You may not think you need culture but if you're not taking policies in the Rationalism tree you're going to get screwed on tech.

Bullshit term. It's not a real thing.

What does paint thinner taste like?
It pretty darn tasty if you ask me. It's especially good if you find gasoline and diesel a little too thick and harsh. Many people, including yours truly, do drink diesel instead of the traditional and harshly acidic orange juice everyday with breakfast. That with cheerios and mineral spirits is an excellent way to start a productive day. Some say all that refined petroleum is hard on the liver so if that worries you it may be a good idea to stick with natural solvents like turpentine. It's also prudent to avoid mixing solvents with alcohol although they sure do make some yummy cocktails.
Paint thinner is really diluted and bland tasting to my palette; mostly I drink it as a water replacement when I'm exercising at the gym. Remember you have to drink twice as much as you would water. About a gallon and a half a day. I find safeways select brand to be the most refreshing.
I don't recommend mineral spirits for cooking-generally speaking, Venetian turpentine is my go to solvent for a nice roux or light sauce. It's a syruppy solvent and makes a fantastic black roux and a terrific risotto with beef tongue and diced kidney. Mmmm. Making me hungry.
I do use paint thinner for iced tea and lemonade for a simply delicious Arnold Palmer. That paired with a BLT with diesel mayo and fries deep fried in 10w30 motor oil is one of the best ways I can thknk of to relax and settle bets after a morning round of golf at the club.
So I hope this helped. I wrote a book titled ‘Now You're Cooking with Gas!!’ It's a valuable resource for anyone interested in a more in depth introduction to the wonderful world of a life free from plain old water including recipes and lifestyle solutions to water dependence using the myriad petroleum products and natural solvents available to us everyday.

In Civ VI you literally cannot advance in technology without producing culture and this curly feller is out here wanting to cancel production completely. ::)

In a court of law this would be known as 'leading the witness'. It is phrased in a way that Chomsky is inevitably going to agree with to some extent. He is going to agree with it because he has said that is what happens. Does Chomsky believe the right use certain tactics to delegitimise the left? Yes. Does Chomsky believe in the sentiment of the letter he signed? It's a different question. Because he believes the former, does not automatically mean he does not think there is a section of the left with authoritarian and censorious tendencies. The two can be true at the same time.
I will also point out that Glenn Greenwald knows Chomsky personally. You could say Chomsky has been somewhat of a mentor to Greenwald.

I like that "The Letter" has taken on a mythical quality, like "The Secret", "The Decision", and "The Look". :bobby

Jerry signing The Letter would be an episode in a Seinfeld reboot.

Shosta, why don't you actually say what you're thinking.

What I'm thinking is that your brain is beautiful. I just want to pick it up and run my fingers ever so gently over the smooth and lustrous exterior.

Please stop posting words in this thread... this is not the thread for words

When you sign an open letter, the implication is generally that you endorse its content. Doubly so if it's designed to be run by the media and provoke some public debate.
-
What I'm thinking is that your brain is beautiful. I just want to pick it up and run my fingers ever so gently over the smooth and lustrous exterior.
In other words, you don't actually want to commit to saying anything. You're never wrong that way.
-
When you sign an open letter that will be run very publically, the implication is generally that you endorse its content.
It is. And the argument would then be that Chomsky never actually read or understood the context of the letter he signed. Which for someone like Chomsky, seems unlikely.

Can’t believe it took this long to understand how online discourse works.

Why type out long ass careposts no one really reads or engages with anyway, if you get the same results by posting

But falling for a cheap rhetorical trap is? So now we flip a coin on whether he misunderstood the letter or the email.

Possibly. Or maybe he misunderstood neither. And that's the thing. The letter refers to a lecture Chomsky did in which he stated that the right resort to 'hysterics' to delegitimise specific groups. He then goes on to ask whether he still believes they are doing it now. To which Chomsky replied, 'it is happening from Trump down'.
The problem with the argument you're making, or at least the way I perceive it, is it seems like you're saying there is no room for nuance. That if you believe the right use arguments about political correctness to delegitimise their opponents, then that must mean he automatically believes everything the left does is perfectly legitimate. That everything is a zero sum game.
There's something else I know. I'm not sure if you're aware that there was another letter circulating around the same time as the Harper's letter. It was a letter attempting to get Steven Pinker 'cancelled'. Chomsky stated he did not sign this letter and explained his reasons why.
Someone asked him about why he didn't sign this letter. He replied with this:
You notice this response is very nuanced.
Here's the thing: The person who wrote to Chomsky about the Harper's letter could have asked him directly what the reason was for him signing the letter instead of doing it in such a roundabout way. I'm sure Chomsky would have given him a reason. He instead wrote about a lecture Chomsky done and basically asked him if he still agreed with that now. And Chomsky seemed to agree. Of course it was a safe bet Chomsky would agree when framed in that way.

Hmmm tried reading that Leadbelly post but could not force the words to stick together in any sensible pattern. . maybe this unlearning language thing is working

No, I'm just poking a finger at what looks like a contradiction. The reason it looks like what you're thinking is because I didn't even read the email he was replying to.
Don't write long careposts in response to lazy reparteé, wrap a salient point into a 'dunk' and yuk along. None of this shit matters.

"time to write some bigass careposts" thought leadbelly, confident he had gauged the tone and tenor of the thread

This is all described in detail in Mandark’s Big Book of Cowardice. I recommend not giving it a read.
