Ecro, Drinky HELP! Laptop dying fast!
« on: November 17, 2007, 04:51:29 PM »
It keeps on crashing to the blue screen of death and windows explorer is volatile - as in it shuts down when ever I go into folders with a large number of files in it and it shuts down as soon as I select anything off of the start button.  I'm pritty sure its a memory problem but I don't know if its a physical problem or a program problem.

I think what caused it was I was trying to uninstall C++ express and it said it was coping a bunch of files to my temporary files then froze up the whole computer - forcing me to hardboot it.

I'll upload pics of some of the error messages if it doesn't die in the process.

I was going to use the dell restore (as they didn't give me the operating system disks) to try and reinstall everything?  Is that a good idea or will it just make shit worse.

what os
what's the manufacturer/make/model

chances are you blew away a key dll in system32 or installed a really bum kernel driver. if you think it is your memory, download and install http://hcidesign.com/memtest/download.html or http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

8021xConfig sounds like a certificate authentication module. weird. shouldn't cause a blue screen.

update: i am wrong. it refers to 1xconfig, a shuttle/scm systray device: http://www.pcpitstop.com/spycheck/SWDetail.asp?fn=1XConfig.exe

http://blogs.msdn.com/nikhil/archive/2007/02/09/debugging-handle-leaks.aspx

you need to remove 1XConfig.exe; it gets rogue with the handles

I've downloaded the memory thing.  It says to let it run for 20 mins.  so if the pc stays on long enough, i'll do it and get back to this thread.

Thanks BTW.

It sounds like a software problem since you got BSODs right after installing C++.  Did you try going into safe mode and do a system restore?  I'll try that before reinstalling Windows completely.

In particular, one program caught my eye - 1xConfig.exe. It had been holding more than 45,000 handles and the number was steadily increasing. I hadn’t shut down my laptop in a fairly long time and had been just hibernating it all this while, but that was no excuse for that process hogging resources like crazy. To give some perspective, Internet Explorer maintained only around 1000-2000 handles. Clearly, 1xConfig was holding on to more handles than it needed - its a major handle leak!

A quick search on the internet revealed that the program is part of the software that comes with Intel Pro Wireless Adapter. Some of the sites also mentioned about the handle leaks! I killed the process and everything still seemed to work alright.

Now I had to fix this somehow, because I knew it's going to again start hogging handles on system restart. I went to Dell's website to download an update of the Intel Wireleess Pro software. I have just installed it. Installation was quite seamless and did not require me to restart the computer. It has not launched the 1xConfig.exe process yet, but there is a dot1xcfg.exe, which might be a replacement for it.

A very simple technique, yet fairly powerful results!

download the latest intel pro wireless drivers

What kind of hardware do Shuttle and SCM MicroSystems make? like what would I have no here that would use that 8021XConfig Module?

Edit:  OK.  I'll try and install the new drivers after this memory test.

i had to dig a little deeper -- it's not shuttle/scm, it's intel, and their pro wireless drivers in particular. shuttle and scm just wrap them up into their systray service. you will be fixed when your process list does NOT contain "1xconfig.exe" and contains "dot1xcfg.exe" instead.

So, while we are talking about computer shit:

Is there anyway to get around this KeyAccess KeyServer program? I'm trying to use Final Draft and it's not letting me because I'm not on campus, and it's pissing me the fuck off because I came to this coffee shop specifically to work on my screenplay.

i'm pretty sure it's not your memory. go ahead and abort it, and re-run it ONLY if your problems continue after you clean out the old intel pro wireless drivers and install the latest ones. at that point, i'd simply re-install if the blue screens continue.

Ok I have the new driver installed.  Hopefully this works.

Thank you very much.

I've been wanting to reinstall windows for a few months now - even before this problem - just for a clean start.  If I do, I will have to update the driver again right?

you can get somewhat of a clean system file "reinstall" by booting to the windows disk.  Go through just like you are doing a full reinstall.  It will search for previous windows installs.  Once it finds one you will get a chance to use "R" for repair.  If it goes on to using a partition STOP.  This fixes a lot of BSOD's.  Sometimes windows gets jacked up when it isn't shut down correctly or when installs/unistalls go bad.  Other than, try to reinstall C++ and then uninstall it.

So I installed the new driver, but I have no way of shutting of the pc because windows explorer is still fucked, so I hard booted and now the driver seems to be back to the old one.

Is there a way to shut off the pc without using the start menu?

Most PCs would shut off if you hold the power button for longer than 4 secs.  Also, you can press ctrl, alt, del and then select shutdown or restart from task manager.

FUCKING DELL

This system restore disk is just one they had me burn when I got the laptop - as I guess buying their own cd would just cost too much.

anyways now when I try and use it it asks for the windows product key which I don't have.

What should I do?

It however did not give me a bunch of the dell software back like, quickset  :'(  O well at least now I'll be rid of that god awful dell help stuff.

Thanks again Drinky.

If that problem still bothers you, you might want to reformat the HD before reinstalling again.  My suggestion:  get Vista, the best OS ever.

Sorry I'm coming into this thread so late into the game.

http://support.dell.com will have quickset and all the drivers for your hardware. Choose the Drivers and Downloads section, and then select your computer. Quickset will be in the Applications section.

As no one is on.  I'm going to try and take the laptop apart and see if I can see anything physically wrong.  as it seems to shut off more often when I move it that when its still.

EDIT:  been jigling it around and its still on.  there goes that idea.

I'm kinda too lazy right now to look into the BSOD you're getting, but have you tried using something like SeaTools to see if your hard drive is dying?

It's Seagate's free hard drive diagnostic utility. It'll work even if the drive isn't a Seagate drive:

Back!  :)

It died as after I can the tests which all came back as failing.  So took it in, which took a fricken week to do and not only that but they couldn't get me a 160 gig so I had to take a 120 also they charged me $25 for "installing the hard drive" which, correct me if I'm wrong, is essentially just unscrewing the old one, popping it out and putting in the new one right?

They were going to charge me $120 to "set it back up"  IE putting in the windows disk and fallowing the directions.   :maf

Anyways thanks Ecro, Drinky, and smooth.  Now onto two weeks of 1up yours
