It's nice that a movie other than Kane topped the list. We should celebrate diversity and pour one out for the HEGEMONIC STATUS QUO.

No joke I'm kinda delighted that Tokyo Story is #1 on the directors' list.

8. Man With A Movie Camera - this is still one of the most OMG things ever made

edit abort, there's no sound on that link, so sorry, silent movies should always go with a merry gay tune.

I have no idea how anyone can take that genre seriously. Blackwitch had some interesting parts and a solid ending, but this shit is embarrassing

The first PA was legitimately scary at points. PA2 went over the top and was a retread all at the same time, but PA3 brought things back to being slightly scary and worth it. Dat fan camera.

Honestly the "story" wrapped up fine with PA3, we've now officially entered  milkage territory.

I absolutely love found footage films though -- Blair Witch is my favorite horror movie, and I give even mediocre movies a pass if they're the same genre.

Now it's being used an excuse to hire no-name actors, drop the budget to pocket change and a box of Cheez-Its, and not bother with pointless things like framing, cinematography, plot, and actually making a good movie that people want to see.

That's exactly why I like them. Horror movies shouldn't feel overproduced at all, barring some exceptions. The grittier and more realistic, the better. (And it's impossible to be realistic without no-names, I feel.)

Found footage has basically become on par with jump scares in the horror genre: effective with the right director, but often used to disguise the lack of anything worthwhile. Except that found footage takes up the entire movie.

My parents met at a screening of Vertigo.

You know, any time I've read the source material for a Hitchcock movie, it's nowhere near as good as the movie.  Rear Window, for example, is a super cheesy short story where Grace Kelly's character is a loyal black sidekick.  Makes you wonder why they bothered adapting the things instead of coming up with original material, but you can't argue with the results.

Blair Witch was pretty cool because nobody had done anything like it before. Dragging this across 2 pages, but no, Blair Witch really wasn't the first "Found footage" movie.

And the movie that directly drove Blair Witch to happen.

That's interesting.  I once saw a remake of Rear Window on TV with Christopher Reeves (post-accident) and he had a loyal black (Jamaican) sidekick.  There's still a blond woman who visits but the roles don't fit with the original film.  And it's a then-modern adaptation, so there's stuff about internet cheating and using cameras to spy.

I like Blair Witch more because of its ending. Other than the endings, both movies are about on the same level I think... although I still might give it more to BW. The setting and circumstances were more engrossing than "here's some dude interviewing some other dudes with old footage spliced in."

Poughkeepsie Tapes were effing crazy though. Like Saw, done right.

I just re-watched Total Recall, a Blu-Ray remaster came out today. It's the earliest theater experience I can remember. Mars atmosphere and its effects on Arnold scarred me for life.

Fuck Colin Farrell.

There's some stuff in Total Recall which doesn't hold up real well, but it's pretty solid in general. The effects of Mars' atmosphere on Arnold are some of the things which aren't super impressive.

But, yeah, fuck Colin Farrell and fuck the remake. What is the damned point?

they should have just given the remaster of the original a theatrical release, makes more fiscal (and common) sense.

I would gladly pay full admission to hear this on a Dolby 7.1 cinema system:

Yeah there's some animal violence in Holocaust, but if you could stomach that and have a taste for old school Italian horror then it's kind of worth the watch. Despite its very shallow characters (typical of most old Italian horrors) its one of the few films that can really get under my skin. I guess it's the whole rawness of how everything is shot.

And it has such a lovely theme song:

Also I second Man Bites Dog as well worth watching if you're wanting more "found footage" films.

pretty good movie. i'm not sure if i'm the only one but i got the feeling the movie implied:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
that the brother and sister were having a relationship. there's a part where you see some of his footage of her and it has a very creepy tone to it and there's one clip of him in her room and she freaks out when she looks at him and tells him to leave.

so Len Wiseman creates and launches the Underworld franchise, which isn't exactly quality but is still somehow successful enough to make it to four entries.  Directs Die Hard 5 and has a sizable hit, takes all this accrued goodwill from the studio bosses he's made from his utterly mediocre but successful career and uses all that pull to make...

a 90% similar remake to a very good Schwarzenegger blockbuster.

Len Wiseman must be the most unoriginal man on earth.

oh, and in the news of non-shitty, underbudgeted Sci-Fi, Lockout is actually kinda good.  Shame it bombed so badly, Guy Pearce makes a decent action hero.  The movie is dumb as hell, but like any good B-movie, it's got a scruffy enthusiasm in spades that makes up for the rough parts.

You can tell when those scenes are coming up, more or less.  You'll definitely know when that scene you've heard about is coming up.  But the audio is just as bad, so covering your eyes might not help that much.  There's only one time in the movie (very late into it) where it's a surprise.
