Tim Miller is off of Deadpool 2.

Well, shit. That's deeply unfortunate. 'Creative differences' are cited, but Deadpool is pretty much the best recent example of a lead actor and director working in sync. I'll bet Fox is screwing the pooch on this.

Apparently they aren't with FOX:
Quote
After a series of creative differences between Deadpool director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds, Miller has exited Deadpool 2. He hadn’t formally signed a deal to continue, but he was developing the script and by all accounts had planned to return behind the camera for a film Fox will release in 2018.

I’ve confirmed from studio insiders this exit was over mutual creative differences, but this all ended amicably and the studio is very high on Miller and the expectation is the filmmaker will jump right into another big Fox project: Influx, an adaptation of the Daniel Suarez novel that has a Mark Bomback script and is expected to launch a film trilogy.

I've tried to sit through Age of Ultron a few times.  I've only ever made it like 45-50 minutes before I find that I completely zoned out and I end up surfing the net on my phone or something.  I really enjoyed Avengers 1 too.
It's okay, like practically all the good parts are in those 45 minutes anyway.

The quality of a superhero movie is directly proportional to how much of Ryan Reynold's face you see on average. [See: Green Lantern and Deadpool]

That's a very small sample for testing, but the theory holds up.

Bad Moms: Was an OK comedy.  Mila Kunis as a mom of 11 year old kids was just not very believable...she looks and acts way too young.  Had some laughs, but this is one of those movies you watch and then quickly forget about.

Tango & Cash: Had never seen this before.  An incredible slice of 80s cheese- I see that Jon Peters had his hand in this movie and it shows.  Read that before he was involved, it was supposed to be much more serious.  Instead what we got was a like a live-action cartoon, in particular the scenes with Jack Palance acting like the stereotypical evil Mr. Big type character and making monologues saying he'd get Tango and/or Cash next time, while watching them on video screens.  :lol   I kept thinking that Kurt Russell was trying too hard to be Patrick Swayze in this movie and surprise!  Swayze was originally supposed to play his part.

Tango & Cash is decent, yeah, good casting (Brion James, Geoffrey Lewis, James Hong...). The whole prison escape with Z'dar is OK too and the whole incongruity of Stallone playing the preppy cop. You could do a lot worse looking for a 80-90 buddy movie.

Serious question here, not trying to be an edgelord.

What is so good about Deadpool? I thought there was some decent humor in it, like him taking the Haunted Boat Tour flyer... but otherwise, shooting people in the ass just loses its value very quickly.

Mind you, I never really liked Deadpool as a character.

It felt fresh, and the fourth wall breaking was new to the superhero genre. It wasn't about saving the world, it was about saving his girlfriend and getting revenge. The jokes were hit and miss but they hit more often than not for me (and others, I assume.) And the action was pretty well directed (plus the R-rated gore helped differentiate it.)

Overall, just a nice lean comic book movie, which is what the world wanted after Avengers 2, BvS, Suicide Squad, Civil War, etc.

Logan looks to be in the same mold, just a stripped down story that happens to have comic book characters in it. Fox killing it with their X-verse (Apocalypse was good.)

Yeah it'll be interesting to see where it goes. They already confirmed Cable and already my "IT'S GONNA BE ABOUT SAVING THE WORLD/FUTURE" alarm is ringing.

I'm sure it'll be more watchable than DC's continued output, though. :fbm

It also nailed the character down perfectly.  Ryan Reynolds did an amazing job of bringing him to life on-screen.

The Wolverine was not very good, and it sucks because the story it was based on was perfect for a movie adaption, but they still fucked it up- it's from the original Wolverine limited series and was just about Logan in Japan romancing Mariko and fighting against her yakuza father.  No superhero bullshit.  No dumb losing the healing factor shit or mecha samurai crap.  Why the hell did they deviate from the formula so much?  :-\

I hope Logan is a good movie but I don't have the highest of hopes for it.  I assume the girl is X-23 and I guess will take over his role since this is supposed to be Jackman's last film.  Kind of surprised they didn't base it on Old Man Logan but maybe it is and I'm not seeing it from the trailer?

Looks like it's loosely based on Old Man Logan, or at least some of the elements of that comic. Not a straight adaptation, though.

There's not much they can take from Old Man Logan without the MCU and there's not much I'd want them to.

Hulk's mentally challenged incest grandchildren :derp

Mark Millar :yuck

Logan, like Civil War before it, looks to be a vast improvement on the source material.

Easy enough to switch out those MCU characters for others.  Which I guess probably is what they've done...with X-23 lumped in for...reasons?

The Wolverine >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Apocalypse

🤔

I loved The Wolverine to bits but I'm unsure here. Apocalypse was schlocky sure but there was a competent story there and lots of fanservice, and suffers mostly because of the "end of the world" plot getting abused so much. The Wolverine was great until it's ridiculously stupid ending. For me they're about equal.

