for me to blindly purchase.  Not that I've ever seen a bad Criterion that wasn't called "Armageddon," but I've seen enough that I didn't think warranted dropping $30 - $50 on.

I'd much rather take my $30 to Best Buy or Circuit City and dig through all the $5 shit that's worth owning in their weekly sales.

Criterion released Akira on Laser Disc, actually.

Bandai Visual is bringing Wings of Honneamise to Blu-Ray on September 11th, and Akira is coming soon, but they haven't settled on a specific date yet.

If they catered to my comparatively plebeian tastes, I might purchase more.  When they switched from Laserdisc to DVDs, they became much more arthouse snobbish.  Not their fault, though; the major studios refused to license their movies after they realized DVD was such a cash cow.

I appreciate the switch.  I'd rather them going for off-kilter foreign stuff like Mysteries of the Organism and Sweet Movie and Man Bites Dog rather than Armageddon, for example.  Whenever they need a surefire money making movie, they can just reissue an old Janus classic, like a Kurosawa or Godard flick.

I don't think they can get away with another round of Kurosawa reissues.  At least not until they go HD, which isn't in the cards just yet.

I appreciate the switch.  I'd rather them going for off-kilter foreign stuff like Mysteries of the Organism and Sweet Movie and Man Bites Dog rather than Armageddon, for example.  Whenever they need a surefire money making movie, they can just reissue an old Janus classic, like a Kurosawa or Godard flick.

I can appreciate the niche they've carved out for themselves, and the care and attention to detail they give to the film transfers is, for the most part, unrivaled.  There are some fine films I've seen merely because they were released by Criterion, and that I probably wouldn't have bothered to watch otherwise.  But sometimes I sit and ponder what the world would be like if something such as the Criterion Collection Shaun of the Dead actually existed.

Using Netflix has actually become a very trendy way to enjoy movies. Sometimes, movies are so mediocre that one'd feel ashamed to give some form of patronage to them, regardlessly of his income.

What's the big deal about owning a collection of movies anyway? It makes people feel safer? Most everything gets devalued over time anyway. It's cumbersome to manage, and makes you a target for theft.

All the DVDs I own, they're to be given to someone else when I move out again in August. I'm not taking a single original movie or game along, save for Virtua Fighter 5, and that's only because I want to use the Virtua Stick with Sanwa parts and it's only for PS3.

I don't own a single Blu-Ray or HD-DVD other than the titles that came bundled with the hardware, and will probably never purchase any.

Unfortunately, none of these movies feature non-consenual sex or characters getting their heads wedged wackily between chick's boobs, so they will be of little interest to Jotaro.

What's the big deal about owning a collection of movies?  I like stories.  I like movies.  I'm something of an enthusiast when it comes to both.
