The Amazing Spiderman

Did a mid-week evening at the movies and saw this.  It was actually pretty good!  I liked it more than the 3 Raimi Spidermans.  Raimi Spiderman was enjoyable but it always felt off.  I disliked his picks for most of the actors and the movies always felt too cheesy and ridiculous.  I thought this one worked better because of two things: The script & The actors.  The script was intelligent for a superhero movie.  Everything felt fairly realistic, flowed well, and the lines were good without being cheesy.  And then the actors were GREAT.  Garfield is THE BEST PETER PARKER EVER.  He's so perfect for the role.  Makes the Toby Maguire spiderman look even dumber.  Emma Stone was great and the guy who played Dr. Conners did a very good job as well.  Because this trio gave good performances and good delivery of a non-stupid script, the movie was good!

Also, like I'm noticing in a lot of superhero origin movies, the first half origin story is notably better than the 2nd half VS. VILLAIN story.  I think in this case it was especially noticeable because Garfield did such a great Peter Parker that was really fun watching him discover his powers and learn to use them as Spiderman.  He definitely makes a better Peter Parker than Spiderman.  Spiderman still needs a bit more wise cracking in his movies.

But overall, nice movie.  I think I will enjoy the next ones with this cast as long as the scripts are good.

???

ASM had the most wise cracking spider-man on film to date. I think it's the opposite: better Spider-Man than Peter. Playing games in the sewer while waiting for the Lizard is totally something Spider-Man would do.

I'd go for 'incarcerated terrorist' myself but yeah, soldier is very much the term his supporters would use. I've heard it's great from multiple sources so will probably check it out one of these days.

Ireland was occupied by the English.

This dude was in the Irish Republican Army.

I think the preferred term is soldier, or freedom fighter.

Or was George Washington a terrorist as well?

ooh, history lesson!

REC2 happens directly after the first. It's about a spanish swat team who goes into the building after the events of the first movie and also follows a group of kids who snuck into the building right before the end of the first movie.

The chest bursting itself still holds up pretty well and disturbs me viscerally (regardless of all the times it has been referenced).  The little alien running away from the body immediately afterward is pretty funny, though.

Just proving a point that Lana Wachowski has always been a lazy piece of shit, he can't even take being a woman seriously and commit to it. I've seen better pre hormone traps in my day, he's just lazy.

Movie looks awesome I've never heard of the book so I might have to check it out. I love genre benders, or things that don't conform to the rules were used to. The visuals look fantastic and it looks like a departure from the norm. I'm concerned with the length of the movie someone says the rough cut is nearly 7 hours long.

I watched Dark Water (the original, not the western remake). I was enjoying it up until the final twenty minutes or so. I just don't like horror movies that
spoiler (click to show/hide)
actually involve supernatural stuff, like ghosts and such. I greatly prefer it when they try and provide a logical explanation for everything that's been happening. I thought this movie was heading in that direction, since the mother needed psychiatric help in the past, and she was under a lot of stress from the divorce and everything... But as it turns out, she was actually being haunted by a killer ghost LOL.
[close]

Meh. I wish they would make more horror movies like

A Tale of Two Sisters. Tell Me Something and Strange Circus were pretty good too.

Dark Water was enjoyable except for the very end for me as well. I enjoyed the psychology and suspense throughout the film, but the decision made at the very end just didn't make any sense to me.

There was no guarantee that sacrificing herself would save her child, and as a parent it seems impossible to think about leaving one's child behind, vulnerable in a world with this type of creature still existing in it. I guess it's possible she felt attending to the ghost as a new mother would be enough to satisfy it, but it just doesn't seem like a thing which can be satiated.

A movie I really liked has been added to Netflix streaming

http://movies.netflix.com/Movie/Absentia/70204765?country=1&rdirfdc=true

Added, thanks.

Watched this the other day. I really enjoyed it. The cast was mostly very normal looking people. My only complaint about the acting was the younger sister is not a very believable jogger. (She was kinda hot though.) The suspense and limited FX made the whole scenario surprisingly believable. Good ending, too.

I'd avoid The Raven if you have spartan free time. It's pretty shit, but the main girl has great jugs, and lol at the ammount of Brits trying and fail at merican accents. The doctor in particular is amazing.

Probably a 4, but I'll give it a 4.5.

Crazy Stone - This is a GREAT little film about 3 groups of people trying to get an expensive jade stone.  This is the first film from the director of Guns and Roses which I watched last week.  Unlike GnR, this is a tiny budgeted film shot on video with an all amateur cast and it's still quite good.  Worth a watch for sure.  He did a follow up called Crazy Racer which I have to see as well

Death Becomes Her - Really loved it.  Hadn't seen it since it was in theaters, so i was surprised with how much I remembered from then, but this is a fun little screw ball comedy with Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep chewing up the scenery like nobody's business.  Was great to see Bruce Willis in a comedy.

So much of this trailer didn't make it into the film itself so I'm really curious about the cut scenes

Crazy Racer is fugging great.  Its like the Chinese equivalent of a Guy Ritchie comedy, only better then he's made them since Snatch or so.

oddly enough I've got Crazy Stone (on DVD) sitting on my living room table right now and was planning to watch this weekend.

yes. it's so devoid of any style or originality. every scene is just the most basic boilerplate answer to the question of "how do we do this scene?"

I'm not gonna say Underworlds is a classic series or anything but the first two at least had a style to them and the action was fun. Underworld 2 is my favorite. It's so hard hitting and brutal in it's action sequences. The 3rd just feels fake with ultra clean and sharp image quality that doesnt match the tone. it's terribad.

I re-watched Batman Begins and TDK today. BB is about as good as I remembered. TDK favored better on this viewing mostly because I hadn't seen it in a while. I still feel the last act of the movie is much weaker than everything before it.