Of course, my love of Apocalypse's Quicksilver scene and Nightcrawler might be blinding me.

The Wolverine is a good movie with a shitty third act. It's the movie most hurt by having to be a summer blockbuster. If it had just stayed a kind of pulpy and grounded story about a dude getting involved with a major Japanese family and the Yakuza it could have been great. But no he has to fight a Gundam. it's like the movie had no idea where to go.

That's why I'm excited about Logan, because it seems like they are being allowed to make what they want and be as serious and pulpy as possible without having to be a summer blockbuster.

I liked Apocalypse. It was a silly and sholoky movie for sure.  But for once I feel like the X-men actually acted like a team and that goes a long way for me.

The Girl on the Train - Meh. Blunt's great in this tho.

Deliverance is still a stone cold classic. Gosh dang, whatta movie. This film also has the best 'playing dead' performances I've ever seen, that's the kind of thing you tend to notice on a rewatch.

For how much longer will Park Chan-Wook be best known internationally as the director of Oldboy? I mean, I like it a lot, its great and all, but many of his other films are considerably less grueling and audience friendly. I could see The Handmaiden being a relatively big arthouse hit, for example. Its got great commercial elements like clever and intricate plotting, and also, lots of graphic lesbian sex. Like, if, in The Sting, Robert Redford and Paul Newman just started going at it, hard, midway through. So its got that going for it. I bring up The Sting because this is also a con artist movie, with characters working on an overarching deception after a big payday, and of course, that's all fun to watch. But like the Victorian set novel its clearly taking inspiration from, the trappings that adorn the story count for a lot, and here Park gets to do his gothic tinged thing, and do it well. I had a lot of fun with this movie. Not one I'd recommend to even the slightly prudish though.

Watched Raging Bull, that I saw a long time ago (probably at not the best age to appreciate it). Thought it felt a bit flat in the end with not too much going on beyond being the story of a sad fuck ? The character is pretty distant and while it does a good job portraiting him, we never really go that deep either. However, it is beautifully shot, amazing all around in aesthetics. The montage with the fights intersped with the 8mm color footage works terrific. Well worth a viewing just on that account.

Restoration could have been better. Lots of dust and shit, found the grain texture suspect at times (especially the opening shot, some frozen grain effect perhaps, though with streaming you never know).

I've posted before here that The Da Vinci Code is one of the best unintentional comedies of our era. It is a Plan 9 from Outer Space level travesty, a crime committed against the better sense of any viewer.

Ron Howard is a fantastic director, but I assume Dan Brown is incapable of writing anything remotely coherent, so in film form there is only so far one can polish a turd.

Tend to agree with chronovore, they're genius (unintentional ?) comedies. VAGINA TRIANGLES in the Last Supper ? Daughter of Jesus ? Anti matter bomb from the particle collider ? Prospective pope being elected for parachuting ? The schlock is incredible.

When I was back in the USA looking after my mother, she and I would watch whatever she had on hand. She was stunned at how much I was laughing during Da Vinci Code, and she was a little confused as to whether or not the film was intended as comedy. When I started pointing out why I was laughing, she was less "laughing along" and more mildly peeved that the movie wasn't doing what it had set out to do.

It's even more fun when you realize that most of this is lifted, whole cloth (shroud pun intended) from Holy Blood, Holy Grail, and that the most interesting elements of it come from another author who is a fake scholar.

Doctor Strange...

The reviews are shockingly high for this one. Honestly I came away from it thinking it was pretty average. It's the most stock, barebones origin story I've seen from a Marvel movie thus far. They barely give DS any character development and I'm not exactly sure what we were supposed to take away it. It doesn't really seem to have anything to say.

The movies biggest failing is trying to redo the Tony Stark story with a much less compelling character/actor. Benedict Cumberbatch is super boring. Dude's got zero charisma in this movie. If you're going to tell a story about an arrogant rich white guy who finds out he's actually way more awesome than he originally thought, he's got to at least carry that through out the movie. BC doesn't have it. He quips nonstop, way more than I recall any other Marvel movie hero and they're all really bad.

To make matters worse, you pair him against a villain who is infinitely more charismatic in Mads Mikkelsen. There's a scene where Mads is immobile and using only his facial expressions delivers a better and more convincing character moment than anything BC does in the entire movie. Honestly the whole film just made me sad they didn't just cast Mads as Doctor Strange.

I feel like this movie was just rushed out the gate so they can have Doctor Strange on hand to show up in other stuff. Except they did the reverse for Black Panther so I dunno. The only interesting part of the movie was the finale and the method Doctor Strange uses to win. Other than that I give this movie 2 shrugs.
